Novak's race to Federer's amazing 310 weeks started with Wimbledon 2019... Will he get this one at this time next year?

Novak today, 2019.07.15, has 260 weeks as a no1 player, and Roger holds the record with 310 weeks.
Novak is no1 player currently and his number increases each week for some time now.
He needs to be no1 on the ATP list till 2020.07.06. when he could be record holder with 311 weeks.
Next year Wimbledon finishes 2020.07.12, this year points will be erased day after that, so points players got in this year's edition will be counted in this race.
In other words, Novak's race started with 2000 points and an advantage over the competition.

This thread will follow Novak's path to second most important record in sports, week at no1 place, and will be updated when every important tournament is finished. I will pick few players that, in my opinion, have the best chance to spoil his party or are interesting to follow, and if new one emerges will include him too.

Race list:
Novak Djokovic 2360
Rafael Nadal 1720
Daniil Medvedev 1690

Roger Federer 1290
Kei Nishikori 380
Alexander Zverev 200
Félix Auger-Aliassime 190
Dominic Thiem 190
Stefanos Tsitsipas 20

Tournaments: Wimbledon, Canada, Cincinnati, USO...

Off course, I am aware of the possibility that some player take no1 spot in next 12 months and Novak gets 311 record later, but that is not the point of the thread...

Let's see what will happen....

I think the only thing stopping him from breaking that record in 2020 is an early injury that keeps him out of slams. And even if he doesn't have it after next year's Wimbledon even if he plays fulltime, he'll be so close that he'll get it soon after. Nobody is close to him right now and he will hold at least the points from one slam title for another year. So he only needs decent results for most of the next 52 weeks to maintain it.

If he secures this record in Federer's and Nadal's era, that will be a massive achievement. I doubt others will catch it easily because it takes massive amount of time. It's GOAT achievement by itself already.

So basically Djokovic can lose in R1 Wimbledon 2020 (also losing #1) and he still surpasses Federers record after the tournament with 312 weeks?

He is a lock to get past 310 and set the bar way higher, especially if he opts to play some ATP 500's post-USO.
He's playing Tokyo this year instead of the Laver Cup

I think it's more as preparation for the Olympics, but any points he can win will be very helpful

I think it's 311 and not 312...
311th week is on 6th of July when this W points count, and 312th week is 13th of July, day after W 2020 final so this year's points will be replaced with new ones.

But, I think 311 or 312 doesn't make big difference ;)

He doesn't have to win anything else, just get deep runs. He will have around 17.000 ATP points to potentionally win till Wimbledon. He just needs half of it.

Inevitable since well before this Wimbledon.

Nothing is inevitable but death... Although its quite possible to happen now with start advantage in this race to 311. I think race to year end no1 will be crucial... Novak has only slight advantage in that race over Nadal and Fed...

I don't know, I was always totally sure he will get this one, even in 2016-2018 hard times I believed he will come back, and that with his unprecedented consistency it will happen eventually...

That list of names and accompanying scores is absolutely depressing.

Let's hope so. But one tournament at a time.
Novak, while playing well in GS, has underperformed in masters this year. He needs to pick up masters points if he wants some insurance for his No. 1 ranking.

I agree nothing is guaranteed. As he was flying before, then he lost to Sam querry, so things can change fast and be unexpected at times! Yeah it would be nice to see Novak be more consistent again in masters and play better, but ultimately he’s peaking when it matters for the slams!

I'd say he has a higher than 50% chance of doing it. He probably has to win one of the next two slams to be absolutely sure though - so that he holds at least two slams up to entering next year's Wimbledon.

I must say, Thiem, Tsitsipas and Zverev are really breathing down Djokovic's neck in this race to 2020 Wimbledon. Not sure if he can hold them off.

The half of me that's not a Rafa fan would like to see him do it. He'll have some "free" weeks to work with that he's earned, and from there, he has to play better than everyone else. Easy? Well, it's easier said than done, as things can turn around in a hurry, in either direction.

If I had to take a guess, I think he'll do it, as he's the best all-around player. And along the way, he should notch his 6th YE#1.

The fact so many were previously calling Zverev to be the one who could prevent Djokovic from getting the record, shows how far he has fallen in a relatively short time.

The good news for him is this could help him do really well in or maybe even win a slam. Nobody expects anything from him now, while before he couldnt seem to handle the pressure on him at slams.

I think its foolish to count your eggs before they hatch especially when we've seen Djokovic lose his edge overnight in the past. You really have to take it one event at a time with him imo.
Novak is one of most consistent players in history of the game... If not most consistent... Everyone can fall of but if you can choose one not to fall that would be him...

Anyway, this thread will be little game, hopefully interesting as more tournaments in this one year cycle are played...

Lol, Djok has a poor run of form for 18 months and the tennis world never forgets, Fed goes for a five-year period without a Slam ('12-'17) and it's glossed over.

Hypocrisy at its finest.

Let's remember he hasn't played any 500 events yet this year to buffer his ranking unlike Fedal, if he wants the record, he'll get it even if that means plugging away at 500's. That'll be a huge help just to keep his lead out of reach.

You forgot January.

Maybe I didn't explain myself, but Djokovic doesn't need just to be Number 1 in July of next year, ne needs to keep the No. 1 all this weeks. For example if Roger or Rafa are number 1 a couple of weeks in february, he needs to be No. 1 a little longer. There are a lot of things, still give Nole like 70% chances to break the record.

Federer was still a top 5 player in every one of those years. Nor did he have a sudden rapid run of poor performances despite not winning slams. Mentioning Federer's name here is foolish.

Incorrect, he fell outside the top 5, are you forgetting his 2nd round loss to Stakhovsky in R2 of Wimby 2013? Please, do your research before calling me foolish, Fed apologist.

Fed not winning a Slam for 5 years vs. Nole not winning a Slam for 2 years.

There are the facts, hard to digest for you, easy to read for me, they are what they are.

Djokovic well and truly deserves this one .

He has been the dominant since 2011. He should have really had this in the bag already . He is late , really late

Novak is mathematically guaranteed for 267 weeks. I think this puts him at #1 until September 2nd. He could lose it at the end of the USO if Nadal or Federer go on epic runs and he does absolutely nothing.

From there he just has to outperform Nadal and Federer for the remainder of the year. Fed would likely NEED to win the US Open, which he hasn't done since 2008, and Nadal rarely plays the schedule after the USO. Nole is in a good position to get the number 1 by this time next year. If he doesn't get it with this current stint of number 1, he will likely only need 40 or so weeks for the remainder of his career.

Seems likely to get it

What's crazy is Djokovic can pass Federer for weeks and year end number 1's DURING Federer's career - it's not like 20 yrs later or even a Federer/Sampras situation where the guy retires and someone comes along to break the records. Federer is still active and in contention at slams, as we saw this past Wimbledon.

Djokovic might have already done it if Murray didn't vulture tournaments and wild cards into Vienna to gain points to put himself in a postion where 1 match decided year end number 1. Good on him for winning the match, but if Nole won that match, he'd likely already have the weeks at number 1, and he'd be going for his 7th year end this year.

How many weeks at number 1 did Murray snag?

Are you kidding me?

Djokovic 6725, qualified
Nadal 6225, qualified
Federer 5060 and he'll get there too

Thiem 3315
Tsitsipas 2995
Zverev 1590

Yeah, they are breathing. Sorry stupid joke but whatever :-D
