Wilson Ultra Tour (Monfils)

I've been playing with the Ultra Tour the last few weeks. I had it in my bag as a demo from my Wilson rep, but when the strings on all my RF97's broke i ended up playomg with it once and then the next day played in my club tournament with it (got to the finals with it only to lose 12-10 in the third set super-tiebreak!) . Really great frame! Surprised me as it's NOT at all what I would call a racquet with specs that match what I like... and really the first 18x20 frame I liked. So far the only modification is changing the grip to a leather one. Just haven't had a chance for anything else but I plan to change the buttcap to the more squared off Pro Staff one, add maybe 8-10g of weight in the handle, and maybe experiment with a bit of weight at 3 & 9. I have it strung with Luxilon Gut in mains at 57# and Luxilon Alu Power Feel at 54# in crosses.

Overall a very pleasant surprise!
If you have the ear of anyone at Wilson responsible for the paint (as distinct from design) can you convey that many customers are dissapointed by the poor quality which shows in chipping within the first few hours of play. How are yours holding up in that respect?
Otherwise yeah, beautiful feeling and playing racquet. Return of serve is possibly my favourite shot with this fame, so solid and plush.

I'm a bit out of the Wilson world / loop nowadays, but if I happen to connect with someone I shall mention it. Mine is chipped.... but all my racquets are chipped. Plenty of doubles, serve and volleying in singles, and I like to scramble and dig for every ball so none of my racquets stand a chance of staying pristine from day 1.

Funny you should say that - I had my best day ever returning playing some singles the other day - thought I was just seeing the ball well but maybe there was a bit of Ultra-influence there too!

That's an issue with alot of the new wilsons. Even my Lime Green Blade 98L has the black velvet paint chipped and wearing through

Thank you!! Very pumped to hit with the Ultra this weekend.

Love that Wilson rackets can start mains at the bottom and tie off at the top... I have pretty loose standards for stringing my own racquets b/c I don't mind and speed > exactness for me.

(But I never compromise when stringing other's racquets. Just feel like I need to put that disclaimer in b/c I'll get eaten alive here)

I know what you mean! I use the UT myself and use all over poly. I have however, been stringing two piece to avoid around the world technique, as i have never tried it and am not comfortable wasting string if i fail :p I will say that if Wilson say stringing bottom to top is fine then i am fine with it and will propably go one piece and do that from now on. Even though all good stringers always advise against it ;)

Purchased still another Ultra Tour - just to look at it without stringing! I treat it as a piece of art; it so nice looking!:D

I feel like that about many of my frames... I told my wife that I see them as pieces of art... and she said that even though she doesn't see them in that way, she can understand where I'm coming from... then she said... Just HOW MANY pieces of art do YOU NEED to have...? and... Maybe before getting a new piece of art, do you think you could sell one or a few of the old ones...? :D:D:D

I recommend hybriding a poly with multi, syngut or gut at a low tension and 1.25 or thinner gauge.

Agree. This frame stock is too light to string with full bed of poly.

IMO As a rule, never go full poly with a frame under 300g unless you are under 20 and have an elbow of steel.

Just traded for an Ultra Tour! The poly it came with isn't working super well in the frame, any recommendations?
Here’s what I have tried so far. All played great.

Cyclone 1.25/RS Lyon 1.25
Tour bite 1.25/RS Lyon 1.25
Hyper G 1.25/RS Lyon 1.25
V-Star 1.25/RS Lyon 1.25

Best tension 47-49# for mains. Crosses at 45-47#.

Same poly at lower tension :) 18g at like 48-50 works well.

I also did natural gut / poly - 52/49 - not as much spin but uber smooth stringbed feel and placement.

Anyone tried both the UT and Pure Aero VS?
Yes. As far as feel goes the VS has a stiffer and almost brassy feel to it. The VS is more 'spin friendly' with excellent control from the 16x20 pattern. VS has a higher twist weight as well I think, so it is more stable in stock form.

Thanks!

How far of to the UT would you say it is with control? How does the power level and plow thru of the two compare in stock form?

:)

Demoing the UT rigt now and ive added weight to 12 & (separately) 3 & 9. In either location it feels like it lags behind when i swing it and i feel like it kinda twists when I hit the ball. Anyone notice the same? and how should i customize the racket?

Im a mainly doubles player who hits a very flat and penetrating ball. Relies mostly on kick & slice serves to set up the point and finish at the net. Do you think this racket is a good fit for my game? Below is an ex of my game (4.5). I'm using the kblade and in grey w/ blue shorts. The kblade had a lot of weight on 3 & 9 and lagged a lot on groundies so I couldnt hit groundies too well.

UT reigns supreme in terms of control but on a scale from UT (most) to PA (least) I would place the VS closer to the UT. In stock form the VS has more plow and power than UT but not by a huge margin.

Keep your current lead set up and try adding weight at the butt cap to counter-balance.

i think 3 g at 12. i was trying to find posts on what other ppl do but was rlly hard to find haha. I'll try moving it to 3/9 & 12, counter-balance then let you guys know!. I'll order a scale too

You can also use tungsten tape. The TW one is three pre-measured strips of 3g each (total 9g)... put those under the grip (onto the pallet) in the amount you need...

Recently done this to a frame that had no trap door, cut even strips around 6 grams to the handle, just kept it away from the strings plane sides of the pallet

I find the UT to be pretty stable and only added 2-3g at 12. Then swapped the grip for a leather one and added an overgrip and putty under the trapdoor. That’s all I did.

Same here. Settled in 3gr@12 + leather grip. Wilson did the putty part for me with their great qc (309gr unstrung) Total specs with og and dmpnr 354gr, 31,3cm 331 sw (RS Lyon 1,25 @21kgr)

So got a demo from TW. I put lead on 12 & handle but when I hit the ball, it feels like it sinks into the racket but it warps like crazy. A lot of shots flew long on the forehand and it had a strange trajectory and trampoline feel off the racket. Tw strung it with Yonex atg 850 and I usually prefer polys but would switching it to a poly make that much of a diff. I rlly was not impressed by this play test

Yes, it makes a big difference. I've never used at 850 so I can't say exactly how much of a difference. I use Cyclone 18L at 45 and there is no trampoline effect at all. I also don't have weight at 12. With that setup and what you are experiencing, I would take the weight off at 12 and try putting some at 3 and 9. If that doesn't work, try it with no weight on the hoop at all. Both of my UT's are 330g, 8 points head light, have plenty of power and are very stable. Just out of curiosity, did you try it before you added weight to the hoop of the demo?

I have not but it feels too light and hollow even with the lead tape

I’ve only played mine with poly so can’t offer any insight on multis. With poly it plays great.

Where in HB are ya? A bud of mine used to own a house there until he sold it and moved to Europe. I've been to Woodys for breakfast and then to HBHS for tennis many times.

Follow STW's directions. I have difficulty playing with a stick that doesn't have poly and isn't weighted to my liking. I am also of the opinion that if you can make a stick that most pros actually use work for you, you are probably doing something right.

You need lead on the sides of the loop and on the V throat for more consistent stringbed.

I'm right by Marina High School (hence my name when I joined back a few yrs)

what do you mean "stick that most pros actually use" they use this? I have actually been leaning toward the Angell TC 97 16x19, 11.7oz., 10pts HL at 27.5in, 66RA. I figured I'm not too good at customizing rackets so I'll get something thats a bit cheaper, foam-filled, and i can do a little bit of tinkering

The Ultra Tour is sposed to be the same mould as the H19. Many of the pros out there use a version of the H19, or a similar stick.
