World Team Tennis

Anyone else out there really enjoying World Team Tennis? The Tennis Channel has had a ton of coverage lately and is replaying several matches throughout the day and night.

I've never gotten into it before, but it's a pretty neat format and I enjoy watching the not-so-well-known players. Some of them are really good.

Anyways, what do y'all think?

I went to two matches in Sacramento this week (Boston v Sacto, then Boston v Sacto again in the wildcard playoff). It's kind of fun, it's fast and chaotic unlike actual pro tournaments. I went as someone's guest, so I don't know that I would be willing to pay and drive that far otherwise, but for areas that don't get any tennis, I can see how they would enjoy it. The quality of tennis is all over the place, but Sacramento has a knack for finding one good young player each year. They had Nicole Vaidisova before anyone had heard of her and this year they had Tammy Hendler, who could become a Top 50 player (she is definitely a fighter on court). http://www.sacbee.com/100/story/1099470.html

It's a short season and I know that BJK encourages lots of community involvement from the teams, so they are probably helping the overall game of tennis in some way.

Thanks. Actually was watching the women's singles championship between Safina and Pennetta, but I think I'd prefer WTT.

I like the camera work at the only one I saw on TV. The ball looked like it was actually going fast.

Hi, can someone explain to me the format of a world team tennis match?

I understand that each team as a set roster composing of 5 or 6 players..Do all of them get a chance to play?

Take the team NY Sportimes for example, if they were to play, does that mean John McEnroe would be playing?

McEnroe will play for whatever match or matches he is signed to play. He does not play every night for them, none of the 'marquee' players do. As for the rules, best to go to www.wtt.com for more information on that, I can never explain it properly.

WTT is awesome! We are filming most of the Washington Kastles' matches here in DC. We'll have some stuff up shortly -- just got Venus Williams! Kournikova tomorrow.

Hasn't Kournikova pulled out of play with a wrist injury? I think she still might be there, on the bench, though.

Will you guys also cover the WTT finals in DC? I may try to get tickets to that one. I went to the home opener last year with Serena, and I remember her being completely jetlagged from flying over from Wimbledon. Don't remember if I saw you guys at WTT last year, but Ive spied you in DC before, usually at Legg Mason. Keep up the good work!

Yep, Kournikova is out. She didn't play Monday against Philly (but was at the match and interacted with juniors) and a Comcast Sportsnet report/interview stated that she was out for the season.

And in 2007 they had Michelle Larcher de Brito (youngest player ever to be drafted by a WTT team).
