A bit of tradition in the game gives it flavour.

Wimbledon is the most prestigious tournament in the world for a reason.

I don't like all the bright colours and crazy outfits a lot of the players are wearing. I think the William's sisters designing their own clothes are partly to blame.

It's easier to get grass stains out of all white clothes. You can just use bleach. Can't use bleach on colors.

Having to wear white? **** that?!

It's interesting that so many people worldwide like the traditions, customs and unique atmosphere of Wimbledon as much as they do. For me, being English, I've always had a slightly different take...

As well as several years of having to endure the embarrassing hype connected to 'Henmania', I found the incredible tennis more than a little tarnished by the stuffiness, the rigid adherence to this custom and tradition (such as eating strawberries and cream; the endless cow-towing to royalty; and the wearing of white...) What really seals it for me is that, when I was growing up anyhow, tennis was the exclusive preserve of the middle/upper classes. People from the likes of the US or Aus may find it hard to believe, but growing up in inner city London, in all the time I was in education as a child/teenager, the amount of occasions I played tennis was precisely this - ZERO TIMES...

All right, now it's meant to be a lot better, but I'm sure as hell not seeing lots of English worldclass players (in fact, I'm not seeing ANY English worldclass players), and I'm definitely not seeing people of colour, or people of less priviledged backgrounds, taking up the game to any great (and successful) extent. In other words, it still seems to be under the control of the same useless middle/upper class twits - that's the same bunch who run Wimbledon - and you know what they can with their formality and stuffy attitudes, don't you?...

The absolute truth is, I think I have more appreciation of all the other major tournaments... I find them much more dynamic, exciting and generally far more appealing - tournies like the US and Aussie Open are so much more 'cool' (for a start, they're not associated with the cringe-making likes of Sue Barker or the dreaded Cliff Richard... for those unfamiliar, they're 2 bastions of the English tennis world.)

Finally, as to the OP... what crap?!... I mean, I'm not advocating the players dress up like the young Agassi once did (remember his Bee-Gee's, Barry Gibb look?... fetching apparel of lavender, yellow, purple and orange?... denim shorts anybody?!)... but this faintly fascist-like stipulation that you must only wear white?... to coin a popular North London phrase (especially popular in recent years amongst supporters of Tottenham Hotspur FC): 'what a load of old bollocks, mate!...'

White is more classier then colors on a grass court, I'm all in favor of keeping that until the end of time.

As for Nadal's pants, I dont mind the Sleeveless shirts, but the Pirate pants have to go.

Speaking of Spurs, have you seen their new 125 year celebration kit for next year? It's half white and half light blue.. look's shocking

Holy crap! Are you sure that's what they're wearing next season? It's a little reminiscent of a Battenburg cake, the Blackburn kit, or some kind of rugby top! Actually this habit of altering club strips to the point of bringing in new colours p's me off a bit, as do these ugly logos. Why - (unlike Barcelona) - can't teams honour their histories and wear the strips we've always associated them with (Barca of course are renowned for not allowing a sponsor's name to bespoil the blue and red top?) And I'd include second kits as well.

Oh, here we go. Another thread hijacked by Brits talking about the trivial details of some weird sport like cricket or rugby or soccer or who knows what and using bizarrre jargon like "bespoil" and "Barca" and "second kits" and "Battenburg cake"...

White keeps you cool in the summer. That's why it was worn originally and it still makes sense today. Wimbledon is also the only tournament not to allow advertising placed around the court--and it is played on a natural surface. All of this is elegant and practical. It is the "purest" tournament we have.

I agree that the sleeveless shirts should not be allowed.

Apparently it's what they used to wear when they first started back in the 1800's so they are going back to it for their anniversary. It's surely all down to selling the shirts. As soon as the kids see the players in a new shirt you can guarentee they will pester their parents until they get it.

Just saws it all to be honest. Anne White, 1986 I believe, what a shocker!

The rule is effectively "predominately white", this is the case for the tournament and in fact anyone that plays there year round, i.e. if you are a member and you play there you must wear white.

I like white at Wimbledon - I like the colors at all other tournaments: nice contrasts.

Plus, 'The G.O.A.T' always wore white wherever he played. ;)

Doesn't this post contradict your previous post about the Wimbledon /all-white clothing rule ?

I think he associates players who have to show up in impeccable white with 'stiff upper lip' upper class people and doesn't find that 'cool' - he has no problem with traditions.
Those stiff upper class people also have a tendency to suck at professional tennis.

It's tradition and also a rule at Wimbledon that the players wear all white. It goes back to the golden days of tennis when the players wore white trousers and long sleeve dress shirts and dresses. I always thought it was a classy thing to do. The All England Club has loosened up a bit in recent years though because the players no longer have to bow/curtsy to the Royal Box on Centre Court like they once had to.

The All England club has been very picky about what sponsers they allow to advertise on the courts, I believe it is only two or three "official" sponsers that are allowed logos and such on the court because those few sponsers have supported Wimbledon for a very long time. The players are also not allowed to have patches on their clothing that advertise sponsers either.

As for that white cat suit that Ann White wore in the mid 80's, the All England CLub promply asked her to change and to not wear it again.

This topic always comes up every year around this time of year. Usually, not until the FO is over, and when people start thinking about grass. Same answers every year too. Maybe this message board needs a FAQ?
