Is it me or did Fed’s strokes just not look smooth last night?

I’m talking that even when he had time, especially his forehand. Not the usual patented Fed grounded, head dead still, smooth flowing through the ball graceful stroke. Seemed short, quick, abbreviated, coarse, labored. Like he’s hitting at the ball vs. swinging through the ball. Just didn’t feel like the graceful Fed stroke I’m used to.

Federer was finding the tape or hitting 10 ft outaide from opponent baseline on weak second serves

I think he partied too much the previous night

His backhand never looked too smooth, but yes, his forehand(the smoothest I've seen) was not at its best last night.

Perhaps he is fatigued from making the finals at IW and flying straight to Miami? Thiem for sure was, considering he lost in the first round despite winning IW.

I've caught glimpses of yesterday's match, seems like he lacked pop on his ground strokes just like @IW. He also looked a bit tired. I don't think the conditions really favor him in Miami, it's humid and usually super slow. In all honesty, I thought he was going to lose yesterday.

I'm a Fed fan but I have to say his strokes looked absolutely horrible yesterday. He can only break the serve of a guy from Moldova 2 times? He can't say it's the different conditions after 20+ years on the tour. We know it is the conditions, the string tensions, and such but you're RF. You should work these things out easily. It's easy for me to say as a fan though. We all know its age more than anything. Never good to see the GOAT on the decline.

Anyone watching that match could see Roger was in sixth gear the first set, still indifferent in the second, but then got into it (midly) in the third set. Just enough to win. I don't expect him to do much here and I think his mind is on Europe and getting back home.

It's indeed painful to see, but unfortunately no one wins over father time, even Federer!
I'm not sure Fed poor BP conversion is entirely due to him being older or the conditions, I mean this decade, it's always been a bit of a problem for him. He's great at giving himself break points, but when it's time to break, he basically tries to grind/wait for his opponent to gift him the break, it's like he suddenly forgets what made him so successful, so frustrating! But then again, we're not the one that's on court so it's easy to criticize from our point of view.

What really concerns me lately as a RF fan is his lack of fire power. It sort of reminds me of the way he was playing in 2013, his strokes lacked power to really hurt the opposition and he was vulnerable. It was very obvious during the IW final that he couldn't hurt Thiem from the back of the court, which is why he went to the net more/drop shots but that didn't work. With the heavier conditions in Miami, I think this will expose his lack of power even more, which is why I would be surprised to see him make a deep run. It's weird to see Federer getting bullied from the back of the court like that, I often watch old matches and back in his prime, he had so much fire power with the PS90 which was nowhere near as forgiving or powerful as the RF97.

Agree with OP. Once every two or three games, he ran to meet the ball with Fed footwork dominated the point where Albot didn’t have a chance. Looked he did that just to prove to everyone he’s still Fed when necessary. But mostly he was pushing.

He never does that well in Miami. Yes, 3 titles, but many strange losses. If he makes the QF's I'll be impressed. At any rate, he won't win here unless all his opponents get run over by a bus before they take the court.
I'm checking the newspapers for the Florida Man headlines should that happen

Slow surface and high bounce. Humidity.

I think he looked more disinterested and it just manifested in a ton of errors. So me tally was kind of checked out but still able to hit the important shots to eek it out.

Old bones and a repeated back injuries. Muscle fibers not as fast as they used to be. Lack of power as a result. Happens to them all.

Looked a lot like mid-late 2018. He didn't have the confidence to step in and rip it. It was a lot of abbreviated take-backs, resulting in him just pushing his strokes over the net.

I wouldn't be surprised to see another Cincinnati situation.

Winning by holding serve and winning tiebreaks. Throw in a retirement and boom: in the final and losing to Novak

Pretty much this. He pointed towards the surface with anger after a 100th miss hit in the third.

Couldn’t blow Albot (who had 3 matches on these new court after qualies and R1) off the court except for last couple of games.

The maestro level should improve significantly in the next game after a couple of hours matching on this new slow mollasse court.

I doubt that will happen here in all honesty. The Cincy court favours his serve and FH. The Miami one doesn't.

While I agree that he can't do much about old bones/mileage on his body at this stage, I'm not so sure his back problems result in him losing power. Back in 2003 he already had back problems when he won Wimbledon, still had power then and it's been an on/off thing for most of his career. The biggest decline most players face when they reach 30 is the decline in movement/explosiveness, as a result court coverage isn't as good. You look at past greats, in most cases they still had fire power. Agassi at 35/36 was still slugging it from the baseline, heck you look at players like Nadal or even Wawrinka who are well into their 30's now, power wise they are still the same IMO. I know this is generally frown upon by the tennis community, but when I look at Federer, I think he could use a bit more muscle mass, if he was to add a 10lbs of muscle to his frame, he could probably get some power back.

We’re all saying the same thing I think. Obvious that Fed was well out of things last night. Showed some real grit to get through. I’d rather he wasn’t bothering with Miami actually but...it’s another match won.
