It hasn't been AS relevant as in the 80s, but it was still relevant enough that Malaysia wasn't winning it, but the top countries. With usually their best players.

I've had a quick look at the DC website.
The finals take place over one week. In fact it runs from the 18th - 24th Nov.
18 teams are split into 6 RR groups of 3 teams. Unless the format of an actual tie with a team has changed (2 reserve-singles, 1 doubles) this is where it gets interesting. With the old schedule a team could rely on just one star player in 2 singles matches and the doubles to win the tie and then rest up for the next round months down the line. However with this new format which must be completed in 1 week with the RR stage followed by QF, a SF then final. A star player could attempt to play 6 matches in the RR stage(3 for each tie), followed by 9 matches in the QF, SF, and final stages if the team gets that far. That's 15 matches in 1 week.
Surely each match can't be the normal BO3 or BO5. If so then the new format to it's credit will favour the countries with genuine strength and depth so making it more a team effort as one star player can be relied upon to win 3 matches each tie so more players will be required to play for each country.

Zverev is just much smarter than people give him credit. Wasting his energy on quasi-Davis Cup is a much dumber option...
Kudos to Federer for guiding Zverev to the right decision. Federer's motives may be money, but he did the right thing.

Quasi DC and DC. Not the same. Learn the difference.
In the previous format the team with home court advantage invariably enjoyed a huge advantage over the away team in terms of how home team supporters in the crowd massively outnumbered the away fans. In the past this has played a factor in the home team winning (DC final in Paris - prime Agassi & Sampras losing because the crowd heckling got to them as one example).
With this new format there is the host nation which is Spain in this case and all the other teams are effectively playing away so only their more die-hard fans will make the trip to Spain to watch them. The traditional DC home-team-away-team crowd factor doesn't exist now except for the host nation.

Yes, Zverev said he didn't wanted to play a tournament at the end of a season (which btw is different to an exho). But he also said very clearly he didn't want to play in this new Davis Cup 'cause he didn't see it as the Davis Cup at all. It was a matter of principles. He said that way before he was even scheduled to play the exho tour, and has remained consistent with his recent comments.
