would they have booed fed?

It's dangerous. If you boo the GOAT it is very likely you will spontaneous combust and be immediately transported to tennis hell. Which means watching Vika and Maria play a match forever.

Nope cause fed would not have ran off the court in the same situation.

Nadal wouldn't run off if he was going to retire the match.
Even though He has big pain in his back, he didn't want to ruin wawrinka's moment. Nobody wants to be given trophy by retired opponent. Especially in GS. And nadal knew that "you don't retire in final" that's classic move there.
He could've ruined both's reputation if he retired in final.
Even ATP 800 ranked players know that too

Awww thanks Backbored, it's good to be back! And I'll try being nicer but no guarantees.

Well don’t hurt yourself. Remember we have 11 months and 3 more slams to go.
Now I think Fed would have done the same thing, finishing the game in pain.

Can someone tell me what Nadal did exactly? I didn't catch the match live and I haven't see the whole thing. Thank you!

Thank you! But he just left the court for treatment. Why the booing?

Imo, a mixture of a couple of things.
a) Wawrinka got pretty agitated during the MTO. He demanded to know, what Rafa was being treated for and shouted 'He always does this' - indicating Rafa was taking a strategic MTO to cool off a hot opponent
b) at this point in time, the audience was firmly behind the underdog, who was playing fantastic tennis and outplaying Rafa
c) when Rafa then comes running back - combined with Rafa's rep among some fans of taking strategic MTO's - he got booed as a part of the audience, due to past history and Waw's agitation, probably thought he wasn't really injured.

Once they realized, after 20-25 minutes or so, that Rafa was indeed properly injured, they started cheering for him again to make up for the booing and to bring him back into the match as he was now the underdog.

Fed would never have done it in the first place. One of the things I've always liked about him is that he just gets on with things with no drama involved, exactly how the game should be played.

From my perspective.

I think the somewhat heated argument between Stan and the chair umpire that went on the entire break may have added to the tension in the stands. Stan wanted to know what kind of injury Rafa was being treated for. The chair said he was not entitled to know the specifics of the injury or treatment. I could only hear bits and pieces of the conversation but I think that was what was going on.

For me I think Stan outplayed Rafa plain and simple. Then at some point he (Rafa) started having muscle spasms and wanted to know if this was a more serious problem. He then called for a medical time out to evaluate his back.

Stan was ticked off for not only having the time out, but also the timing of it. He had his game face on and was playing even better than he had against Novak in the previous game. On the other hand, I must say as a fan of Rafa the loss was easier to take when being sleep deprived.

I think booing at a player who is or may be injury is just mean.

First off, Fed didn't have a history of MTOs that goes all the way back to the beginning of his career.

So even if he decided to take a MTO and time away from court, it'll be the first time he's ever done it and the audience will not think twice about it.

Nadal?

His frequent use and abuse of the MTO system is the one tarnishing point in his career that will be talked about forever. Like a blot of black ink on an otherwise prestine white shirt.

So what's your point? You think crowd booed at him not for MTOs (in this matches and almost all prior matches) but for something else (color, race, country etc)?

I’m not sure about your point, but do you think the crowd was correct in booing Tomic off the court as well?

Let me ask you : Do you think the crowd would've booed if Nadal if he had quit in the first round match against Tomic? I don't think so.

Tomic has forever under-delivered and known as "Tomic the tank engine". Crowd went here we go again and that's why they booed. Nadal took too many MTOs leading up to the finals and got booed when he did it in the finals as well. If Fed had done that (not just finals but took MTOs right, left and center), crowd would boo him too. Djokovic was booed up until few years ago when he would retire in the middle of the matches when losing.

All I’m saying is just b/c someone is booing it doesn’t mean they are correct, when it comes to knowing if a player is injured or not. That’s why we have MTO. In my opinion the masses in the stands were wrong on both counts. Remember Tomic is having hip surgery.
