Haha not back . Just came out of retirement for Rafas 19th . After all the Nadal abuse we received through the years it’s nice to be almost there .

McEnroe had said that Nadal was the best serve and volleyer on the tour . Everyone thought he was nuts .....but last night he won from the net !

That’s a great observation . They both actually realized that they were both standing so far back that the serve and volley option was
Open to both of them ; however I think Med exposed a real Nadal weakness ..... Rafa stands so far back that the way to beat him is probably serve and volley .

i was happy to see the 5 sets of tennis from a a fan of the game.. as a rafa fan i didn't care for him not endinging it in 3

Go back and find a serve and volley point won by Nadal to the deuce court or Medvedev to the ad court. Not dozens, just one.

Standing 3 metres behind the baseline when an opponent can hit a slice serve to your backhand is gifting the point, it doesn't actually require real serve and volley skills.

I think he has better hands than Novak and maybe equally good as Federer if he really committed to it.

But half of S&V comes down to the serve, which he's the worst at among the 3. To effectively S&V you either need immense power (which he doesn't have) or extremely good placement (a la Fed & Novak) to induce full stretch soft contact returns that can be put away.

It would take a lot of work for him to be the best at it.

His serve can be really solid but you are right. He has great hands. But if his serve is off it would be hard for him. I think he will do more s&v tho. He is still driven to get better.

No need to patronize. I was am a huge fan of connors jmac becker lendl pete and andre. I also listen to what they have to say. Not what i want them to say.

Not patronising at all. You can be a huge fan, but not understand the skills. Since you chose Agassi, these are his words from his book:

People talk about the game changing, about players growing more powerful, and rackets getting bigger, but the most dramatic change in recent years is the strings. The advent of a new elastic polyester string, which creates vicious topspin, has turned average players into greats, and greats into legends. Average players into greats and greats into legends .. if you're a baseliner.

Really loved his book. Poly definately changed the game. But it still requires skills. Also cahill and others were talking about it during a match at the us open. These guys are more powerful and bigger. If they played the game like the past it would be so unbalanced. It is hard to volley against the speed size and strength of these players.

I think it was McEnroe (makes sense, right?) who once said that Nadal doesn't come to the net as much but when he does he's quite precise. And that he's got a beautiful touch and feel of the net.

This will make helter though lose his sleep tonight. Oh well...

A great display of many passing shots. Becker and Sampras had such great passing shots. Going to the net against them would not have been a great tactic for Nadal or Federer.

Splitting hairs. It's all relative. He has a mediocre serve for an all-time great player.

Nothing any professional tennis player does is mediocre depending on where you set the bar.
