Who would win a Wimbledon match between peak Federer and peak McEnroe.

What do you guys think? Who would win a Wimbledon match between Federer of 2004 or 2006 and McEnroe of 1984.

Kyrgios - absurd talent but no will
Hewit - Hard worker with insufficient physical attributes to have a better career
If you are suggesting that McEnroe had no will.
Shut up and go see John's Matches again.

And I really hope for the sake of humanity the other way around...

Best version of Federer at Wimbledon is from the 2003 SF and F. He played his first and third best grass match there. 2006 is second and has his second best grass performance.

Federer wins slightly, but it would be a tight battle.

Don't be stupid, i just said you can't compare two completely different things.

McEnroe and Fed had completely different equipments in different surface speeds.

Anyone who says it would be tight battle is just ridiculous. Mac is so back behind in time in tennis terms that he could only probably get a tight battle with a modern challenger level player.

Ever see that semis Vinci match where her old-school serve and volley game beat Serena? Anything's possible.

Can you imagine the beating Tomic would give Mac on grass?

Would be worse that Wawrinka roughing up Kyrgios in the locker room.

Does anyone know of any study that compares average speed of the ball in Macs era vs today? Not talking about the surface only but the combination of the surface and racquet and strings.

Exactly this! Federer would punish McEnroe’s groundstrokes, especially his forehand as if he’s Mischa Zverev. With wooden raqcuets it would be closer obviously, but Federer would still prevail I think.

Surely, nostalgic fans will say “You’ve never seen McEnroe play”, but I have watched his Slam finals and more matches against Borg/Connors/Becker etc. And he was great indeed, but it was game over for him when the new power game arrived with guys like Becker. Times have changed a lot back then (in style and equipment), so nothing wrong with it.

Count me among those who remember watching that match. I'm guessing that this was the most one-sided match between them in their heated rivalry. Mac was brilliant that day, and his serve and volley skills haven't been matched by many over the years.

It's so hard to compare eras via hypothetical matches. The game has progressed, and Federer has more overall skills than Mac, and is bigger, stronger and a little faster. Both have incredible racquet skills.

Wood would mostly negate Fed's best shot: topspin forehand. And he would find it hard to impart any kind of speed on the backhand. Mac grew up with wood, his strokes were perfectly suited to that technology, so in my view Mac would prevail, quite easily.
