Fed withdraws from ATP CUP ..

As far as I know, women should not be expecting at 42, not good for their health..
Generally speaking yes, but it is not a universal rule. As a form of precaution it is better to try it sooner for health reasons. But a 42 years old woman that, for whatever reason has not been able to have a kid before, can still have a perfectly healthy offspring aged 42.

How long can this geriatric make a mockery of the ATP, appearing when he wants and taking advantage of tired players that have to play full seasons. Some day the ATP have to put the foot down and say he isn't welcome any more at the 2076 Halle/Basel open.

Good decision I say ..

PS: ATP CUP is the the first event in the new season. Not the ATP Finals, which is the final event. People are confusing them with each other.

LOL. No wonder Wawrinka dumped this too.:sneaky: If Stan then decides to play well then there is a feud.

LOL he is just saying Laver Cup is far more important and lucrative to him.
And he cut Stan out by not paying him enough for Laver Cup in Switzerland no less and then Stan of course won't play ATP Cup with Fed, and now the event has neither.

Haha very true, but why do they care whether he retires or not?

Think of it this way - if Nadal retires now, Fed fans especially those who don't like him much and are threatened by him, they will have a blast. At the end of the day, it's all about goathood.

Your hate is so blinding it’s pathetic. It’s obvious fedr plays this long because he enjoys the sport, not for records and cash. He intends to play as long as he still enjoys the sport and good health. Plain and simple enough to understand but perhaps too complex for you to fathom.

Perhaps it's both. He enjoys the sport but he also likes to maintain his record if possible and nothing's wrong with that. It's a competition after all.

did you watch the Wimbledon final? he was about to outlast Djokovic in a 5-setter at nearly 38 years of age.

im wondering who is blind here.

I never said he is blind to the ambition to succeed. If he was blind to that, yes he should retire. It’s just not everything to him.

Thanks for the insult though. Keep up the charm.

If he plays because he enjoys it he should join the Seniors Tour.

To preserve the precious Nadal h2h? Who won their last meeting and 6 of the last 7? Who had to retire in IW for fear of going “senior” with another injury that disappeared a month later.

You truly are laughable!
Nothing wrong with the Seniors tour if you are only playing for enjoyment. Fed will have a complete set of trophies.

wat? :censored: go, reread your own posts, pathetic fanboy!
Like I said, keep up your charm campaign!

I have watched more tennis before fedr arrived on the scene in 1999 than since then. I’ll be watching it long after he retires, whenever he loses his enthusiasm for the competition.

Calling me a tennis fan, not a “pathetic fanboy” only assures any other viewer of this dialogue as what you are...a hater that’s going to be pounding on his hater drum and subjecting him/herself to continued self-embarrassment.(n)(n)

wouldnt that make it even worse though? if this were just him playing as individual sure, i think this gives a chance for other countries to qualify. I think it would be far more worse and ridiculous if he were to withdraw at the last minute. Also also this team event and ATP finals are not remotely even teh same thing. normally i fiind your comments sound, but this makes absolutely no sense.

I don't see how this is bs excuse anymore than injury. I think the difference is here he is flying from china to AO (you can criticize him for his exho tour sure) but him wanting to spend an extra few weeks with his family isnt a bad thing. i do feel bad for the fans though
Hang on, why's he going from China to Australia? Isn't the ATP Cup going to be the first event of the season?

Edit: oh wow he's playing an exhibition in China worth no points and before the tour actually starts? But i'm meant to believe he needs "family time" to skip out on an event that is:
1: held in the same country as the slam he'd be going for
2: offers actual points
3: is a perfect warm up with similar conditions and heat

I tell you what's not a good warm up. Some exho in China.

And he doesn't have to withdraw the week of the event but at least wait til the 2019 season is done before you withdraw from 2020 events. It just looks strange and judging by some comments here, i'm not alone in feeling that.

You seem quite riled up and I don't understand why. Players change their schedules every year.

He committed to a tournament and no longer wants to play it, so he's cancelling. I'm not sure why doing it closer to the event would be better, especially as his decision impacts several other players in this case.
Not that riled up, just think this is a terrible look from someone who usually has such a good PR team with good decision making.

Can't think of the last time Federer or Nadal or Djokovic withdrew from an event the following year (that they'd committed too) before the previous years calendar was actually finished... look at the people confused thinking he's withdrawn from the ATP Finals because there's still an event to play this year but he's already dropping out on 2020 tournaments!

Players change their schedule yes, but they don't usually change it after tickets have gone and sale, country draws have been released and the player had committed to that event.

It would've looked better doing it closer to the event cause his family excuse would actually have made sense then. Now he's looking a tad hypocritical that he's ok to play some exho in China but can't play a tournament in the same country as the slam he'll be going for..

I see your point, OTOH, the opposite can be easily reasoned (see post below, one of mines in the Fedr News Thread, there are more in that thread). It's a lose/lose for Fedr, so he picked one. His choice, no?

Hard to say if it's right or wrong bc we don't know what his thought process was. Maybe he's thinking the 5-yr China-exo contract is safer (in both scenarios of retired/no-retired) bc if he is retired during the next 5-yr, he can still play it (not the case with ATP Cup). Or maybe he thinks the time between China-exo and AO gives him more schedule flexibility (it does, no doubt!, bc he gets ~22-days of flex time). He's not going to explain his every thought about every decision to us bc the media can, and likely will, represent it in a bad light (see this withdrawal announcement).

Of course it's his choice, I just think he should've waited til the 2019 tennis year was done to announce it. If he was withdrawing from the exho as well as the ATP Cup then i'd understand him saying he wants family time but its just a bad look for him to say he needs family time but then go to an exhibition in a completely different country to where the first slam of the season is. This is all coming from one of his big fans by the way so this isn't sour grapes.

Just for the record, federo is going on a 5 day long South Amrican tour of exhibition matches so I guess he's overbooked his important exho matches.

A bit annoyed. Paid extra to see "Switzerland" aka Federer compared to other matches. Might ring Tickatek tomorrow and suss out the refund policy. I've seen the Great Britain players before and without disrespecting them, I wouldn't have paid the premium just to see them play some random low-ranked country.
Hey, give us an update of their reply. I am interested to hear their reply, too. Cheers!

Tbh as a fan I'm shocked and not impressed with this decision if his at all, especially when he's going to fly all the way to China at the end of December for an exho. I was sure he would then come to Sydney for ATP Cup as his AO preparation. In his promo for ATP he said something about hes excited about playing for his country. I thought the exho was a 'why not' thing while hes in this part of the world.

That was a lot of hassle for me to try and get the best tickets. Now with ticketmaster's crap service I'm sure there will be more hassles to get the refund. However it's still a good thing he announced it now rather than later, at least it gives people time to cancel and reorganize their time. The more I think about it the more I feel he was never going to play. It might have been a favour for whatever reason. Or something happened in the past month or so that affected their relationship. I don't know.

nah, i get being critical of his exho tour, but again as i said , it is far better to withdraw when it affects other players and this is not just him playing for himself. i just dont get your" reasoning" at all.

I saw some fans asking for refunds on twitter lmao, as if Tennis Australia was somehow to be blamed for this. They should ask for a refund from Federer directly, I am sure he can afford it lol. :-D

I think him not playing the ATP cup is not the issue. But if he wasn't playing, he should not have committed to it. He made a deal with ATP that he would play the ATP Cup and in return ATP would give Laver Cup the official status and a calendar slot. It was reported by the Swiss press. Now it looks bad that he has suddenly decided against it after securing the official status for LC and this is not an injury related withdrawal. I can understand that fans who bought the expensive tickets just to see him would be slightly pissed. I don't think he has ever played in Sydney before.

I don’t think there is any option from ATP Cup other than a full refund, as the tickets people purchased are Switzerland vs another country. Since there is no more Switzerland in the tournament, effectively meaning those events have been canceled, a full refund must be available. I don’t think they can get away from this.

The Ticketing Company (Ticketmaster Australia) has already set up a web page which will allow ticket-holders for the scheduled Federer Matches to apply for a Full Refund.

Not sure if you are in Australia. Australia has both Federal and State Laws which oblige companies to compensate customers if they do not deliver a product or service that was promised - this usually means at least a Full Refund of the cost of the tickets. But it can also extend to extra compensation depending on the circumstances.

In all likelihood, anyone who purchased tickets for the scheduled Federer matches at the ATP Cup will get a Full Refund of their ticket purchases if they apply for it. However, those who made travel arrangements or accommodation bookings may lose some money unless they cancel those arrangements within a certain time frame. Ticket purchasers also have the option to purchase Ticket Insurance which covers them in the situation where an event is cancelled, or they cannot attend the event. And Travel Insurance can also compensate customers in situations like this as well.

I bought tickets to 2 sessions in Sydney

The first was a night session Switzerland v Britain, and the seats were $120 aud each

The second was a night session between Croatia vs Austria (likely to be Cilic/Thiem) playing the very next night. The seats were are in the same section and are almost identical, but these tickets were $60 each

They were selling tickets at literally double the price if Federer, Nadal or Djokovic is likely to be playing compared to the ‘normal’ sessions.

Needless to say i’ll be demanding a refund, since my ticket says ‘Switzerland’ and that country won’t even be in the tournament

That doesn't surprise me. If they sold tickets specifically for Switzerland matches rather than for the tournament as a whole then they have to give a refund if Switzerland aren't playing.

I finally got a response from Ticketek. They did not immediately offer a refund, instead have given me the option to keep my session and see what ever country qualifies, or change my ticket to any other session. They made no reference at all to the fact that the Switzerland tickets cost extra. I have now escalated the refund request further. Anyone else trying to get a refund?

He has mentioned family issues more than once lately. Mirka or kids or both? Im just surprised he is withdrawing this early. Must be something going on especially since he always played Hopman.

I wonder what these 'family reasons' are that make it impossible for him to play ATP Cup but not the AO which is also in January?

Is Mirka due to give birth again that week? ;)

She hasn't been seen that much lately, but wouldn't he let that particular kitty out of the burlap?

Okay.

First response from Ticketek was simply to remind me what the session was going ahead with another country. I still insisted on a refund.

After 3 days I got another response. They are now offering me free tickets to any other Sydney session as well as keeping my already paid for "Switzerland session". This would be great however I can't really attend other days without taking work off... Plus I am now in the paranoid pile where I suspect most big names are going to pull the plug.

I have now insisted again on a refund.

If you look beyond the Fed withdrawal, this highlights much deeper issues in the ATP. I get that the ATP wants to milk Fedal as much as they can while these guys are still around but those days are numbered, they need to find a strategy for the longer term. If the only way they can sell a tournament is with these 2 then I'm sorry but the tour will have a hard time surviving when these 2 are gone. As they say, don't lay all your eggs in the same basket...
