Can Medvedev actually win the title now?

Maybe I'm wrong but I have a feeling that after USO Med will have a drop in form for a while. Now it is the moment when he is in great form for a few tournaments in a row, something we have never seen from young players until now. (Zverev was close during the 2018 clay season but his RG performance kinda ruined it). Also, he got lots of luck with both Djokovic and Federer losing one round before facing him. I don't see any excuses not to beat Dimitrov, so he might very well reach the final. And there he will be the clear favorite against anyone but Nadal. And even if Nadal makes the final (which is far from a given) I doubt it is going to be a repeat of Montreal. What do you think, can he actually bring his best now and become the first young player to do something really significant?

he is on one leg now.
unless Nadal is completely tired out or injured, Medvedev will have little chance vs Nadal.

If Diego finally beats Nadal, then it might happen that Diego won't have enough motivation for the final. Though Diego is a very experienced player.

Dimitrov will probably lose after defeating Federer.

The worst I felt was a sense of mild disappointment since I thought he had a chance with the draw opening up,but if he is as injured as people say then he wasn't winning it anyway.
And yeah, hard to care about losses after Wimbledon.

Yes, he has a shot, but so many of these matches, especially from the R of 16 on, come down to health. Medvedev has a lot of game, especially on hard court. When healthy, he is hard to beat from the baseline, as he has consistent strokes, a huge hitting radius, and can really move. If his serve is on, he is a handful for anyone.

He has a great chance! I think meddy will beat Dimi and make final! He’s the 2nd favourite after Rafa!

I hope it’s a Nadal v meddy final! Will be a good one!

i am actually quite impressed with his sudden injection of pace in rallies......his court craft and clear thinking, he is a refreshing player to watch that’s for sure.......

His defence-to-attack patterns in 5+ shot rallies has been steadily improving. If his body holds up, I think he's more than capable of beating anyone, eventually.

It might be too soon for him to beat Nadal, especially given his current state of readiness. I definitely think he's the favorite against everyone else, though, and I think Nadal could be defeated before the final. If he manages to pull it off, he leapfrogs Roger for #3 in the 2019 YE1 race.

players that out of a sudden defeat the big 4 too often lose the next match.
more often than not.

look at recent examples:
Rublev defeating Fed losing to Med
Wawrinka defeating Novak losing to Med who was playing on 1 foot
Medvedev in Monte Carlo defeated Novak and lost to Lajovic next match
RBA in Miami defeated Novak and lost next match to Isner
Kohlschreiber in IW defeated Novak and lost next match to Monfils

I'm sure if you look back, you will find a lot of such examples.

So there is nothing lost in translation. ;)

THe way Nadal is playing, Mad Lad will be favored against Rafa. Montreal was different.
But Mad Lad is not 100% - so we have no idea.

Medvedev is a strange beast: a pusher with a monster serve and one of the best tennis IQ’s in recent memory.

Really, Medvedev is like a Murray but with a much bigger serve and greater testicular fortitude.

Back on topic though, I think Medvedev can win it because he gets a lot of free points on serve, and he’s got enough skill to “win ugly” if he is actually physically hobbled or depleted.

I’m familiar with the concept of an arguable emotional letdown.

If Diego makes it to the final and loses whatever the reason for his loss it most certainly will not have anything to do with a lack of motivation.

yes, the emotional letdown would hit him in 1/2 final.
so agree with you, if he makes it to the final, it might be a different story.

No, Dimitrov believes now and will take care of Medvedev relatively easy...his right shoulder seems to hold up for now (even though his serves and ground strokes are like 10 mph slower)...

let's see what will happen on the court.
given Dimitrov results post his London win, even a 1 leg Medvedev might be too much for him after defeating Federer.
in case of doubt, ask Wawrinka.

How in the world is Medvedev the favorite against Nadal if they both reach the final?

At Toronto, Medvedev was playing far better than Nadal in the lead-up to the final yet got crushed.

What exactly has changed from their previous matchup?

So far Nadal is playing better here than he did in Montreal. Far from his best, but let's face it: he will never be back to his best on hardcourt.

so how this is supposed to favor Medvedev?
he was fatigued already before the US Open start.
the match with Wawrinka was played on 1 leg.

What shall happen to make Medvedev favorite against Nadal in a theoretical final in 4 days from now?

I just think matchup-wise, Nadal beats Danii again.
Although I do think that hes not the type of young player to go out there scared. He will make it tougher than Canada for sure, but I think its too soon for him to have Nadals style figured out ( if its him ).
Other than that, yes he can beat the rest.
