I think a lot of guys are trying to replicate it but they don't succeed. Its such a unique and unorthodox shot but you still see so many kids copying it with horrible results

The nadal bolo/lasso/buggy whip from baseline is a useful shot to have if you don’t want to be pushed back. Taking it extremely early off the bounce with a half volley type move and shifting your weight over with a knee raise for balance [open stance]
I’d never use it for offensive shots though. It’s purely a last resort pick up when the thing is at my shoelaces on the baseline.

In general its a defense shot and of course it can be pretty useful. It is not useful if you try to hit every forehand like that that is what i meant after all i have seen many pros using that shot .

It’s a difficult transition to the pro level, the things juniors are able to pulverize their national opponents with have to be retooled.
Many, most infact, won’t make the transition.

kinda agree on Djoker for the reasons given in this thread when it comes to strokes/technique.
But I also think that pretty much any player trying to enter the goat-race in the future will have to model his game after fedrs from a gampelan/strategy point of view;
economy of motion (also in regard of longevity), killer 1st and 2nd serve, variety. can't see anybody dominating for a long period of time without these attributes.

Rafa was a little late to that party. By the turn of the century already guys like Safin & Hewitt were following in Agassi's footsteps and pushing out the serve & volleyers like Sampras & Rafter. S&V was on life support by the time Rafa broke out in 2005. Just a few stragglers like Henman were still hanging on.
It's not like Rafa invented the passing shot. god knows players like Lendl, Borg and Connors were exposing S&V players before Rafa was even born. It just wasn't until Rafa's prime that the changes in tech & surfaces made S&V not even worth trying any more.
