X'mas String Advice for a NG / SG or Multi setup

Hi guys, x'mas is a great excuse to try out expensive strings. Hoping to get advise on what I should get.

I am currently playing with a Dunlop 4d 200 16x19 strung with x1 biphase 18g @ 58 lbs. I tend to fray the strings after 2 sessions but I don't seem to break them until 3-4 mths down the road. I play an all-court game for singles and also doubles.

Have been itching to try out a NG setup but its still way too expensive as I need to string 2 racquets. For x'mas, I am hoping to string VS 16g or 17g mains with durable SG or multi crosses. My stringer suggested multifeel (he's a tecnifibre stringer). Any other suggestions?

Should I increase tension when I string gut and what should be the tension difference between NG mains and the SG/multi crosses? Thank you.

Use synthetic gut as a cross. It will hold tension better than a multi and costs less. For a gut like softer feel I recommend Forten Sweet in natural and for a crisper feel use Prince Syn Gut although any syn gut will do.

Going from an 18 gauge multi to 17 gauge gut will take some time to acclimate but will definitely provide better feel, a larger sweet spot and much longer playability. VS will need a 5-7% tension increase over your current set up. Actually I would start with Pacific Classic 17 and Forten Sweet 17 at a pound lower than your current tension as this will string up stiffer to start. Also it’s the same cost as your current setup but should perform better in your open string pattern.

Tecnifibre's Multifeel is a good cross string for you too, having the benefits of both a solid core (tension retention) *and* a soft feel (softer wraps).

OTOH, in the past when Wilson offered its larger racquets and VS couldn't cover the stringbed, they suggested pairing it with NXT.

The switch to 17 gauge VS already increases stiffness a marginal amount too. Anything with a solid core will be stiffer still at the same tension, so you could just string both at the same tension you use, to me, as you switch over from your X-1. If you opted for a full multi as your cross, you might have to raise its tension, let's say by 2 lbs.

I would use the gut for the mains, as thats what the primary feel you would get, and I would also stick with the x1 for the cross(maybe switch to a larger gauge for durability), as that way you are only changing 1 variable and you can then determine if you like that one change before you switch another variable, I would also increase the gut to approx. 62-64 lbs. but thats my likes, and everyone has their preferences, but most increase the tension of gut a few lbs. over syn. gut or multi strings, due to guts properties, and keep the X1 the same tension. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy the gut, its the best string out there in my opinion.

I disagree - if you continue using a prime multi for the crosses and the Natty gut in the mains, the prime multi will hold the tension far better than any synthetic gut out there ( Forten Sweet, Gosen OG etc.)

Continue using X-One as your multi cross or for a better, softer, crisper and more uniform feel, try the Babolat Xcel Power Prime Multi as a cross string. Both these multis will keeping their tension and elasticity FAR BETTER AND LONGER, than any synthetic gut will do.

You could also consider TECNIFIBRE NRG2 or Wilson [K] Gut or Wilson NXT tour as your prime Multi - but X-One and Xcel Power are in a class of their own in my view.

Prince Synthetic gut is poor at holding tension, so suggesting that string as a good string for holding tension is beyond me

A natural gut and expensive multi combo would be great (and still expensive! lol), if i string VS and X1 (same gauge), which one would probably break 1st? Just curious.

Any other suggestions for Gut and Syn Gut / Multi hybrids?

Same gauge - Natty gut will last longer than X-One and the X-One will probably break from the Natty gut cutting into it.... Natty gut is far more durable than what most believe.
