greatest final or not? big debate. a conversation til USO. I'd love I see all tennis matches!!! I did not.
the problem with greatest is the definition: highest level? more entertaining? match with the more drama?

All can write about are my favorites matches. GS matches I'v seen live and I enjoyed the most. my top 5 (men and women), and the reasons why. what yours?

MEN
1 Federer/ Nadal W 08 (the drama, the rain, the night falling, Fed 2 sets down, at stake: 6th titles in a row for Fed, first channel slam for rafa since 1980, great rivalry, the tie break)
2 Wilander/ Lendl USO 19/88 (loved Wilander, leadership at stake, great match, 5 hours marathon, day-evening sessions in one match, great rivalry: 5th finals between guys)
3 Chang/ Lendl FO 89 (so much drama! unknown player vs king. david vs goliath. involved crowd. Chang 2 sets down. lendl falling down on dirt. cramps. under-arm serve. Chang's tears)
4 Ivanisevic/ Rafter W 01 (monday's crowd, 9-7 in 5th, Ivanisevic won after 3 losses, Goran's joy)
5 Chang/ Connors FO 91 (opposite player: young vs old, connors fightint like crazy, electric atmosphere, insane 4th set, Connors almost collapsed at the end, could not leave court without help, amazing shots)

also Sampras/ Corretja USO 96 (amazing match, unexpected close match, Sampras ill at the end, night match, electric atmosphere); Gaudio/ Coria FO 04 (big upset, Gaudio 2 sets down, cramps, drama, drama and drama, both players in tears); Edberg/Chang USO 92 (opposite styles, looks. FO final's revenge, 5 hours epic); Edberg/ Becker W 90 (serve and volley, 2 great champions, 3rd final in a row between bess grass court players, terrific shots); Agassi/ Blake USO 05 (old agassi survived, suspens, wonderful shots, delighted crowd); Kerten/ Norman FO 00 (beloved Guga in Paris's garden, Norman saved 11 match points! almost 4 hours for 4 sets, amazing 4th set, thrilling tie break); Krajicek/ T Martin W 96 (18-16 in 5th set !! Martin choked); Roddick/ Chang FO 01 (5 sets, amazing atmosphere, opposite style, rod's cramps, Roddick was so fresh, he showed so many emotions, was fun, looked like Jim carrey ;-)), Agassi/ Medvedev FO 99 (Agassi'tears, the american 2 sets down, great shots, Agassi became 5th man to win all slams, unexpected victory after 2 painfull losses in finals, Agassi was in the middle of nowhere before he won FO). Sampras/ Agassi USO 01, Connors/ Krickstein (USO 91), Agassi/ Bagdhatis (USO 06). Did not see live Sampras/ Courier and Federer neither Safin/ Federer in Australia. too bad

WOMEN

1 Graf/ Hingis FO 99 (so much drama. most dramatic match I've ever seen. noboby expected Graf to win anymore. Hingis's nervous breakdown, Graf doing the ola with crowd, Hingis left the court then came back with mother, in tears, very moving, in extase Graf's speech after victory)
2 V Williams/ Davenport W 05 (VW's comeback, amazing shots, 9-7 in final set, Venus did not win a slam for years)
3 Sabatini/ Fernandez FO 93 (Gaby leading 5-1 after winning first set, had so many matchpoints, roller coaster match, in 3rd, impossible to guess who was going to win, 3h30 marathon, exulting crowd)
4 Graf/ Novotna W 93 (Jana choked, in tears on Duchess's shoulder, great opposition of styles)
5 Graf/ Sanchez FO 96 (Graf's comeback, Sanchez served twice for the match, both players in tears at the end, 10-8 in final set)

also Graf/ Seles FO 92 (#1 vs #2, amazing shots, 10-8 in 3rd set, Seles served twice but Graf survived, then lost a stunning match); Graf/ Sabatini W 92 (8-6 in final set); Graf/ Seles USO 95 (Seles's comeback, great match); Capriati/ Clijsters FO 01 (Capriati's comeback, 12-10 in final set); Seles/ Capriati USO 91 (what a fight, tie break in final set); Henin/ S Williams FO 03 (great opposition of style, amazing match, dramatic 3rd set, terrible crowd after Henin cheating, Serena's tears after devasting loss). Did not see epic Rubin/ sanchez in Australia. neither Capriati/ Hingis AO's final.

Hewitt/Baghdatis '08 AO.

One of the most emotional and intense early round matches I've ever seen, latest finishing match and great play from both players. So much drama and entertainment in this one, left both players in tears afterwards.

1.Nadal-Fed '08 W

3.Goran-Rafter '01 W
4.Sampras-Agassi '01 USO
5.Agassi-Blake '05 USO

2.Henin-Capriati '03 USO
3.Seles-Capriati '91 USO
4.Capriati-Hingis '02 AO

I think drama is more important to me than high level of play(though some I listed have both)

Connors-Krickstein '91 is my all time favorite match. Nadal-Fed at Wimby this year was a close second.

What about Capriati/Clijsters 2001 French Open final?

It was an excellent match and Kim was so close to getting her first grandslam, but nevertheless it was a great match.

What about Capriati/Clijsters 2001 French Open final?

You read my thoughts. The upcoming Clijsters almost won. I'm Belgian, so for me the match was very important. Who would have guessed at that moment Clijsters and especially Henin would have so many more opportunities to win GS tournaments.

Rafter-Ivanisevic (incredible story, Goran winning the tournament in what was to be one of the last matches of his carreer, after three rather unlucky runner up places, the fact that it had to be continued on monday, the emotion)
Federer-Nadal (last wimbledon, pivotal match in history, the rain breaks, the epic outcome, Nadal winning Wimbledon before Federer Roland Garros, we will still have to see how Federer deals with this, I cannot help but think this is a fatal blow, he pretty much said so himself)
Agassi-Medvedev (very important match, without it no one would even dare to mention Agassi in the list of GOATs, in the end it was far more difficult for AA to win the French than Wimby, although he reached the FO final twice in the early stages of his carreer)
Chang-Lendl (although in retrospect I am more sympathetic towards Lendl and find Chang a rather unworthy GS winner, at the time it was a huge shock and seeing the favourite crumble against a young cramp-plagued player was unbelievable)
... I am thinking about the fifth...

I liked the '04 French Open final: Coria vs. Gaudio. Unbelievable match with more twists and turns than an alpine mountain road. Everyone expected Coria to win before the match even started and sure enough, he was up 6-0 6-3 4-3 he just totally lost it due to nerves/fatigue/cramps. There was an unbelievable point with Coria serving at 4-4 40-15 which Gaudio won, and it really loosened him up. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ob0Z0yFDU_w

In the 4th set, Coria looked about ready to retire, he wasn't moving at all. The crowd became totally confused. And then he still had 2 match points in the 5th set at 6-5. Maybe not the best quality match, but it sure made up for it in terms of drama.

Yeah the match had a lot of tension - and choking - in it. I guess people don't really remember it because it was virtually the end of Coria's carreer, save an improbable comeback now, and Gaudio will be remembered as one of the worst GS winners ever. The lack of tennis history being written by this match doesn't give it a status of an all time classic in the eyes of many.
