What's the beef between Federer & Murray?

I never knew this coldness between Roger & Andy existed. I recently came to know about this.
It certainly seems like they get along well now, and no hard feelings.

This link has the Top 10 Verbal digs that "saint" Federer has taken at Murray, in the past. What's the reason behind all this tension between them?

Also, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/te...Andy-Murray-ahead-ATP-Tour-finals-London.html

I'm writing a couple of them here :

>Federer had some harsh words for Murray’s recent success in the 2011 Asian swing.
“I’m not taking anything away from what he did but was Asia the strongest this year?” he said. “I’m not sure. Novak wasn’t there, I wasn’t there and Rafa lost early. But it has been a good effort by him after losing to Kevin Anderson in Montreal.”

> Federer pulled no punches after losing to Murray in the first round of Dubai in 2008.

“He’s going to have to grind very hard for the next few years if he keeps playing this way. He tends to wait a lot for the mistake of the opponent,” said Federer. “He stands way far behind on the court and that means you’ve got to do a lot of running. I gave him the mistakes today but I think overall, over a 15-year career, you want to look to win a point more often than for an opponent to miss. That’s what served me well over the years but who knows, he might surprise us all and do it for 20 years.”

> Federer, ranked No. 2 at the time, had some chilly comments for Murray when he reached a career-high World No. 3 in 2009.

“It’s nice but is there a big difference between being No. 3 and No. 4 in the world? I don’t think so,” Federer told the BBC. “It’s about being No. 1 or No. 2, being the top seed, being the top dog. That’s what it’s about for Andy. I won the U.S. Open and Rafa won the Australian Open. Murray unfortunately didn’t win [the World Tour Finals] …Djokovic did. He didn’t win the big ones but he was very solid in the Masters series.” :-?

This post in not for igniting any hate comments against Fed or Murray.
Rather, If someone knows the reasons behind their animosity, i would like to know.

None of those are really hostile quotes, but I do think it reveals that Federer has some small disdain for Murray's game. Roger is/was just a little irritated by the fact that a much worse player like Murray has historically given him some trouble so he took a few digs at him. No big deal..

This is a bit biased. How about hundreds of times Fed was praising Murray?

Also swiss people have those kind of strange humor and are not diplomatic, come across *** arrogant, but they are not.

I'm not saying Fed is perfect. He gets mad or irritated sometimes vs any player, not just Murray.

But overall Fed was always complementary to Murray. It's not like Murray didn't say stuff about Fed either.

He talks about Andy's defensive game. But the same defensive game, has helped Nadal dominate Roger. So why doesn't he say the same about Rafa?

Federer said Murray was one of the most talented players of all time after he lost to him Dubai 2008. There is no animosity between the two. Federer "Credit to him for getting in the lead. He did an unbelievable job".- after losing to him in the Olympics

Nadal isn't as defensive as Murray, for the most part. He has a big forehand that causes errors from Federer's backhand. When Federer loses Murray, he probably just feels he had a bad day (apart from this years AO where Murray played great) and missed too many random balls. Nadal makes Federer miss (in Roger's mind), Murray just pushes the ball back. Nadal and Federer have been at the top of the game for so long that I think Roger had no choice but to respect him. I think he genuinely likes Rafa personally too, but doesn't really feel the same for Murray and Djokovic. There's also a little bit of PR involved.

Because Rafa has an incredible forehand that he hits lots of winners with? I think in general Roger has a huge amount of respect for Rafa too.

I think Roger has now, in the past 2-3 years started to accept Murray as a BIG player & acknowledged his talent.

Before that, he used to throw trash cans at Andy.

None of them are extremely hostile like President said. Federer's not perfect, but stop trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. It's ok if you started this thread because you don't like Federer. That's ok. We get it. Most of these if not all of them are pretty old. Just let bygones be bygones. People like Federer and Murray do it all the time.

They definitely don't "hate" each other but they probably do have the tensest relationship among the Big 4. Federer has made several comments over the years about Djokovic that are much worse than anything he's said to Murray. They are probably fine right now in the present, I haven't heard of any beef between them since 2012.

Except for the time when Fed got annoyed with Nole's parents with REASON, there never has been a beef. Granted he was annoyed that Djokovic hit that forehand on MP! but they never hated each other. They actually are good to each other off court.

They get on fine, those quotes look worse written down. Andy after the Wimbledon final 2012, ''it really helped having Roger there''

I think Roger doesn't like his defensive game and the fact it gives him trouble.

Re Djokovic, that all started whenever Djokovic called for the trainer in a Davis Cup tie against Stan. The perception was that Nole was faking and Roger was pi**ed off.

Also Djokovic quitting a lot annoyed Fed however after the 2011 revelations of Nole's gluten allergy we now all understand that he was not just giving up.

Look at Federer's comments after Davis Cup 2006, several comments through 2008-2009 about Djokovic's injuries and retirements, and of course the USO 2011 comments. Nothing huge, of course but there was definitely some slight tension between them.

Roger is what is known as a poor loser. Like most great competitors, he hates to lose and sometimes that negative energy transfers into how he feels about the guy's who have beaten him multiple times.

It's very rare in any area of life to be as successful as Federer and be a "good sport". Besides that Murray is the greatest most annoying player of all time and he actually challenged prime Fed. I can understand why Roger dislikes Murray, as for Nadal, Djokovic and Berdych I think they deserve more respect from him.

I agree with the first paragraph. Very good point. I agree that Djokovic deserves a little more respect than he has been given especially in the past, same about Berdych, but I don't think Fed has ever really disliked Nadal like it seems he does/did to Djokovic and Berdych.

He doesn't much keep what he thinks to himself, that's for sure.

I think his comments about Murray show some degree of disdain for his game, while the comments about Novak show a more personal dislike. He's had some unfriendly comments about Rafa too, but Rafa doesn't seem to have resented them, except maybe a couple times.

Btw, given that Fed has made comments about Murray's competition then, and about Rafa's competition around mid this year, I think we have every right to comment of his competition as well.

I agree with the first paragraph. Very good point. I agree that Djokovic deserves a little more respect than he has been given especially in the past, same about Berdych, but I don't think Fed has ever really disliked Nadal like it seems he does/did to Djokovic and Berdych.

But what makes people think he dislikes Berdych?. There's only his comments about being injured at Wimbledon in 2010 that got Berdie annoyed, but has there been anything else?.

Nadal is sponsored by Nike. They are expected to say nice things about each other, and the very act of spending time together doing promo stuff makes it less likely that resentment builds up.

I think it comes down to resentment of pushers, something that most of us can relate to. Murray's gotten more aggressive over the past two years, but he's essentially a fantastic pro-level pusher. They drive attacking players nuts. :)

All these guys are very confident and there's gamesmanship not just on the court but off the court with press conferences, etc. It comes with the territory they occupy. A lot of what Roger Federer said was right after tough matches or maybe in the "heat of battle". Many top players over the years have found ways to let it be known that look, I'm still at the top of the mountain and I'll show you on the court kind of stuff. I think that it's spot on that Federer's respect for Murray evolved over the years. He recognized Murray's talent early and as a tennis nut, some of what he said was actually helpful career advice as well. It all helped make Murray a much tougher, better player I guarantee. I think that Murray would say that Roger has made him a better player.

There's a few things to understand here. First off, Federer has never been a gracious loser. He's an extremely competitive guy, and HATES to lose. It's not a bad thing, Nadal is the same way. It's just how they are. Why is this important? Because Murray leads the H2H against Federer. The only major player besides Nadal to do so. So it's not surprising at all that Fed's made some snarky comments here or there. He just doesn't deal with losing very well.

Also, if you notice, Federer has never made any comments about Andy as a person, only about his game. And he has never said anything outrightly negative, only critiquing him from the position of a rival. There's nothing wrong with that. I believe Federer respects Andy hugely as a person. This is in contrast to someone like Djokovic, as Federer and others have definitely made jabs at him personally before (most if not all of these have been when Djokovic was a lot younger, though).

Eh this sport could use some hostility between players, especially between the top guys. Not anything excessive like blatant hatred, but it'd be nice to see players not kiss each other's asses.

Yeah, I mentioned excessive hostility is a negative. But what I meant by "hostility" is really minor. Just maybe a bit of trash talk here and there, maybe less complimenting and politeness. They're competitors and we've all seen them have their outbursts. We know that competitive fire's in them, it'd just be cool to see a little bit of it off the court.

Didn't Federer text Murray to congratulate him after winning Wimbledon? I kind of doubt he would do the same for Djokovic.

I also kind of wonder if Federer's comments on different guys kind of depends on his agenda as far as blocking Nadal from the record, or whatever. With Murray, I wonder if he was annoyed that he was so friendly with Nadal, rather than trying to beat him like he was clearly capable of based on 2008 US Open/2010 Australian Open. With Del Potro, he took the opposite verbal approach in saying he would've gotten to #1 in the world if he had stayed healthy. Maybe he believes the way to motivate Murray is to diss him in the paper, and the way to do it with Del Potro is to let him know how good he is.

I know that makes Federer sound more like a coach than a tennis player, but his comments can be peculiar. Sometimes he seems to have no filter whatsoever and says whatever the hell he wants, diplomacy be damned...and sometimes he's extremely cautious and politically correct.

Some trash talking can be entertaining I won't deny it, but I definitely think it's better if it doesn't get to that and any hostility, competitive fire is channeled to the actual tennis matches.

Lol...it's hardly rocket science is it to figure out why Federer might have some beef with Andy M? :)

It somewhat resembles that of many of his fans on here and it is rooted very firmly in the H2H. It can be summed up thus: 'How dare a player with a game so inferior to mine keep beating me more times than I beat him? Nobody else apart from Rafa has been able to do this, not even Novak! As he is clearly an inferior player, all those wins over me can only be flukes because I wasn't playing well for some reason. As the H2H is clearly a strange anomaly and must be down to lucky flukes, it cannot be treated as of any importance and Murray cannot possibly be considered on the same level as me. After all, he's only won 2 Slams and I've won 17!' Etcetera, etcetera.

I submit that if Federer had maintained a consistently positive H2H against Murray, as he does against every other player on the tour apart from Rafa, (who is a special case) we would never have heard any negative comments about Murray whatsoever and we would not see the dismissive animosity towards him shown by so many of his fans on here and elsewhere. But that's not the case and so he is clearly rattled from time to time and he has only slowly and grudgingly come to respect Murray as a player whose game might just give him genuine problems rather than be down to all these odd flukes!

I think there is now mutual respect between them compared to earlier. Murray always respected Federer of course but was probably a little needled by the early sniping he got from Fed which is probably why he once boasted at the 2008 WTF that he was going to beat him which he then proceeded to do after a lengthy 3 set match, even though it was a dead rubber!

Still, I don't sense there is any great personal affection between them, even now. Murray's friendships are with Nadal and, to a lesser extent, with Djokovic. In fact I've always wondered if Federer ever bothered to congratulate Murray after he won his first Slam at the US Open last year and then won Wimbledon this year. Nadal certainly did!
