so if Shap does get through qualifying he's the first name I'll be looking for in the draw..place will go insane if he gets Rafa or Fed

Disgraceful to give a shameful drug cheat a wild card and deny one of the few rising stars of the game one. The only saving grace is Shap will get through qualifying and play anyway, while Sharp will likely go out in the first 3 rounds given her form this year (and without the huge PED advantage she benefitted so richly from throughout her career).

man, his qualifying matches may be the biggest in the history of qualifying now! :)

Win-win for US Open. People will talk about the "controversy" of giving her a WC when other big tournaments did not, and she will bring in the fans. Although I did expect her to play better this year. But I guess at the same time she hasn't even been playing that many matches. Hard to get back to a high level of play.

Shame for Denis though.

This is true. Smart business move on USO's part. Sh*tty of them not to give El Shapo a WC though.

The organisers give WCs to whomever they desire.

With that said I am certain that everyone will receive what he deserves sooner or later.

Shopo will probably manage to reach the main draw and Ms. Dopingapova, well, the tournament director of the Stuttgart tournament can confirm how it went with that investment.

Sharapova getting any wildcards will always irk me. Drug banned players should get no favours, people like Gatlin and Sharapova might be big names for their sport and big draws but it will always annoy me that the world is run by money and not by actual morals.

I agree with you 100%, it's irritating as a fan, but if I was in charge of the USO I'd make the same decision to let her in.

Don't care about pova, but are you freakin kidding me? Dumbass USTA giving some American mug a last chance instead of letting this kid in? Pathetic.

Shameful, you have to think letting Shapovalov is a good thing. He's a young star on the rise and I guarantee you some Canadian fans will make the trip to see him. Easily more would've paid to see Shapovalov than Patrick Kypson...WHO IS PATRICK KYPSON?!!?

Not surprising that the USO decides to grant the WC to Sharapova. It's pretty clear that the US has ceded any semblance of moral leadership in the world for quite some time now. It's all about money, money, money in America.

so Blancaneaux, and A. de Minaur are more worthy than Shap :eek:

guess these deals were worked out before Montreal...
Maybe, but those are WC given by mutual agreement with the USTA and Tennis Australia and the FFT.
I'd kick out one of those young American mugs to put Shaps there.

At least Wimbledon should for appreciated for not going for this reciprocal arrangement. And seeing this why can't Italy, Spain, Canada, and China go for some reciprocal arrangement?

Setting Denis aside, what's so wrong with giving Sharapova wildcards? She was banned based on strict liability (caused by negligence ostensibly), not any claim of intention to cheat, so it's not like she's morally reprehensible because of it..

A lot of people believe that she was simply ahead of the game, basically that she was cheating for all these years with a substance that hadn't been discovered or added to the list yet but that she knew it gave her an advantage. So legally no it was not cheating as it was not an officially banned substance, but morally yes because she knew what the substance did and was using it because it was not "discovered" and officially "banned". I personally give her the benefit of the doubt, but I also understand the few players who believe she knew what she was doing for all these years and the advantage that substance gave her. It's not as simple as it seems.

USO direct entry list is confirmed 6 weeks before the event. Thus, Denis's ranking did not make the cut.

That's stupid. So people playing the hardcourt events leading to the USO that are even called the "USO Series" don't see their results reflected and rewarded for the USO. lol This is even worse than Wimbledon changing the seedings and not basing them on rankings.

Shap may be correctly placed by the rules (timing of the choices), but after seeing Eubanks and Shap over the last week, the decision turned out to be very wrong.

I don't give a hoot about Sharapova, never did. Most likely she will be gone in early rounds.

the USTA is not going to refuse a promising American for anybody regarding a wildcard, unless theres a scenario where a former champion or big name didn't get in.

She probably used it to gain an advantage, yes, but they all do everything they legally can to gain advantages anyway, so she's not different from most other athletes in that sense.

The guy deliberately hit an umpire, he should have been banned for a year.

The woman was a drugs cheat.

The woman should not be given wild cards.

The woman should be mocked mercilessly, despite her flawless figure.

The man should be in - he's ranked inside the world's top 70 for heaven's sake.

The man is a rising star of the game, and just what the sport needs, rather than crusty old veterans.

The man should be praised solemnly, despite his Canadian heritage.

Moral cheating? You mean like Federer playing, even though he knows that he is more talented than anyone else alive? He should get consecutive lifetime bans for that.

USTA desperation to promote their young players is beyond pathetic. They must be so jealous of the likes of Zverev and Shapovalov. But that will not work, they must find other ways to convince young people to choose tennis over other more popular sports. If not they will have to wait long years before they have a mens singles slam champion.
