Draws are based on mathmatical equality (look into why they created them). Not random placements. Only tennis and hockey use a non standard system. All other sports use the 1v8 2v7 3v6 4v5 so the sums = 9. Which is balance.

True, but what sports have 1 vs 32, 2 vs 31, 3 vs 30, etc? I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Well think what you'd like, but to assume someone would get crushed on grass when the match has never taken place, just because they play closely together on hardcourts, is a dumb assertion. Thats all I'm saying.

You missed my point, it was one of etiquette, of structure.... and who knows why it was, but indeed, it was :). And it wasn't all you were saying, what you said included:

shows you know nothing about tennis.

before you say stupid stuff like that.

It just discredits everytying you have to offer to these forums.

Those three things, which could rightfully be said against many posts on this forum, but not justifiably, imho, against a post that simply disagreed with your court-surface opinions? Anyways - i don't know why I chose to take this one up, and i'm dropping it from here....

Ljubicic has reached the quarters and semis of his first two slams this year, so he is becoming a better slam performer then he used to be, whereas I agree before this year he was a big slam underachiever. He lost in straight sets to Nadal at the French, but that was clay, this is grass. Nadal has a hard time beating him on hard court type surfaces, so Ljubicic would crush him on grass.

Ljubicic and Nadal have both shown to be much better players on hard court than on grass, and Nadal beat him last year on hard court, so I see nothing different here. Ljubicic lost to Gael Monfils this year at Queens who got killed by Blake, who got methodically picked apart by Hewitt. Nadal on the other hand tested Hewitt, who is one of the best grass court players in the world. I think this match is a toss up if they do meet.

federerhoogenbandfan said:
Davydenko has made alot of slam quarters or better in the last year and a half for a poor slam performer. He simply loses to better players he does not choke in his losses. Nadal on grass is not a better player.

Are you crazy? Davydenko has a career record of something like 1-10 on grass, he is like Paradorn on clay. Daveyenko will be lucky to make the 3rd round much less take a set off Nadal if they play on grass.

federerhoogenbandfan said:
Tursonov with a good section can go deep, and he is the type of player Nadal would not beat on grass unless he was having a very off day. His flat strokes, and eastern grips, and how early he hits the ball, would be too much for Nadal on grass.

He might have a better game for grass, but Nadal is much more talented and would have a decent shot here as well.

The guys in the backroom get to determine the seed number, the location of the seeds, and the match ups of the seeds (1vs3 of 1vs4 in the semis for example). It gives them way to much potential to manipulate the draw. As they have done.

Why the conspiracy theories (on the men's side, anyways)? It's explained on the Wimbledon web site that the men's seedings are done based on points, the formula is there. So they cannot manipulate that, there'd be a million people calling foul if they did.

Now the women's seedings: they admit those are completely their own decision, so your argument would apply there, and I personally think by using the two different systems, with one being subjective, on the women's side they are leaving themselves open to such calls....

Ok, if you're bored you may want to proceed with a bit of light teasing, but usually "stupid" does cover it quite well - if you can be bothered.

Maybe if I'm bored i feel like being a little etiquette picky :)

HollerOne makes some good points, people always think they know about matches that haven't even taken place yet.

It wasn't the points as much as the method... and without 'speculation' about future matches, well there wouldn't be many posts on this board!

Wow, Fed really does have a very difficult draw. It is by far the toughest quarter overall. Roddick has a much easier early draw than in years past, but he has Hewitt in his quarter and Baghdatis in the 4th round possibly. The other 2 quarters are much easier than these two overall. A possible match scenario for Fed could be:

1R: Gasquet - one of the best grass courters in the world, one of the worst possible first round matches for anyone.

2R: Henman or Soderling - Henman showed he can still play on grass with tight match with Hewitt. Soderling seems to be a grass court specialist and both of these players are amont the most dangerous non-seeds.

3R: Probably Melzer - this should be an easy match for Fed, his only easy match in the whole tournament, however.

4R: Haas or Berdych - I like Berdych, he has shown he can play with the best on grass. Haas could be dangerous as well, but I don't know if he likes the grass.

Q: Ancic, Karlovic, or Srichaphan - Ancic is much more likely, the other two can be dangerous on grass, but Ancic is coming into his own right now and grass is his favorite surface it seems.

S: This one is pretty open, it could be Blake, Nalbandian, T. Johansson, Bjorkman, Stephanek, or maybe even Phillapousis. If Nalbandian is bothered with injury, this will be Fed's 2nd easiest round IMO. I don't think any of the others in this quarter can play with Fed on grass. If Nalbandian is healthy, it could be trouble.

F: Hewitt, Roddick, Roddick, Ljubicic, Nadal, I could see any of them in the final. I think Agassi and Grosjean are a little out of form, otherwise either could make a run to the final. Same with Safin.

Look, I'm just saying the "coulda shoulda wouldas" need to stop on this forum. Its annoying. I think people should be talking about future "known" match ups, match ups that are currently or have taken place. Instead, the board is cluttered with all of the what-ifs involving Federer and Nadal and its just getting boring. Lets just let it all play out in due time, then we can talk about what has happened. And all the assumptions that Federer is GOAT already is ridiculous. He's still playing, so lets wait until he's done. And there is far too much Nadal bashing on this board that is surface-related. Even Federer has stated himself that the guy can play on all surfaces. Obviously more than a clay courter. Sorry, I just think there are too many bandwagon-jumper, Federer fans on these boards, who want to root for the player who is dominate, instead of rooting for great match ups involving numerous players. This might be off topic, but coming across more and more people who are so obsessed with Federer and his "variety of game" that they would just love to see him crush everyone in every match, and this my friends, is BAD for tennis. But whatever, no one can dominate forever. On the topic of the wimbledon draw, I can only hope Federer goes out before the final for the sake of competition.

I know there's others, but I'm not a big sports fan other than tennis. The one that comes to mind is NCAA basketball. All four quarters are set up like this:
1v16
...
...
...
...
...
...
2v15
and equal numbers in between as well.

Ok, here is another way to look at it. Would any of you guys bet your life on Nadal beating Hewitt in a grass court match. Nadal is good, but not good enough on grass to stake my life on him.

It's scary when people start talking about Nadal potentially getting to the Wimbledon final. WHAA??? Have I been out of the loop for some time?

Yes, he has an easy draw (except for one major obstacle in the 3rd round that he'll be lucky as hell to get out of). But this is best of 5. Can Nadal really last in a best of 5 match on his absolute worst surface? He was playing okay in Queen's, but let's face it, he didn't exactly have huge opposition. Hewitt didn't really play that well until the final. From the 1st round he's going to be meeting guys that will just savor this opportunity to face Nadal on grass. Gilles Muller was the lucky man last year.

What question? I said Nadal isn't going to last, and he'll either go out in the 3rd round against Agassi, or earlier.

It's called speculation. Nothing beats looking at a fresh new draw and making predictions.

I didn't think of that, but they do not seed by rank there either. Tennis is very similar actually to NCAA basketball, the only difference is that they only have one set of seeds and NCAA basketball seeds all 4 quarters. For example, if all 4 #1 seeds reach the semis, there is not #1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3, it is completely random who plays who there actually. In tennis #1 and #2 can't play in the semis, but in NCAA basketball they can. Similarly, a #4 seed could be ranked anywhere from 13-16, so when they play the #1, it is not #1 vs #16 according to the rankings, it could be #14 vs #1, similar to the way tennis is. I think it is random like tennis.

Yeah, because those guys have done so well on grass in the past. And they never get nervous in big matches.
This would be a good point ... except we're talking about Nadal. Despite what many of the "Don't call it 'til it happens" crowd writes, Nadal isn't any good on Grass ... yet.

Most of Federer's matches look to be good ones for TV. Blake and Nadal seem to have pretty "easy" draws ... as if there are such things on Grass.

Some fun matchups I'd love to see from the draw (which will never be televised):
R1 - Sanguinetti v. Kim (Sanguinetti)
Johansson v. Bjorkman (?)
Rusedski v. Safin (They *might* even televise it...)
Fish v. Ginepri (I say Robbi will win, but how the heck did he get seeded that high?)

R2 - Srichaphan v.  Karlovic  (?)
Sanguinetti v. Ancic (Ancic)

Other matches I'm looking forward to:
R3 - Grosjean v. Baghdatis (Grosjean)
Roddick v. Murray (Roddick)
Nadal v. Agassi (Agassi)

Looks like FUN!!!

- KK

You know, I don't think Roger will be too scared.
These are the 'difficult' opponents in his quarter:

Gasquet - beaten him the last 3 times they played
Henman - beaten him the last 3 times they've played
Haas - beaten him the last 6 times they've played
Berdych - beaten him the last 3 times they've played
Karlovic - beaten him the only 2 times they've played
Ancic - beaten him the last 3 times they've played.....
(although Ancic was the last person to beat Fed on grass in 2002)

so what's the panic?

Well, the last TWO players to beat Federer at Wimbledon were Ancic in 2002 AND Henman in 2001.

I thought Joachim Johannson was planning to make a comeback at this Wimbledon? I was really looking forward to watching him play... :(

Pim Pim made a comeback early this year at the SAP Open in February. He lost in the first round to a just graduated college player, Sam Warburg from Stanford. I guess he realized he wasn't quite ready to come back and I don't think he's played another ATP match since. :(

I would also love to see him fully back again.

tough draw for fed alright but hey he's the defending champ right .

safin - rusedski 1st round

potential 2nd round - mirnyi-flipper

ivan luby - f. lopez 1st round smells like an upset

arthurs - santoro 1st round would be fun

Agassi would be bad news for Nadal on faster courts in general.
He does not get bothered by lefies like Federer.
Agassi would eat Nadal's serves like snacks.

But the factor here is differences in 16 years of age.

Andre Has An Amazing Draw

Anyone else agree? I mean Nadal on Grass? That is one Agassi should definitely be able to win. His draw is pretty favorable. He could get to the quarters no sweat and then have a battle with Ljubicic.

LowProfile

I dunno. Agassi hasn't been in the best form. I'm pretty sure Nadal would have played Henman tougher than Agassi did at Queens. It'll all depend on Agassi's physical condition.

Yeah, the draw is pretty favorable! He still has to play well though.

Ljubicic could get to the quarters, but only if he gets past his first round. Lopez is damn good on grass.

Course he has an easy draw, Andre will go into the semis and knock Nadal out for sure. Then if only he can upset Hewitt/Roddick........... and somehow find luck to beat Fed in the final

Last year I'd say with 100% certainty that he would get to the semis and very possibly even the finals.

Now that he's announced his intention to retire in 3 months, you can see that he is really starting to feel it and he knows that he doesn't have much more left in the tank.

But I do really believe that if he plays as well as his body will allow right now, he will do great things.

Wimbledon Draw Reactions

after looking at the draws I have a few things to say:

1 - Roger vs Gasquet 1st round???.... Bizarre but fun.. what if??
2 - Henman is SO screwed :) ( painful first two rounds)
3 - I like Nalbandian's chances ..... should be a walk in the park until semis for him
4 - Hewitt's got a nice quarter too as well as Ljubicic.
5 - Roger's quarter is ugly.

ok, so it seems that you believe that Blake is going to be a walk in the Park on grass. Well, we will have to see about that..

not necessarely, but I think Nalbandian can get through him .... mind you he still has to get there to meet Nalbandian...... so does Nalbandian :)

Not to spoil the Ljubicic love, but other than his serve, he played like crap at Queen's Club. He doesn't seem to have the mental strength to win enough big points in tiebreaks and at the ends of sets. And you've got to have that, especially on grass at Wimbly.
