would playing ping-pong (table tennis) help your own tennis game?

just curious. I find that i play table tennis almost every day, and i think it made me more aware of the importance of shot placement & mental concentration.

are there potential benefits for your tennis game from playing table tennis?

thanks for all answers/comments/verbal answers, etc....

If your feeling the benefits, why ask?

sorry azn if i seem a bit redundant with my question. thanks for the heads up though azn.

er, i still ask because i feel that there are more hidden benefits waiting to be discovered...i am only aware of two of the benefits-the emphasis of importance of placement & the need to keep your concentration.

i should have clarified my question: i am wondering if there are anything else in table tennis that can be applied to tennis...

(i understand there are variables to the question: i.e. doubles vs. singles, penhold grip vs. shakehand grip, etc...)

I dont play ping-pong but alot of my team mates that play tennis do, but i think it would mostly only help with hand-to-eye coordination, etc.

I played competively and my ustta rating at the time was in the lower 2000 level (equivelant to a 5.0 tennis player). That was before I picked up tennis and quit table tennis. To answer your question, it will definetly not help your tennis game as far as the physical aspects go. The strokes (if you have been traditionally taught) are not even remotely similar to tennis strokes and neither is the footwork. The benefits you will gain is a very good understanding of various concepts and strategies and perhaps mental strength if you are at a high level, but like I said earlier...any physical aspect of table tennis will not help your tennis game.

Hand-Eye coordiantion is a physical aspect last time I checked. It will help with your hand-eye coordination as stated earlier it will also help you to watch the ball as you hit. It also helps you better recongize angles and you can execute some strategy from ping-pong into tennis and vice versa.

ok...

out of personal experience, I would disagree with everything except the last sentence about recognizing angles and strategy. It surely did not help me to watch the ball as I hit, merely for the fact that tennis is a snails pace compared to table tennis and the fact that you have so much time and space to work with in tennis(relatively speaking) may have an opposite effect (I can elaborate if need be). Thats the way it was for me. The only thing that transitioned well for me was as stated earlier: understanding various concepts and strategies.

I think tennis help your ping-pong 4 sure. I think tennis does not help tour ping pong though, it messes it up most of the times but..

for me ping pong is the place where i can do what i can't in tennis, incredible pace and shots without many effort, it's great!
