What is your Serve Percentages

How is your serve percentages? First serve and 2nd serve?

I am desperately trying to improve my serve percentages because I need to play matches soon. And I found myself giving many points by double-faults. :(

For me, due to the low success rate on serve, I am only focusing on getting the ball in.
After more than 2000 balls of practice in the past week, I improve from ~6 in out of every 10 balls to ~8. But still under match conditions, I will probably be giving out points here and there.

What are you guys' serve percentages?

When you say 8 out of 10, do you mean first serves, second serves, or just that you don't double fault 8 out of 10 times?

I'm not really sure of my percentages. I would guess my 1st (which I'm desperately trying to get to be more consistent) on a good day is around 50% now that i've improved it. Bad day, more like 20%.

Second serve is probably 90% on good days 80-85% on bad days. It's a real, high kicking topspin serve though, so I'll take some double faults rather than just having a dinker that I can get over every time.

First serve = 6 or 7 out of 10. Could be higher when I'm pumped.
Second = 8 or 9 but this thing is meaningless cuz it's so weak. I DF about 1 or twice in a whole set.

First flats, full speed, 30%.
First topspins, either with slice or twist, 70%.
Second serves, topped, top/sliced, twists, 99%.
Can go at the body, wide right, wide left at will.

LeeD, have you ever uploaded videos of your serve? I'd like to see if I could pick up some things from your serve. Sometimes I feel like it's easier to learn about technique and strategy from watching someone who isn't at the pro level. It's easier to see what their methods are or something.

I looked at StanSmith most early years.
When PetrKorda came into the scene, it cemented my motion.
I'm homeless, drive a '79 Van, make less than $4k a year, haven't had a camera since '62, don't have a computer, and borrowing a cell phone on someone else's plan.

Haha you don't have a computer, but you've managed over 6000 posts on TW?

First flat serve: probly 50-60% on good days, 30-45% on bad

First slice up middle at opp.: 75-85% on good days, 70-80 on bad (but then again, I rarely use this one, as it is more easily returned and flat serve is almost always an ace at my level)

First slice out wide: 25% on good days. I always hit the white part of the net >.<

Second flat (I just feel really lucky sometimes, others I feel really angry, and just want to slam the ball): feeling lucky is 100% (only did it twice, but still...), angry: 20%, too unfocused

Second topspin: 30%-50% on bad days, mostly cause I can't aim this one, and almost always am hitting towards risky angles.

I need to improve my serve more, get more patient. I rarely retoss, almost always just hit whatever the toss may be. >.<

I don't hit a flat serve. I use a slice serve almost exclusively on my first, and usually hit 75% of them in. Standard kick serve on 2nd that's around 90%.

+1.

I'm a doubles specialist, so don't usually go for flat firsts unless I use that for variety and to keep the returner behind the baseline.

I can place both firsts and seconds pretty much anywhere at will - and place seconds regularly with 6" of the lines.

I find the biggest contributors to my serve percentage is how much sleep I get the night before, and the amount of light.

If I get not enough sleep, I can't serve to save my life. If it is dusky outside, or there is glare, or in a poorly lit indoor place, it is absolute disaster for me. Well rested with a decent backdrop and I am fine.

It seems with the sub optimal light I loose my depth perception and can't tell how far away from me the ball is. So I try to only serve in broad daylight, and only play indoors at places with bright lights (Direct lighting is best).

The lighting doesn't bother my groundstrokes as much, but it is hell on my serve.

Few months ago you said you would borrow one from a friend and have them upload it though. I too am interested in seeing your serve.

This is from about a year ago. http://vimeo.com/4678697

Over the winter I changed my motion to take strain off my back and make my delivery more repeatable with the added bonus of being able to serve two days in a row.

I need to get some footage of the new but very similar looking motion.

I am putting a bit more hurt on the ball now too, especially the flat ball, so pretty eager to see what it looks like now that I have it more grooved.

Ona good day, I can hit a killer kicking first serve at about 60-65%. I do double fault maybe 2-3 times a set, but with the amount of points I end with my serves, It's totally worth it.

Not really given this too much thought, but I'd suggest 1st serve 50%, 2nd serve 75% so 1 in 8 of my service points is a DF.
