I've had a quick look at the DC website.

The finals take place over one week. In fact it runs from the 18th - 24th Nov.

18 teams are split into 6 RR groups of 3 teams. Unless the format of an actual tie with a team has changed (2 reserve-singles, 1 doubles) this is where it gets interesting. With the old schedule a team could rely on just one star player in 2 singles matches and the doubles to win the tie and then rest up for the next round months down the line. However with this new format which must be completed in 1 week with the RR stage followed by QF, a SF then final. A star player could attempt to play 6 matches in the RR stage(3 for each tie), followed by 9 matches in the QF, SF, and final stages if the team gets that far. That's 15 matches in 1 week.

Surely each match can't be the normal BO3 or BO5. If so then the new format to it's credit will favour the countries with genuine strength and depth so making it more a team effort as one star player can be relied upon to win 3 matches each tie so more players will be required to play for each country.

I haven't heard a thing about DC.

Strange Tennis Channel sometimes just barely promotes events--Fed Cup finals seemed just like a late night side show. Not sure I heard anyting about DC from them.

DC was huge back in the days, not anymore. New format, shortened matches, best players unwilling to participate, it's been all downhill since the early 90's.

Here are reasons a few of top-10 players don't play in the Davis Cup final this week:

#1 Rafael Nadal - is playing
#2 Novak Djokovic - is playing
#3 Roger Federer - not playing, Switzerland did not qualify
#4 Dominic Thiem - not playing, Austria did not qualify
#5 Daniil Medvedev - not playing, withdrew due to being mentally tired
#6 Stefanos Tsitsipas - not playing, Greece did not qualify
#7 Alexander Zverev - not playing, prefers to earn millions by playing exhibition matches in South-America this week
#8 Matteo Berrettini - is playing
#9 Roberto Bautista Agut - is playing
#10 Gael Monfils - is playing

I've thrown a glance at quasi-Davis Cup and it is such a joke I had to switch it off after 5 minutes.

Zero atmosphere, empty stands. There is more excitement at a board meeting in Yuppieland Wall Street.

Zverev is just much smarter than people give him credit. Wasting his energy on quasi-Davis Cup is a much dumber option...

Kudos to Federer for guiding Zverev to the right decision. Federer's motives may be money, but he did the right thing.

Tell us again how you were just asking about how people watch DC.

I wonder why Zverev doesn't admit honestly that he wants to earn money. Instead of admitting he wants money, he said he wouldn't play in the Davis Cup final "because in November I do not want to play tennis anymore."

¤¤ Speaking about the event [the Davis Cup final in Madrid], 21-year-old Zverev has criticised the timing. Stating that he will not be playing.
Because in November I do not want to play tennis anymore. I think all the top guys will say the same thing.” Zverev told reporters in Shanghai on Wednesday.
“We have one-and-a-half months off in our season, and that’s the end of November and December. Making a tournament at the end of November, which is ten days long and playing and competing, it’s crazy. I mean, by the end of the year, we are all tired.” ¤¤ [Ubitennis 11/10/2018]

An athlete who lies about being greedy...

That is certainly a first.

Give the kid a break. The others get away with lots worse because they are better at manipulating the media.

I promise I will, but only if you tell me again where you find all these non-sequiuturs?

Is it THAT place again?

You need to shut that place down. It is over-producing at the moment.

You don't know what non sequitur means, if you thought that I am not following up on the previous time when I made the remark about your motives. They are still the same, and I am consistently marking them for what they are.

I am sure that in due time we will see what is the reason for that approach.

And then YOU blame ME that I'm always off-topic...

Must you always make it personal?

I repeat - for the 156th time: I am not your enemy. I am your friend.

Now, if you want to discuss my point, my actual post (the one about tennis) do it now, otherwise forever spend your days bent over above your favourite seat...

I didn't make any personal comments here. You did, so what are you talking about?

I already commented on your "tennis" post. Well, there is not much "tennis" to it, as it is mostly spitting on the DC.

EDIT: I just went to the USA-Canada thread, and LO and BEHOLD, you are also there, posting about the "quasi" DC. Literally, you are only talking about that.

Yes, I am sorry to disappoint you, I am actually discussing tennis on tennis threads and QDC on QDC threads. I am strange that way.

Quasi DC and DC. Not the same. Learn the difference.

These fans in the stadium didn't lose anything:

In the previous format the team with home court advantage invariably enjoyed a huge advantage over the away team in terms of how home team supporters in the crowd massively outnumbered the away fans. In the past this has played a factor in the home team winning (DC final in Paris - prime Agassi & Sampras losing because the crowd heckling got to them as one example).

With this new format there is the host nation which is Spain in this case and all the other teams are effectively playing away so only their more die-hard fans will make the trip to Spain to watch them. The traditional DC home-team-away-team crowd factor doesn't exist now except for the host nation.

I wonder why you're so selective when it comes to sharing content? Yes, Zverev said he didn't wanted to play a tournament at the end of a season (which btw is different to an exho). But he also said very clearly he didn't want to play in this new Davis Cup 'cause he didn't see it as the Davis Cup at all. It was a matter of principles. He said that way before he was even scheduled to play the exho tour, and has remained consistent with his recent comments.
