Zsombor Piros retires in Croatia, after losing the first set and first two games in the second to Christopher O'Connell.

A bagel for Dalibor Svrcina as he falls to Sebastian Ofner in Prague.

Cobolli, another promising young Italian, takes out Borna Coric in 3.

One day you make a bold swipe at taking out Zverev, the next day you're losing in the Challengers.

Stefan Kozlov can sympathize, he played Nadal not too long ago, and won more games than he did today.

This guy is such a weird case. Before last year, he hadn't ever cracked the top 300. Years spent in the 300-600 range just toiling away.

Ranking History

Now three Challenger titles in the last 9 months. He just turned 29, wonder if he can make it into the top 100 with a late career surge.

It's the air of the bel paese yo! Until late 2020 he was an unknown Argentine, then he became Italian and turned into a tennis playa ;)

Had been struggling somewhat of late, but he really pooped the party this week, mowing down every single Roman in the draw - Zeppieri, Cobolli, Moroni - each time also overcoming a hostile DavisCup-style crowd.

A mythological figure! Clitemnestra will be proud.

The attention of the tennis world may be squarely on RG this coming week, but the Italian tennis community will be keeping a close eye on the rich Forli 125K challenger, which promises to be a sort of clay national championship for our 2nd-tier and up-and-coming players. The likes of Zeppieri, Nardi, Cecchinato, Cobolli, Mager, Agamennone and Pellegrino (fresh off his second challenger title in Vicenza) will be joined by none other than wild card Lorenzo Two-Setti, who is trying to scrap together a few precious points in order to avoid plummeting outside of the top 90. Foreign foes trying to poop on our party include Dellien, Coric, Taro Daniel, Munar and a handful of Argentinians like Etcheverry and Cerundolo Jr. (the one not currently assaulting taxi drivers or other bystanders).

Jersey-ripping Jerzy Janowicz (see above) makes his long-awaited (???) return at the Poznan challenger. He had started a comeback in early 2020 with some impressive results, but wasn't willing to deal with pandemic insanity, stating at the time that he'd play again if the nonsense subsided. I'm not so sure it has, but he is in the draw as a wild card. Grass lovers head to Surbiton, where Old Man Murray and Young Man Draper highlight the field. Then there's Prostejov, but no one really cares.

In Troisdorf, Lukáš Klein should expect a big bump in the rankings after taking home his first title in the Challengers. A qualifier!

Andrea Pellegrino hands Andrea Collarini a breadstick in consolation, as he picks up his first title of 2022 in Vicenza.

I follow somewhat what's going on in the ITF circuit, but I've honestly never heard of that guy. Perhaps he is one to watch...

They said during the match that he did not have a lot of opportunities to play junior/ITF events outside the States, but he was big college prospect.

@Baseline_Bungle, do you know anything about Hamad Medjedovic?

He's playing Gombos close in Prostejov

Yup - looks like he won that one.

Another excellent prospect from the deadly class of '03. Big serve and forehand, suspect backhand and intangibles. Hi mechanics on the forehand are a bit long and complex (think Gulbis meets Musetti), so I'm not sure how that will translate to the faster surfaces... Was always one of the top guys in juniors but kept losing matches he should win... Seems to be figuring it out now, having recently won a bunch of ITFs. Definitely one to watch.

Medjedovic has received WCs into the Belgrade 250s if memory serves. There's several Serbian prospects born in 2003 that appear to be fast tracking.

Marko Topo is the other youngster I was thinking of. He and Medjedovic have been given quite a few opportunities at the ATP 250 and Challenger levels.

Moose v Cerundolo menor -- will Musetti wipe the floor with menor, or will he live up to his seventh seed?

Murray v Nakashima -- could be very interesting. Nakashima is not afraid to approach the net.

Matteo Gigante is into his second consecutive challenger SF after claiming his first Top-100 win today vs Argentina's Tomas Etcheverry. He made the semis last week in Vicenza (l. to Pellegrino) as a WC and again as a qualifier in Forli, where he has already defeated 5 players of a certain pedigree (Seyboth Wild, De Schepper, Mager, Fabbiano and Etcheverry). Gigante is a 20-yo lefty with a somewhat Norry-ish game, who lacks size (despite his name, which literally means "Giant") but makes up for it with creativity. In order to reach his first final, he'll have to get past top-seeded Lorenzo Two-Setti, who escaped disaster tonight when the awkward junk-baller JM Cerundolo was forced to retire.

In the bottom half, Francesco Passaro continues to make waves after coming out of nowhere to reach the Sanremo final in April (where he was up a break in the 3rd set against bratty Dane Holger Rune) then earning a WC for the Rome MD through the all-Italian pre-qualifying tournament. The 21-yo late bloomer has also come through the qualies in Forli and now takes on the lesser Mallorcan Jaume Munar for a spot in Sunday's final - a tall task, but victory would also assure Passaro his first foray into the top 300.

Francesco Passaro scored the biggest upset of his fledgling career as he defeated world n. 87 Jaume Munar in straight sets to reach the final of the Forli 125 event. The Perugia native awed the sold-out crowd with his composure, intensity and devastating forehand, bullying the feisty Spaniard for nearly two hours in the scorching heat. In six matches this week between qualies and MD, Passaro is yet to lose a set. The live ranking projections now put him somewhere around n. 280, having climbed more than 300 positions since January 1st.

In the second semi-final, Matteo Gigante looked to provide another shocker as he jumped out to a one set lead over top-seeded Musetti, showing off a dazzling array of drop shots and laser backhands that had people wondering which of the two players was the internationally acclaimed prodigy. The diminutive Gigante, however, faded badly from that point forward - some may say he pulled a Musetti - receiving a double breadstick in sets 2 and 3. Nevertheless, his impressive two-week run will propel him close to the top 300, an improvement of nearly 500 spots since the start of the season. Musetti, on the other hand, moves on to the final having lost the first set in all four matches he has played - quite a contrast from his usual lead-blowing persona on the main tour...

A win tomorrow would go a long way in slowing Musetti's tumble down the rankings, as he risked falling outside the top 90 once the points from last year's RG are dropped in 2 weeks. This, however, would also be his most important title to date - his only other challenger win coming two years ago in a lower-level 80-point event, ironically also in Forli'.

A win for Passaro would give him his first career challenger title in his second final (Sanremo in April, l. to Rune) and put him squarely in slam qualies territory.

The match is set for tomorrow at 6 pm Italian, by which point that other boring affair in Paris should be done and dusted.

In Prostejov, Vit Kopriva takes out Dalibor Svrcina, 62 62

For the fifth Challenger in Forli, we will see two young local favorites in Lorenzo Musetti and Franceso Passaro.

Arthur Rinderknech will take on Tomas Barrios Vera in the final of Poznan.

And on the grass, Denis Kudla will play Jordan Thompson for the title in Surbiton.

Finally, Jason Kubler and Tung-lin Wu will battle it out on hard court in Little Rock.

Lorenzo Musetti stayed true to his gameplan for the week as he once again lost the first set before turning it around and taking the Forli 125 title with a 2-6 6-3 6-2 defeat of Francesco Passaro. He now flies to Germany in search of his first career W on grass, and a few more points to puff up his rankings (the points from last year's RG run are yet to be detracted...).

Passaro's dream week fell one set short, as he seemed to run out of gas after a spectacular 45 minutes where he absolutely demolished Musetti with his bone-crushing forehand. He now heads to his hometown of Perugia for the 125 event starting tomorrow. He'll obviously be fatigued, but I'm sure he's eager to put on a show in the very tennis club where he first picked up a racket.
