Who will be ATP YE#1 in 2017?

Straight up fight between Fedal. Federer does far better than Nadal in this part of the season usually, but will his fitness play a role this time? It will be even more difficult if Nadal manages to win the USO. Fed has announced that he intends to play a full schedule- so 2 more Masters, Basel, and the WTF.

For Nadal, i think this is the last chance and great opportunity to grab WTF. This trophy is missing from his gallery since very long. Also keep in mind that for the masters, I think Nadal always played in deep level. So, overall I think Nadal is having great chance to finish YE#1

If Rafa wins USO, Fed will have to SIGNIFICANTLY outperform Rafa at the remaining events. If he won Basel and both Masters, and Rafa earned Zero points post USO, Fed will still only be +540 on Rafa going into WTF.

Fed has had a great year but I don't see an indoor sweep coming. Similarly, Nadal will reach a few QFs at the very least.

Now obviously, Nadal losing today or Sunday makes it pretty much a deadheat.

All hinges on the match tonight and the Final. If PCB, Del Potro or Anderson win the US Open then it's very open.

Thats actually true. Havent thought of that. Didnt he beat Fed there too, 2013? Murray and Novak out he probably has the biggest chance of his lifetime.

Frankly skipping the whole clay season shouldn't be rewarded with a year end no.1.
What if Nadal fails to win the US Open. 2 Slams to 1 for Federer so still Nadal would be the more legit no 1?

Just a theory of coruse because there is no way you can have an easier draw for a Slam and Nadal isn't gonna waste such an opportunity.

So much Novak lost that day !!

He should smack RaoMug for those botched MP

After withdrawing from the Paris semis and then losing in the WTF semis, Raonic seems to have played quite a significant role in who ended up as #1 last year!

But he can't mess up anything for Roger or Rafa as he won't be playing it this year and, strangely, neither will Novak or Andy!

Wait a second-- all Nadal fans have said since 2005 that the WTF is an "exhibition," and "utterly worthless." So according to 99.9% of Nadal fans, Rafa winning this worthless "exo" will be just that: worthless.

Can't have it both ways, can you?:rolleyes:

Rafa's in a strong position to be number 1 for quite a while, if he wins the US Open.

There's no way that Roger is going to defend the 4,000+ points he won up to the the clay court season, and Nadal ''only'' has something like 2,300 points to defend, and may even gain on that.

He could be 2,000-4,000 points clear of Federer before the 2018 clay court season begins, so wouldn't even need to repeat his clay feats of this year.

If Novak and/or Andy are rejuvenated after their break, they still wouldn't have enough time or points to challenge for number 1 until, at least, Wimbledon.

The only other possible contender would be Zverev, if he gains some momentum and strong results in early 2018. Other than that, Rafa (barring injury) should hold the number 1 spot for at least 9-10 months - should he win this US Open.

Rafa at his peak was perfectly capable of beating anyone on HC, but his 2010 and 2013 USO titles came with cupcake draws, except for Nole in the final.
The less said about his hilarious 2017 USO draw, the better.
I believe in the philosophy that you can only beat whoever is in front of you, but you can't subscribe to that thinking for Rafa's USO draws and then complain about Fed's 2017 Wimbledon draw. At least Fed had to beat 2 former Wimbledon finalists in a row before beating a former USO champion in the final.

Well I guess that depends if you think Murray was a legit #1 over Djokovic last year or not. I personally did. Of course he did win the WTF too which Nadal is probably unlikely to do (plus the Olympic gold).
