What Federer has achieved in just one tournament

Lol!!

Haha ! Now we can look back and laugh. but we are a tough lot. And we do keep our minds off these things with the ji**ing thing.:)

actually I have once looked back at the haas thread and the del potro thread and laughed at how nervous and anxious we were. I must have said "I'm going to die of a heart attack" atleast 10 times in each thread. In my defense both were intense matches and at that point the french was like a do or die thing for me.

Right, though I don't see him winning another FO this year. Last year it was nearly mission impossible even without Nadal in the picture. If Fed will lose early in a slam this year, it'll probably be the FO.

You have a history of doubting Fed's abilities. What makes you doubt that he'll reach the finals in Paris? Meeting Nadal in the quarters? That's even better than meeting him in the finals. He'll just handle him the way he did in Madrid.

I don't doubt Fed abilities, however like it or not he did decline and isn't in his peak anymore despite great performence in Australia. Federer almost lost in the last RG without Nadal. Saying he will handle Nadal like he did in Madrid is easier said than done - the RG surface is very different from Madrid, one that suits Nadal way more than Madrid does. This is also a best of 5, and which Nadal owns Federer in.

If Fed and Nadal are to meet in RG, I would think Nadal was the clear favorite in that matchup. I'm sure most Fed fans will feel the same.

I don't believe he is in decline any longer. If anything he has improved. If he was in fact playing in a "weak era" a few years ago then he is playing better.

His "decline" was a a temporary affair brought on by pressure of the Sampras record coupled with illness.
(to any doubters, you don't lose six pounds in the week leading up to a Slam because you are well)

I predicted he'd win the French last year the day after the Madrid final and I am predicting he'll win it again this year, with or without Nadal. :)

I duuno, 23 semis in a row screams consistency more than anything else.

No, 18 out of 19 finals involves winning 1 more match in each of those slams, theoretically the 2nd toughest match to win at that.

And as april says, a confirmed serious illness during this period that had it's main effect at the AO may well have been the reason for the streak even breaking.

It's clearly a matter of opinion. I rate making a slam final significantly harder than a semi, and far far more important, as it then gives you a theoretical 50% chance to win the whole thing.

I agree on most of this, but the deciding factor will - alas - be Nadal's health. He was beatable at RG in 2009, and hasn't won any match since then against a Top 8 player - which is pretty awful for a player with his status. With Davydenko, Del Potro, Djokovic and perhaps even a handful of still 'flying-under-the-radar' other players around, it might not be unthinkable that neither Feds nor Nadal even make it to the RG final this year.

But then I'm a very cautious tennis fan who never takes any 'obvious' expected final appearance of a top player for granted. I hope they will both be able to surprise me in a positive way! ;)

Don't forget Nadal hasn't played a top player on clay since Madrid. I'm sure Nadal will still win most of his matches on clay. Nadal is a different beast on clay just like Federer is a different beast at slams.

is it possible that fed could beat nadal at the FO without him being injured, but just nadal has an off day? So in the case that if he ever does, which i realize that there one in a million chance of happening, there won't be the whole he only won against rafa because he was injured. Sorry I still in my heart of hearts want roger to beat rafa at the FO the way rafa did roger at wimbly.
