Getting sick of Microsoft Windows

Seems every damn week I get a new must have download and my computer has several new bugs . Few months later ...it’s fixed but new download has several new bugs

Every damn time I turn my computer on it’s a new download that takes 45 min and new bugs
How can most of the world take such incompetence and madness

Running the old XP must suck big time! Just get a new computer. Cost are almost nothing and get a SSD drive too! Windows 10 is pretty solid OS! Everybody use it! Fortune 100, DOD and R&D firms too. Apole Mac is good for graphic intense applications and music!

That's why you need the Mac OS.

If dgold is over 40, not too tech savvy and never use Mac OS before, it would be a tough giant learning curve to change from Windows to Mac OS.

If dgold never use Mac OS before, I would recommend just move to Windows 10.

Windows "updates" are big UX issue tbh

I assume some of them are important for security reasons

But they definitely happen too darn often

if they could make some of the stuff happen behind the scenes, it'd be good

ideally no more than 6 updates a year

mac os has less updates than windows (usually about 4 "expected" updates a year (1 big, 3 smaller ones), and then maybe about 3-4 additional security updates that happen sporadically depending on when issues happen)

also i dont think they force you to update the computer apart from the security ones

Mac OS isn't perfect either. Although you may not face some breakages unless you do a lot of "power user" stuff.
e.g. long back there was some break in the (now i don't even remember what it is called) MTA ? postfix thing. If you were sending mails using sendmail from your own programs you would have faced this issue. So many utilities like mpack broke. There were dozens of blogs explaining how to fix it, but it worked for a few but not for all. My problem never went away. I have not done a clean install, always an upgrade.

The recent upgrade once again has broken something so that whenever I load a program on the command line I get a long list of locale related errors on ther terminal. Everyone seems to be having this.

Then a year back wget and othre such programs suddenly broke with some certification error. Many of my scripts broke. I recntly found a solution and fixed it.

But I guess if you only work with GUI programs you won't know.

Never used Mac OS. Once heard that Mac OS has less virus issues.
Not sure if it's because the Mac OS is more secure or if virus writers are mainly targeting Windows.

Linux for everything except video games

Only reason to update windows is if you need something specific. I just keep updates turned off and if something comes up I download what I need manually. There's nothing more annoying than windows updates and 90% of files are useless for the user. Windows' own built in security can't protect form viruses efficiently anyway so I just turn it off along with dozens of other services. Only thing worth leaving on automatic update is dedicated AV program and even that is annoying.

It's it only me who never have problems with new windows updates? All of my software are working fine. Computer loads fast as always.

Both. Mac uses Unix BSD kernel which is perhaps better in that respect.

If you are mainly using the computer for web browsing and only have light word processing and spreadsheet needs, I highly recommend getting a Google Chromebook. It boots up in 6 seconds, has a 12 hour battery life and you can get a decent laptop for around $300. Virus protection is built in and about once a month, it will ask you to restart the computer for an update. The update usually takes 30 seconds, you log back in and that is all for the month.

You need a Google account to log in. The whole computer just runs the Chrome web browser. Use Google Docs and Google Sheets online for word processing and spreadsheets. If you have more complicated needs then you can download MS Word app for free and pay for downloading the MS Excel app. You can connect to the Android store and get many other apps.

SSD, decent processor and at least 8GB of RAM + Win 10 is pretty rock solid. I work in IT. I know what I'm talking about.

1. You should always update your computer, security and performance.
2. If you don’t do any hard work on a computer and use it mainly for email, web browsing, social media, etc. get an iPad.
3. If a tablet is not your style and you want a computer experience, get a Chrome Book.

Mac OS is incredibly user-friendly, and Macs are way less susceptible to viruses. I am confident you can make the switch!

Must be new. Mine has not updated for 2 years. Moto G4. Says it is up-to-date.

Mine is Moto G6, which I believe is just a year or two newer than G4. Three updates in last three weeks. Another notification to update yesterday.
Why would the newer models suddenly start to update far more frequently? Actually, the updates should likely apply to both the G4 and G6, as the OS is still very similar.

Mostly the latter, although when Microsoft merged their consumer OS with their professional OS they were a little sloppy and left quite a few holes that have since been closed up. At this point Windows is about as secure as any other OS, but due to its prevalence in large commercial enterprises it is still heavily targeted. Although the popular targets for malware these days are mobile devices (especially web browsers) and cloud services.

Windows needs more updates due to the vast collection of peripherals it supports and due to the security risk of being widely used in consumer homes.

I liked my old XP software
This W 10 is going to give me a stroke

Windows XP was a very good OS. I work with music programs and creative programs, and XP was very stable and cooperative.

I firmly believe every new OS is designed to make your computer last shorter. Money, money, money.

For work, I have an iPhone which I have not upgraded for 5 years, and it still works 100% perfectly.

I have had so much trouble with my private iPhones that I went back to the trusty ol' Nokia 3 years ago and haven't looked back :)

Mac OS does get viruses, but yes they mainly target Windows because that's what people use. Not everyone can afford overpriced hardware.

As for Windows updates (depending on the version) you can delay the feature updates (Currently 19H1) up to a year. I believe it's once a month they release updates on a Tuesday (Patch Tuesday). This is typically a cumulative update (CU). If you miss the one in July then the one in August will have the July stuff and whatever in August. It's best to set your machine to automatic updates. You can schedule it to perform the updates at a certain time, say 2am, so when you wake it's ready to go.

I suggest never upgrade to the latest release of anything right away. Too many issues can happen as a result of that. Always wait a bit, look at bug reports and determine if it's worth the upgrade. Sometimes waiting a month or two is better than being the first and getting all the bugs that make your life harder.
