What's your unsalty criticism of Nadal's statue?

It’s ok. They could have waited until he’d been retired a few years. He gets recognition now with the trophies and the million dollars in prize money and media acclaim. Might have been nice for him in his 50s to have it unveiled and a nice ceremony. Plus they could have spent longer on the design which looks like it belongs on a manga theme park.

Another aspect of giving some time is to let a person live a certain amount of time without controversy before attaching a long-lived brand so closely to their character/views/other baggage.

Some things go on easy but are harder to take off if need be

Not saying Nadal is a bad guy, but there is a very good example already in our sport. (agree or disagree with Margaret Court's right to her views, it's definitely a headache for the AO now)

I've always like the fact that RG has a tangible artistic connection. Makes sense. Paris is, after all an historically important artistic city. I love that they do a poster every year and they're always . . . unique. Okay, sometimes they suck like this year's. But they aren't afraid to go out on a limb artistically, and I guess Nadal's statue is another example of that.

You should see what RG did with the statue of the RG himself: it is a travesty in the similar vein. It just doesn't do the tournament justice. They could hope that it will follow the fate of the Eiffel Tower, and the Georges Pompidou centre ... but I doubt it.

it's not so horrible, over time i think we'll get used to it. BUT thematically, i just think it would have been cooler to do 'young rafa', tank top, clamdiggers, long hair..."the boy that would become the legend" would have been imo a better choice.

I don't care about statues, so I don't mind either way.
But they made his chin too long.
When you have your mouth open like that your chin becomes compressed......but they forgot to compress it.
And if you look at photos of him playing a similar shot, Nadal's arm always ends up in front of his chin........so because they couldn't see his chin, they incorrectly made a chin that was from another photo where his mouth wasn't so wide open....
They would have been better off just putting his arm in front of his chin, as its supposed to be.

The statue is unsightly, it's a grotesque distortion of the human form.
A lot of modern art (as distinct from conceptual art) is some sort of comment on the form, i'm not keen on that idea, but this says absolutely nothing about the human condition, or about art itself.

The artist who was commissioned to build it is actually a fellow Spaniard and admirer of Nadal - Jordi Diez Fernandez - regarded as a top sculptor in Spain. Nadal loves the statue btw.

So the poor Frenchies did all they could to give their fav son what he'd like.

That's interesting.
Would the issues around Margaret Court be as problematic in France do you think?
The anglosphere seem beset by the culture wars in a way that i don't think all countries are, at least to the same extent.

Nah it's a problem across cultures.

In revolutions, why do people tear down statues first? It's an inanimate thing really. But they represent something, and project it - good or bad - a constant reminder as long as they stand.

Names on stadiums and plaques on statues become then more about an idea - "Here is someone who represented something we hold dear"

Until we are clear what that "something" is and that the person being venerated unambiguously represents it, it may be premature to make them icons.

That's why mere athletic achievement is a bad reason for erecting statues or naming stadiums: they don't stand the test of time.

Something about them and their achievements has to transcend the sport and meet human condition in a hopeful way, as a polestar - guiding ideals and values.

That's why the US open has Arthur Ashe stadium, not Bill Tilden stadium

(BJK is a whole diff discussion for another day)

Set aside Court's views and even then she is not a great icon for much. Evonne Goolagong is a better icon. Aborigine, mother, who overcame adversity at a time when such things were reserved for the elite, to carve her name in tennis history

Roland Garros is named after a French aviator.
Obviously he means something to the French about achievement and excellence because the tennis connection if any is only secondary/marginal

I dont see anything wrong with it. Nadal dominated clay to a level no player will ever dominate anything in history past, present, future. Nadal will probably end up with double the amount of french titles that Fed/Sampras ended up with in Wimbledon titles or maybe Djoker gets into AO titles . thats insane.
