I think it’s a welcome development and I’m sure the ATP are in a position to know the truth based on the the report of the ATP doctor who examined the girlfriend after the alleged suicide attempt. It will either clear his name, or if found guilty, he will be given appropriate punishment.

Didn't the alleged suicide attempt take place at the Laver Cup 2019? There is no mention of investigating the Laver Cup even though In May 2019, the Laver Cup became an officially sanctioned ATP Tour event.

What are they going to do though? They would need to get in touch with the hotel manager in Shanghai. Have them go through employment records to see if any current staff were working during Zverev’s stay. And then ask the manager to interview them? Or send somebody from the ATP who manages operations in Asia to the hotel to investigate? And all this relies on the willingness of hotel staff to cooperate. I have a hunch they prob couldn’t care less, especially since this isn’t part of a formal criminal proceeding.

I just don’t see any practical way to go about it.

ATP players stay in that hotel. They need business. Of course they will comply. It must be a huge source of revenue for them. Allegedly, many people helped her hide in the hotel lobby. So, there are multiple witnesses according to her. Then the ATP doctor was involved.

Not sure what they are going to do if proven. It remains to be seen.

I highly doubt an upscale hotel in Shanghai is dependent on a once a year tennis tournament. And who are these people who helped her hide? Were they hotel employees/guests? How do you find these witnesses?

The ATP knows there’s virtually no chance anything comes out of this. This is all just for show.

To put things in perspective here, there were recently two higher profile cases with confirmed physical abuse, one involving Coman, the other Boateng, both Bayern Munich players. Both cases went to trial and both players had to pay a large fine. I don’t know what the ATP can do other than some kind of financial retribution. And this is a worst case scenario.

Well Zverev’s ex hasn’t filed any sort of criminal complaint…..

For him the reputation is everything. PR. Destroying him publicly and potentially losing sponsors and admiration are the hugest blows.
They apparently already withdrew him from promo from the ATP World Finals, Adidas and Laver Cup. The ATP I saw myself. So many candidates to choose to play the finals but not him. For now during the kind of off-season (smart timing on ATP) he becomes persona non grata. He's not a part of the big 3 so not untouchable. He could be replaced by others.
I do agree with you that tennis is elite that's why the hatred when the fans act like soccer/football fans.
I'd take a look from sponsors and ATP perspective. They can afford to kind of lose Zverev unlike the Big 3.
My take is that it might have been an abusive relationship. It certainly sounds unhealthy. I won't judge Olya's timing.
Sorry to be cynical but I was wondering if she wasn't offered a NDA and hush money and instead chose war and hatred from Zverev's fans?

There's significant evidence against Zverev including photographic records of apparent wounds on himself and his ex-gf, and third and fourth parties who were around when the abuse was happening. I just don't know how Zverev is going to explain that.

It used to be that criminal justice was the job of law enforcement and not a corporate responsibility. Am I too old-fashioned? Is it because the girl refused to sue? I'm just afraid it sets a dangerous precedent--a player can have his career unrightfully disrupted or even jeopardized by what started as a baseless allegation. Not saying this applies to Zverev's case but in extreme cases it just takes one crazy adoring fan (get the reference?) to screw a player up.
The sheer attempt at you trying to compare the person who stabbed Seles to an ex girlfriend who has provided pictures of bruises and claims of a suicide attempt at the hands of Zverev is staggering. You can say “not saying this applies to Zverev” but this is about Zverev and domestic violence. Not a person with severe issues stabbing Seles.

The gall of you people.

I've heard 2 or 3 abuse stories, don't remember the details exactly. These things are usually kept confidential to protect the victims. I don't know if that Rothenberg guy is making all the stories up or paying people to make up stories, or if these things could be true.
Huh? How could Rothenburg be making you these stories when it’s literally the ex girlfriend of Zverev claiming and providing proof of what she says Zverev did to her. And to even say that he’s paying people to make them up? are you kidding?

Her account of the events indicate that they were in a toxic relationship. I really doubt that a judge would rule this as domestic abuse, even if they believe her version. They will make him pay a million or two, that’s about it.

Not sure how a toxic relationship somehow excuses domestic abuse. All domestic violence occurs in toxic relationships. Clearly they’re toxic if the male or female is beating the partner.

It doesn’t excuse the abuse. What I’m saying is that what Olya describes is technically called situational couple violence and the sentences are usually lenient and almost always monetary. See the cases of Coman and Boateng I linked to.

Disturbing but it kinda made me laugh.

You’re charged with beating up your spouse or significant other. Your defense is you were in a toxic relationship. o_O Yeh, no kidding.

Is this really controversial on TTW. Even if you‘re in a “toxic” relationship you’re not allowed to beat up your partner. At least in my culture. I want to be culturally sensitive.

You made insults about my culture. That is totally unacceptable.

I skimmed the links. Yeh, looks like in some places it is something of a get out of jail card. Good job. 8-B I don‘t think the rationale is sound.

Incidentally, they’re not cases they’re news accounts of cases and not likely binding precedents in any other forum.

I really don't think he made that crap up. He's not the greatest of people, but even he surely has some morals or principals to not do something like that.

If he did make up the stories, then he is a degenerate, and one of the worst kinds of people on the planet.

He did make up the story about the blood sugar monitor being a mobile phone used to receive coaching via text messages. That was way before the Olya allegations and Zverev was already not talking to him or answering his questions in the pressers.
He also made up a story about one known tennis commentator calling Venus Williams gorilla on TV. It cost the commentator his carrier, even though the story turned out to be a lie. He never apologised by the way,

Exactly, nobody ever called Venus a "gorilla." Twitter/FB morons haven't a clue that "guerilla" is not the same as "gorilla."

"Although tennis experts commonly use the term 'guerrilla tennis' to describe aggressive tactics, ESPN “bowed to the Twitter universe of haters and those ignorant of tennis who thought (Adler) used the word gorilla to describe Venus Williams that day."

You asked for the evidence, and it's in that article. You can deliberately shut your eyes and ears to the evidence, but the investigation will not. If you objection to Slate is political, this article is just straight reporting, it's not intersectional cult nonsense.

"Providing proof" is a slightly strong statement...

It's a weird opening to the story: "Olga Sharypova has recently been putting the evidence of her story back together as best she can through scattered images that still linger on the phones of her friends. " Why don't they linger on her own phone? Why is she showing Rothenberg screenshots of a WhatsApp conversation instead of the WhatsApp conversation itself? Screenshots are easily fabricated, the time stamp of WhatsApp messages not so much.

“It wasn’t our normal fight—it was really scary,” Sharypova said. “I was screaming, and because of that he threw me down onto the bed.."

There's three sides to every story so when someone's telling you there was such a thing as a "normal fight"(!) and "I was screaming" I suspect you can take it that they're making an admission that their own behaviour was less than savoury without telling you exactly how bad it was.

Just because I'm a paid up member of the ABV club doesn't mean I'm inclined to assume the story is entirely true. I'm not inclined to believe he's innocent of all charges either, but Sharypova's story has a suspicion of having some truths, some half truths, some outright lies, a lot of omissions and a twisting of the tale to ensure there's only one villain and it's not her.

Unless there's recorded evidence of everything that happened we'll never know the whole truth of what happened but only time will tell how much of her story turns out to be reliable.

Why is this thread so difficult for the TTW ownership? Why can some not accept the fact that relationships can be so hard and that laws ought to protect both partners in? What is it here? Has some of you been hurt so badly that reading this is unacceptable? Allowing a thread on this topic but then not giving posters that think Zverev deserves more respect a chance is just an obstruction here.

Just some very general observations: Lots of things have changed in the last decades. Society has become more tolerant in some ways, less so in others, especially violence.* Sponsors are heaping far more money on the top tennis players but are also more weary of anything which might harm the brand. This puts public figures in a riskier place. It is much easier to investigate certain stuff and find digital traces. Reporters like Ben have a much easier time to hear the supposed victim and get hear views out then others could 20 years ago. Things which might have been 'settled' without much noise are now much more likely to go public. Doesn't mean that I have any clue what happened and I actually try hard to not have an opinion on said matter...

This forum unlike even reddit is very old-school. Now women are more heard because they usually were thrown under a bus.
The hatred Olya got. The fact that even now famous footballers get away with "domestic violence" case ruling with just a fine instead of not even a public service is disgusting.

After one of the beatings, these mutual friends too photos of Sharypova's battered body, at the same time Zverev appeared on TV after a match with visible scratches on his neck.

And who has seen those photos?
Proof that those photos were made after that alleged battle with Zverev?
Any evidence that the woman started it all?

I don't trust Russian women at all.

Sounds like you desperately want to paint Olya as a liar despite all the proof @bjsnider provided you. And then you simply say “I don’t trust Russian women”. You just look like a sexist clown after that comment.

No big hit.. Dude can't even beat a gassed, past prime 34 year old Djokovic at his WORST slam historically. LOL. I don't want some bum like that dominating my league anyways
