Darderi put up quite a fight, but it will be Etch-A-Sketch (Tomas Martin Etcheverry) and Radar Munar (Jaume Munar) in the final of Perugia

Daniel Evans
"Devo Evo" will take on Jordan "JT" Thompson tomorrow to see who is the real sheriff of Nottingham.

In Orlando, Jason Kubler "the Clobberer" and Yibing Wu "the Hangzhou Hammer" will battle for the trophy.

Pedro Cachin
of Cordoba will attempt to win his third title of the year against Corentin Moutet of Neuilly.

Finally, young Alexander Shevchenko and veteran Riccardo Bonadio will face each other in Bratislava.

Dan has the first set 6-4, and just broke Thompson to make it 3-2 in the second. Go, Evo! He'll be exhausted when he faces Berry in QC. Still, maybe it was good judgment to warm up for grass in a Challenger.

Tough draw for Leandro Riedi, Cecchinato in the first round in Milan.

@Baseline_Bungle - who do you like between Gigante and Maestrelli?

Tough one - two very different players.

Gigante is a featherweight lefty with loads of talent but very inconsistent. Had a brief run a few weeks ago where he was blowing guys off the court - hitting a level Maestrelli is yet to show. But you just don’t know what side of the bed he’ll wake up.

Maestrelli on the other hand is still very raw, probably less gifted, but IMO has the stuff to eventually become a tour-level pro: big tall dude, strong serve (wip), solid groundstrokes and seems to have a good head on his shoulders.

At his best, Gigante probably wins. But gun to my head, I’d pick the Maestro to take this one.

I’d also keep an eye on Darderi, a feisty Argentalian who showed some real progress the past few weeks - have a feeling he could make a little run.

Bergs is another newbie on grass that snags a title. He attempted but failed to qualify at Rosmalen the week before Ilkley but persevered through qualies there and wound up winning the Challenger with wins vs three ATP champions (Seppi, Popyrin and Sock).

Now he’s DE into Wimby with a well-deserved WC. The Ilkley champion is traditionally offered one of the SW19 WCs.

And what a match it was!

Sock was up 5-2 in the deciding breaker, then worked his way to match point, and then... well, you gotta watch!

(3rd set tiebreaker starts around 2:56:00)

In Buenos Aires, in what was possibly the most tongue-twisting encounter of all time, Conner Huertas Del Pino lost 6-4 in the third set to his older brother Arklon Huertas Del Pino Cordova. At the end, Arklong was heard telling Conner "I still have a little something extra" - presumably referring to part of his last name. My sympathy goes to the umpire of that match.

They still went on to play doubles together and reach the final after two withdrawals, so no love lost between Los Hermanos Huertas del Pino

Aside, why are there no grass tournaments this week? You could have a mini-grass court season at the Challenger level. Why have all 3 in the UK?

Is it truly that cost prohibitive that the USTA or the DTB or the KNLTB....or even Swiss Tennis...can't hold one stinking grass tournament?

I think the main problem is that after Wimby, nobody really cares about grass because of how short the season is.

Yes, but I'm not talking about after Wimbledon, but during Wimbledon. In general, why doesn't the Challenger Tour match the main Tour more closely? Give players a taste of all surfaces, as a stepping stone, hopefully.

Why is it that challengers in Europe, or even South America, look like real tennis tournaments, whereas most of those in America look basically like a friends' league on some nondescript public courts?

Recent challengers in Verona, Salzburg, Amersfoort, or even in poverty-ridden places like Bogota or Iasi feel very similar to ATP 250 events, with nice stands, good crowds, lightshows and music at changeovers, and lots of cheering and clapping and ooohing and ahhhing, just like you'd expect at a pro tennis match (I know for a fact that the center court in Verona this week has consistently topped 1000 people in attendance for the late matches). Such settings obviously make the whole experience more meaningful, more exciting and more motivating for everyone involved, from the fans to the players. The challengers in the States, on the other hand, often do not even have ballboys, let alone stands or people watching...

Is there really so little interest in the States that you can't draw 200 people to watch a high-quality match between top 200 players? And yet these are world-class athletes with skills far superior to your average high school or college football player, who will instead routinely perform in front of tens of thousands of fans...

As evidence, here are pictures of the four "center courts" of this week's challengers: Iasi, Verona, Amersfoort and Rome, GA.

Dutch breakthrough-of-the-year Tim van Rijthoven (101) needed three tiebreaks to fend off Zhu (367) in Indianapolis.

THB, after his grass season he was bound to have a setback on his way to hopefully becoming a steady top-100 player.
First off, he will need to start winning regularly outside of grass. This might take a while.
