Which racquet for my play style—yonex ezone 98 or vcore 98

These racquets have been compared many times, and I have had a chance to try both of them, but the problem is that they are very similar with some minor differences so it’s hard to make a choice.

I play 4.5 ntrp, all court game with one handed backhand, and slice a lot. My kick and flat serves are my weapon, forehand and backhand are steady but I don’t hit super hard from the baseline, and they are more of a modern topspin stroke, not very flat, then I like finishing with a volley.

With the vcore, I felt like I could swing it really fast and my serve benefitted from that. I also liked how maneuverable it felt and I really enjoyed volleys with it. The frame itself had a nice look and feel to it.

With the ezone, I felt a little more in control of the ball, not too much less power, but it felt a little stiff when I tried it. I’m also not sure about the thick beam and thin throat on it, it just seems weird. Whereas the vcore is nice and thin and I like the throat shape better. I heard about the ezone tour that came out recently, but it sounds too head heavy, as I like head light racquets for my game.

There are plus versions of each of these racquets, which I know will help my serve, but I worry that the rest of my game will suffer. Is it worth just having one really good shot-serve- and the rest worse, or having every shot be pretty good? I’ve hit with the ezone 98 plus but it just feels too long and unwieldy, I don’t know if I will get used to it.

I’ve been using the pro staff 97 for about 2 months and, while I love the feel of it and I always rally well with it, I just think it doesn’t have enough power for my game when I’m playing matches and not just practice. It doesn’t help my serve enough and it requires me to hit out on every shot, but sometimes, especially in matches, I don’t hit every shot as hard as I can.

Lastly, I am worried that a new vcore is coming sometime soon, so would it still be worth it to buy the vcore now even if the new one is coming soon? Is it 2-4 months away, or still longer?

Thanks for reading and for any advice you have.

I think the Ezone 98 Tour begs for a leather grip, based on most people doing that to their Ezone 98 Tours.

Vcore or Ezone?

Serving is half the game in tennis, if I were you I would go Vcore. Sounds like you prefer the Vcore anyway.

I would try to demo the extended length frame and see how you go with it.

Sounds like you are a little more fond of the vcore, and reading that I also think that the vcore would be better for you.

I agree... sounds like you're leaning towards the VCore 98 which if you like spin should fit your game better. Also, if you like the spin and power better on the VCore it's easy to get more control by changing your strings or tension. You need to ultimately choose the racquet that give you the most confidence on court and fits your style of play.

Second the comments above. Seems you like the vcore better and could easily add some control with a low powered control oriented poly like silverstring, rs lyon, yptp or max power!

How do you find the comfort and feeling of the vcore compared to the ezone? Thanks

Most people say the ezone has better feel/comfort, but I found it a little stiff, it could be because it has a thicker beam (24mm) where the vcore has 22mm beam. But the ezone has a thinner throat section than the vcore to enhance the feel, but I just found the difference in beans width too much and made it feel too weird and flex weirdly. The vcore is closer to a straight beam and feels more solid to me.

Very interesting thank you.

Anyone knows if the pure aero from babolat feels more stiff and is likely to give more arm pain than vcore? Thanks

Have you tried the VCore 95?

I have not tried it, but I heard it’s very low powered, even less than the vcore pro 97. I was looking for something less demanding and easier to use, so that one didn’t sound right, although it looks like a sweet racquet. How do you like it, and compared to vcore 98?

I’ve been using the VCORE 98+ for 1 1/2 years, and demoed the new Ezone 98 + a few months ago. Like you I’m a 4.5, but predominantly a baseliner in singles, although I’m pure serve & volley in doubles (both serves).

The VCORE definitely has more power & spin, although it is also noticeably firmer throughout. The + is a tank, but extremely solid at net. Like many frames, it rewards good technique, but get sloppy (as I have a tendency to do), and you will struggle.

The 2020/2021 is rumored to be coming out soon, but I may just load up on the 2018s and call it a day. Shame they didn’t make the Galaxy Black in a +.

I tried the ezone 98 plus but I really did not like the feel of it, it just felt unwieldy and overly-flexy. Is the vcore 98 plus better in that regard? If you have tried the vcore 98 standard, is there a big difference between the two, and why did you choose the plus over standard? I feel like the plus would really help make my serve into a huge weapon, but if my serve happens to be off, the rest of my game will be off too. How long did it take to get used to extended length for you?
Would it be a good idea to get some standard length vcores, and one extended length to have just in case you want to serve big, or should you just stick to the same racquet exactly?

As for the 2020/2021 vcore, do you think it’ll be much different, or basically the same frame with the newer vdm technology?

I’ve used extended length frames for the better part of 20 years (starting with the Yonex RD Power 10 Long), so there really was no adjustment for me. I’m only 5’ 9”, so I need all the help I can get on my serve, and I’m serving better now than possibly ever.

I too found the 2020 Ezone 98 + unwieldy. I had a hard time controlling my forehand. It’s listed as having a lower swingweight than the VCORE 98+, but I found it sluggish, especially on the serve.

I don’t know much about the next revision, but I’d bet they’ll add the VDM. Doubt they’ll change much else given they significantly reworked it from the previous version (used to be 16x20, much stiffer).
