Who was more unlucky that the match was delayed?

Arguments for both:

1. Nadal - his momentum was broken (he won the first set and is leading in the tiebreaker)

2. Gonzo - he has to come up with good serves immediately since he's trailing 2-3 in the tiebreak and can't afford a minibreak at this point

What are your opinions?

Nadal seemed to be struggling with pain in his stomach area, so extra rest and physical therapy might be helpful to him.

Gonzalez might have crucial time to discuss strategy with his coach.

I think that, overall, Nadal is going to benefit more from the break in the match.

Speaking in the long term (for the rest of the tournament), this delay is bad for Nadal, who'd have to win 3 best of 5 matches 3 days in a row to win the title.

EDIT: I voted wrong - I think Gonzalez is more unlucky!

i would say nadal... a lot of his game is based on wearing out his opponent, so gonzo is catching up in terms of rest.

Oh, so now I have to make a new duplicate thread so that you can change your vote.... It's coming....

(Actually, now I realize I should have asked "who got lucky?". It's less confusing that way.)

I thank you for the special consideration :)

The poll question was fine! I just clicked Nadal by accident when I meant to click Gonzalez.

I really think Gonzalez crapped out because he had more momentum going in to the tiebreaker after saving 2 set points in the second set.

1. Gonzalez is a notorious slow starter. He often loses the first set and then comes back to win the match. Now he'll have to deal with his slow start for the second time in the same match.

2. Now Nadal will have more time to rehab his abdominal injury.

Bingo!

This will favor whoever starts more quickly... historically, Nadal.

This will favour Nadal. His abdominals were hurting and he starts well usually. Gonzo historically doesn't. We all know Gonzo won't come back from 2 sets down, or that's very unlikely at least. So, I think this will favour Rafa, especially since there wasn't any real momentum. They were very evenly matched, Rafa won the first in a TB but he could have lost that one, second set it was all square, with Gonzo making the last minibreak, so no break of momentum for Rafa there either.

im not sure about that, i always thought he was sloppy at the begining of his matches

i voted for the third option but i forgot about his abdominal pains so it should favor him

I agree with the answer both.

Gonzo has immediate pressure to perform or the match could be over in 20 min. Also, I do think he has been starting slowly the last two matches.

Rafa, should he win now faces the prospect of playing three days in a row. and re-aggravating the ab injury, especially if gonzo makes a match of it and puts pressure on his serve. 2nd, if im gonzo's coach im telling him to slice the hell out of the ball and/or hit hard, anything that will test how well he bends/stretches and especially pressure the serve. Also, the general coolness of the weather sure wont help any injury.

Gonzo is in a tough spot. He really needs the next two points on his serve IMO, and he is screwed if he starts a little slow.

Both players are ****ed by the weather, but Nadal more. He won the first set and was going into the second with the momentum. This is what Gonzo is probably praying for

I vote for both...or whoever wins the match. They have Delpo waiting for them tomorrow, which has to feel like a kick in the teeth.

Both of them are unlucky. I am sure both of them would have rather finished the match last night. Regardless of who wins, that guy is going to have less rest for the rest of the Open.

The PAPER that rolled on the court happened during times Rafa was controlling the point ... too bad, but oh well. sh*t happens !

Dunno if this has to do with his being a slow starter, but Gonzo was returning terribly. Nadal was spinning in first serves at 90 mph and Gonzo was just shanking and spraying the ball everywhere. Maybe when there's less wind, Nadal will still have trouble with his serve, but Gonzo will be able to follow the ball more easily.

Was there every any doubt?

Gonzo holding to form. He always plays poorly in the first set. The rain delay made him play the first set twice.

Fans were unlucky. What started off as a promising battle produced an anti-climatic end due to poor handling of the circumstances.

I wouldn't call luck dispatching Gonzo in half that time.

No that was skill.
I think the ''luck'' part was the rain, and the day off to heal up.

Not luck: Forehando playing poorly. Rafa playing very solidly today.

Del Potro will get a light hit in today. And a practice set or dos. Hopefully that'll be a great semi....as it should be. These two respect eachother and JM has had some success over Raf.

Here's to two great semis tomorrow. I'm sure glad they did not cancel the tournament based on a thread or two here in this forum, LOL!

See, told you guys that Gonzalez is a slow starter.

6Truth^. Rafa got pretty lucky here, especially if he wins this in just 60 or 70 more minutes.

Del Potro is the lucky one overall, though.

Vamos!

Wow! Nadal done in, what, half an hour?

35 minutes

^hahaha, and I thought I had big feet with my little ol' 14s.

Hey, I think there are a few size 11s ~tReMbLiNg~ on the other half of the draw, too.

So, most people got it wrong. It was Gonzo who got the shaft! He had to come up with something good after being out of the tennis courts for 2 days. Naturally, he couldn't do it, lost ALL REMAINING POINTS in the tiebreak, and got the bagel in the third. Predictable.
