The 38-year-old had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee - which had been "bothering him for a little while" - in Switzerland on Wednesday.

Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion who won his only title at Roland Garros in 2009, said doctors were "very confident of a full recovery".

"After the procedure, the doctors confirmed it was the right thing to have done," he said.

In addition to the French Open, which takes place from 24 May-7 June, Federer will also miss the tournaments at Dubai, Indian Wells, Bogota and Miami.

"See you on the grass!" added the eight-time Wimbledon champion.

This turns Nadal into a heavy favorite for RG20, and would result in Fed’s last career match in RG being against Nadal.

Why is this guy still playing ?

This surgery will set him back at least 6 months, and there's no warranty he will return at his former level for the rest of the year.

He wants to comeback somewhere 1 month before turning 39 ?

I think he wants 1 last Wimbledon, and it is what he is still playing for. If it will happen or not is another matter. It could but I really think last year was his best chance. It probably won't, but I think he tries for it another 2 times or so, then thats it.

So he's skipping the clay season again. He'd never do that as far as grass/Wimbledon is concerned of course no matter what.

Honestly this was the last year there was probably even a slight chance of Federer reaching Nadal at RG (if they wound up in same half). Unless his ranking drops severely and he is drawn for him in a quarterfinal or round of 16.

Omg I just read that Fed was gonna miss the FO and now 30 minutes later I'm reading that he's gonna miss the FO AGAIN?

One might wonder if we'll ever see him at the FO again if he is to miss it in 2020 and 2021. : - (

He already said he is missing it in 2021?

I am guessing that means 2022 is his final year on tour maybe since I figure he will want to play all the slams in his farewell year. He just strikes me as that type.

I couldn’t stand Federer facing championship point(s) in Wimbledon again.

I mean I think if that happens and it is against Nadal or Thiem he would win.

Choking against Djokovic is mental, he has the big mental edge on Nadal for the first time ever lately, outside of clay. If anyone would choke it would be Nadal, I can't see Federer getting to that position in any final vs Nadal and losing at this point.

And Thiem in any finals would easily outchoke Federer even if Federer himself choked.

Fed could not bear to be at the FO when Nadal will surpass him (20 Slams + Olympics Singles Gold + Superior H2H) so he must have made up the knee surgery excuse.

I hope this is tongue in cheek

So sad. But another knee surgery was inevitable for Federer, with his physically taxing & defensive playing style.

He should take a page out of Nadal and his effortless playing style, not a single knee surgery in his entire career.

Should have just gotten a cortisone shot. Continuous surgeries on a torn meniscus will only reduce the cartilage more and more until it's bone on bone. The pain is excruciating and doing extreme cuts as in tennis is beyond unbearable. I predict this is the beginning of the end [emoji17]. Hope I'm wrong.

the sunshine double plus the entire clay season is going to be a Nadalovic battleground

not bad
Bro, do you still live in 2011-2014 almost a decade ago? We are in 2020. Thiem is also part of the clay battleground. And it will be a battle of Nadal against the rest, not "Nadalovic against the rest", because Novak is not the favorite on any clay tournament except maybe Madrid.

The fact that fed can still make French semis at age 37 3/4 after 3 years away on his weakest surface. And still be notch above anyone except novak/nadal was amazing.

It’s also a big mark on the the young gen of players who can’t raise their hands.

oh well. Guess he’s going all in Wimbledon this year. I doubt he wins. He could lose early at Wimbledon being rusty. Last year will haunt him. Heck 2018 will haunt him as well

IW and Miami tournament directors must be ecstatic, they only have to resurface the area behind the baseline this year. The money lost in Fed ticket sales will be made up in resurfacing savings!

Well, we can only hope for him to be fully healthy and back by the time the grass season starts.

I adore Federer and have so much respect for his accomplishments. It would be great to have him around for many more years but I don't see it. He will soon be 39 and this is his 2nd surgery. It's the sound of the inevitability of passing years.

Fedr's goal is to win Halle.

And Thiem. Maybe even Goffin (Goffin is better on clay than hard).

This type of injury and surgery coming at Federer's age isn't welcome news. Here's to hoping that he returns in good form, but I'm not sure that's likely at this point in his career.

I wonder if playing vs Djokovic made the injury worse.

Yeah he should have WD from that semi final. I admire him for not, but it was never a prudent or smart choice. He had no chance of winning, and the only possability was making an already existing injury on a worn body worse.
