The sad thing was Fed was pretty much in total control by the end of the third set, was the better player throughout set 4, then it was basically a train wreck unfolding in front of us...

So true. However, before Wimbledon, we weren't sure if he could gain 50% of his brilliant game, so let's just say we should be happy Roger still plays like a top player after all the problems with injuries and surgery. He may get another shot at USO this year. Let's hope for a great finish to the year for Federer!

True, but current Roger Federer is well aware that winning another slam gets more and more unlikely with every passing day. He was perhaps a tiebreak away from the final, and to lose the 4th set in the manner he did must have been not only terribly devastating, but a huge blow to his ego. You yourself wrote "I don't care if he's 35, he should NEVER have lost to this inconsequential non-entity on GRASS." Perhaps Roger feels the same way, and after blowing that game, wanted the fans to think injury was the reason.

Roger lost to Milos at the beginning of the year in Brisbane and that was before Roger had his back/knee issues. Can you guys stop dissing a motivated player who wants to better himself? Criticize the mugs who can't beat top ten players, not a a guy who does everything possible to improve. Roger was outplayed today at the end of the day. He probably wasn't physically or mentally fit enough to play his best but he took to the court and he lost. Milos stepped up to the challenge. It's very simple.

It's not his height that is keeping him from winning more, it's his constant injuries and his mental game. It's nauseating to watch IMO.
Not sure what he can do to stay healthy.
Should he go gluten-free like Djokovic to avoid injuries? :p. His serve is under pressure constantly. It adds up overtime and affects him mentally. So the height definitely plays it's part. That is a reason why guys around 6 and 6'1 are multi-slam winners and injury-free.

Come on, this guy is injured every other week it seems and he has the mental fortitude of an ant.

Tone down your Raonic praise. He outplayed Fed for 2 sets today. I don't think anyone is denying that.

Federer was doubtful to play Brisbane because he had fever upon landing there .He did not want the tournament to fail and put the organizers into trouble. He did them a favor playing there. One would be foolish to count that win.

Even Milos acknowledged today that the Fed of today is not the Fed of past.

Tennisaddict give me a break. If Raonic beat Djokovic today, you would have written 20 pages worth of praise for Raonic! Your double standards are sickening. We finally have a younger player who stepped up at a slam and beat a Big Four player. This isn't like that journeyman Querrey beating Djokovic as that was likely a one time thing. Raonic is a hard working player who tries everything to improve his game unlike that complete embarrassment Dimitrov for example.

The Fed of the past is gone. Raonic beat the Fed in front of him today and a few months ago in Brisbane (Roger took to the court thus he was fit to play.) Raonic has the type of game which can trouble this older Federer. I don't think these last two results for Raonic were anomalies.

Don't you want younger players to step up or do you just want them to step up against everybody but Federer? Be fair.

well, if Fed of the past is gone, and he is, then it can't be said Raonic beat a Big 4.

Big 4 was over years ago.

Let him beat Djokovic and Murray in the same slam and I start buying.

Fed got outplayed in set 1 and 5. True story.

But based on how the matches went, Fed had no business winning against Cilic and no business losing to Raonic today. Raonic was on his way out literally before the 2 DF's. Federer was literally toying with him for sets 3 and 4. Anyways, let us hope that this win spurs Raonic to achieve greater things and not be like Ferrer and Berdych.

Come on. Federer is the GRASS GOAT. But ok fair enough, let's see if Raonic will be able to beat Murray and Djokovic in slams in the future. Those are the players he really needs to focus on. By the way, Raonic has defeated Federer three times, once in 2014 and twice in 2016.

OK, so even if Federer did win today in 4 sets,,,,what do you think his chances would have been against Murray that is very hot right now ??? Not good, that is what I say.

Exactly. That's all I want. I can't stand useless players who don't step up to beat the very best players on the biggest stages. Federer may be older and declined but he's still the GRASS GOAT and Milos beat him in his backyard. That's a step in the right direction. Believe me if Raonic beat Djokovic today you would be thrilled as I would be too.

Fed has absolutely ZERO margin to spare now. ZERO. That bp in the fourth was virtual mp. In the past he could let chances slip away because he had simply so much game he could make his own chances again at will. Not anymore.

Quite good is what I say. Great actually.
No, you are thinking about the match last year in the semis, right ? Only problem is Murray is playing about 20 % better than last year, and Federer is coming off injury and is playing 10 % worse than he did last year. Add those two up and what do you think ?

As I said once before, Federer would have had the mental edge, and having the mental edge often trumps having the physical edge. And have you already forgotten the Tsonga match?

It's pretty simple. When Cilic loses to Federer, the fans were dumb to doubt his abilities and all that. When Raonic wins, Fed is back to being Old-erer again. Actually not very different from how it goes with Fedole matches. Every late Fed win over Djokovic counts but none of the Djokovic wins count. And by the way, Fed used to have these letdown games even in his prime. It's almost as if he needs to go on a walkabout for a while to recharge. It's just that he can't bounce back and play a level of tennis clearly above his rivals to negate that. I mean, he sort of still can, as he did against Cilic, but not all the time and Raonic was not going to be as generous as Cilic.

Checking in. Couldn't be more annoyed by those people claiming Fed didn't choke it away. He was so close to winning it and then out of nowhere these 2 DFs. He's so mentally fragile, probably wanted to win it so badly that he couldn't think straight anymore. No, I'm not going to console myself with his 17 slam titles. That's not how it works. Same for Fed, I'm pretty sure he feels sad about this loss.

Much respect to him for being so strong in the presser and saying he will still keep on playing for sure. I'd be so p'd off that I wouldn't even show up to the interview. It's so sad that he's declined so much mentally though. This has to be one of his worst chokes as of yet, and the past ones were very bad as well.

Many here always get defensive when it's said someone choked away a match. They take it as a dig against the player who won.

Man still super depressed. Usually shake off Wimbledon and USO losses within 2-3 days. This one was bad though:

1) he had it!
2) Djokovic was out
3) I was there

Aaaargh

But I do think the fact that he played ten sets in three days bodes well for the rest of the season. His confidence in his body will be up. Early reports suggest he didn't bust his knee in the fall.

Trying not to lose sight of the fact that he only returned to competitive tennis five weeks ago, after basically 6 months out. And if he could recover from 2013 and deliver his 2014 and 2015 performances at 33/34, no reason why he can't do so again at 35.

So here's hoping for a resurgence at Olympics, Cincy and USO, and subsequently at WTF....

I say BLASPHEMY !

According to Roger, it was an "inexplainable, really" kind of thing.

Roger thrones so much over the common mugs field that, what could appear for some as choking is in reality an "inexplicable, really" unknown phenomenon, evading all current scientific knowledge as we know it presently.

Really.

Lol...It reminds me of something similar Nadal once said after losing a match to Del Potro that he was poised to win (I think it was at 2009 Miami). He said something like "an amazing catastrophe happened where I suddenly couldn't return as well as I was doing". :D

For the top guys, the match is almost always about THEM whether they win or lose! ;)

Ok, so can Federer win another major ? is he too old and too injured ? the man himself said he won't play in ATP tour anymore if he feels like he can't compete with the best player and have chance to win another major.

So long as he can keep making semi-finals and almost winning them, he will feel he still has a chance. If and when he starts to get routinely knocked out in early rounds at the Slams, then that is the time he will almost certainly call it quits IMO.

what about injuries though ? Like Lendl, he was making quarters and semis in the majors when he retired. He had this back injury that made it so he couldn't train or practice effectively, so he said he was retiring. but I think Lendl's back injury is different than Federer's though. I think from what I had heard Lendl's back injury had more to do with Disc problem in his spine. but Federer's is more to do with muscle strain and spasms

Of course, everything will depend on how well his body holds up.

Damm, 8 major finals lost in a row it looks like. Pic will need updating. #RUNNER-UPERER

Kinda sucks. Especially the 6 Ls post 2013

2014 Wimbledon Final
2014 YEC Final
2015 Wimbledon Final
2015 US Open Final
2015 YEC Final
2017 Australian Open Final

Those 3 to djoker in 2015 are irritating, especially considering how he stunk up the joint 12 months later at those 3.

Roger hasn't timed it well these past few years. Heck Rio would have been nice, at least you get something for coming 2nd there.

I don't know how many Slam finals he has to make to bag #18 finally. It's his fourth opportunity. Ain't it getting too much? Murray got his Slam last year on fourth opportunity since comeback. Wish Federer the same luck.

I can remember where I was, either watching or finding out the result, for all the slam losses he has taken since Wimbledon 2012. Been a long road. One of the most disappointed I have been was pulling out of the Olympics, I felt 18 was never coming and thought a medal there would probably be his late career highlight. Seems 5 months later things didn't turn out so bad.

Yeah man. Fan of his through thick and thin. Those losses just made this victory so sweet. Past his prime entering so many slam semis and finals but falling short. You wonder if he would ever pull one out again. I always thought to myself that if he keeps on putting himself in the semis and finals that he will pull it off. Now to beat his biggest obstacle made it that much sweeter. I hope his body will hold up (all those 5 setters took a toll) and that he will continue to be smart about his schedule for a successful season. His mind seems to be rejuvenated after the layoff. It will be a great year in tennis.

How can you be depressed after the dubai loss? He just won the aus open!

Because I want more for Roger, specifically #19 at Wimbledon. He really needs to be top 4 by then to make his path easier. Dubai would have been 500 points towards that lofty goal. I want him to play beautiful and competitive tennis all season, not just in January.
