Why Nadal should consider skipping grass court season....

Should Federer skip the US Open? Hasn't won there since 2008. Maybe he could skip the US Open to stay healthy for the WTF and the Australian Open.

But at least he had two finals in 2014/2015. Nadal has been a nobody since 2011 at grass, and if we take for truth his words about grass being bad for his knees, the choice should be obvious, no?

But on the topic. No, Rafa shouldn't skip grass. His pathetic Grass Court results have been a mixture of him failing to adapt to the surface and also some ill luck. With a bit more luck, he might have probably beaten Muller or avoided zoning opponents who played the match of their lives. If he gets a cakewalk draw, and avoids any potential danger(USO '17) he has as good a chance as any to make a deep run. And if it's not Federer he's facing in case he reaches final, he might even win the whole damn thing. People might think I am delusional, but all he needs is a bit of luck, and he seems to be getting an awful lot of it these days.

Nadal at least gets some valuable points on grass. Without quarters Rafa would probably be nr.2 in 17.

If you are meeting zoning opponents 4-5 years in a row before the quarters, it’s likely not that the opponents are zoning.

The real reason Nadal should not skip the grass court season is because he has nothing to lose by playing.

1) Grass court games are easier on the body and have less chance of injury.
2) The grass court season is extremely short.
3) The grass court season provides a good transition to the hard court summer from the clay.
4) If Nadal makes it to the 2nd week, Wimbledon starts playing much less like a grass court tournament which gives him a good chance to win if he is lucky enough to make it through to the late second week.
5) He’s Nadal. He has a good chance of winning anytime he is on court.

Ya well, he has seen quarters or better every single time from 2008, except 2012 and 2013. What have Nadal's results been in Wimbledon since '11? Analogy FAIL.

Federer did make the quarters at the US Open in 2012. Here're his results from 2009 onwards:

2009: runner-up to Del Potro 6-3 6-7 6-4 6-7 2-6
2010: semi-finalist, losing to Djokovic 7-5 1-6 7-5 2-6 5-7
2011: semi-finalist, losing to Djokovic 7-6 6-4 3-6 2-6 5-7
2012: quarter-finalist, losing to Berdych 6-7 4-6 6-3 3-6
2013: round 4, losing to Robredo 6-7 3-6 4-6
2014: semi-finalist, losing to Cilic 3-6 4-6 4-6
2015: runner-up to Djokovic 4-6 7-5 4-6 4-6
2016: did not play
2017: quarter-finalist, losing to Del Potro 5-7 6-3 6-7 4-6

Everyone knows including Nadal himself that once he gets through the earlier rounds usually he goes all the way and often wins the title. In part that’s because he is so difficult to beat in the latter stages because usually by that time he’s in the “zone”, just look at his SF/F record in slams. But also for Wimbledon the fact that it plays slower in the latter stages due to the grass being worned out Is also an advantage for him. I would never write him off.
