Maria Sharapova retires from professional tennis

Think it's not a big loss for WTA as she isn't a big draw anymore but it's always sad to see any legends retire.
Wonder what her future plans are..

You had to respect her ability.

But she was using gamesmanship almost to the same level as The Mother.
But what people are really expecting ?

Those are child stars, who will never know what's to be an ordinary person and will live in a make believe world for the majority of their lives.

She won all 4 majors and is guaranteed a HOF place. She has her whole life ahead of her, a boatload of cash and still very pretty. Best wishes.

I love when these players retire, they try their hardest to write these poetic, eloquent pieces. In the end, they just sound sanctimonious and cringe worthy.

Many players over the years go out without much fanfare and that way is the best.

I have some great memories watching her playing back in the day, AO 2012 final vs Azarenka was a very nice match.

That said, she seems to be taking herself way too seriously and is anything but down to earth. Sometimes I wonder whether her motivation was really winning in tennis in the first place, or rather the money and fame that came with it. Not that there is anything wrong with the letter, as it still takes a lot of talent to win what she did.

One thing I must admit is that I find her much more attractive now, with that more mature look. She looks very, very good in the video interview posted earlier on this page.

Wishing her all the best in the future.

She knew what she was doing, hence that convenient, fact-free press conference.

No, she's not. She's just another in a long line of player who one had a name / certain skillset, but it faded. Just a few years ago, she used to enter a match thinking she could win (the majors), but that act and/or confidence could not hold up the internal issues that caught up to her.

All players are has beens once they’ve retired.

The tour goes on irrespective.

I hope you agree, THUNDERVOLLEY.

Since 2017, Sharapova is 1-16 vs. Serena... lone win in 2013 Doha.

Anyone who says Serena is breathing easily now that there's nobody to stop her from getting 24 might wanna take a step back and get drug tested.

One of Sharapova's best matches...and my favorite. A 17 year old, and 13th rank, Sharapova destroying a prime Serena Williams in straight sets to win Wimbledon. Would have won many more slams if not for all the injuries.

2004 was her best ever year against Serena. Not only did she beat her in the Wimbledon final but went on to beat her in the final of the WTA Tour Championships too. Back then it must have seemed that she was shaping up to become a real threat and rival to Serena.

In that moment I thought for sure she'd win Wimbledon again in the coming years, but it never panned out for her. She had a pretty unique career managing the career slam with just 5 slams. Like some others have said, I'll miss those legs most of all though :D

Don't forget Roland Garros 2018 when Serena was so scared of the clay queen Sharapova that she gave her W/O.

just heard Wilbon on PTI say she had a better career than the Belgians....all she had over Henin was the career slam, and Henin did have two finals there...mainstream sports media is so dense about tennis much of the time

No way is she greater than Henin.

Can we dispense of the myth-building about Maria beating a "peak" or "prime" Serena in 2004?
Serena was not in peak form coming into 2004; not winning a single slam that year and was coming off of a knee injury the year prior. While Serena as seeded 1 at Wimbledon, she was ranked 10th; and later that year dropped out of the Top Ten. Maria has never beaten "peak" Serena.

Sharapova had a very good career; and I wish her all the best in retirement.

What about slam distribution, an argument Cow fans like so much.

I don't think winning the career slam trumps being an all-round more dominant figure though. For instance, I wouldn't rank Agassi ahead of Connors or Lendl, despite that they all have 8 slams and he's the only one with a career slam.

Henin's dominance and 2 extra slams more than makes up for her lack of Wimbledon, IMHO.

It doesn't make much sense as a Djokovic fan to criticize slam distribution since that is his argument over Nadal. You just want someone, anyone to have more slams than Federer. Btw, Cow is a stupid name. Have a nice day...

That's not your original claim. Agreed that overall Henin is greater, but Sharapova is at least greater in one way (slam distribution), so you were wrong.

Honestly I'm just happy whenever they actually do mention tennis. I don't expect any of them to know what they're talking about.

Sad but not surprised to see her retire.

Had a fantastic career, unfortunately will be overshadowed by the doping scandal but she still helped boost women's tennis all over the world. Took the torch from Kournikova and highlighted interest for millions of people around the world.

Won 5 slams including the career grand slam, an Olympic silver medal, 2004 YEC, 36 career titles, was number 1 for 21 weeks and the Fed Cup.

Will always be known for stunning Serena at Wimbledon in 2004 and again at the YEC that year. Perhaps will be more known for the fact she never beat Serena ever again. The two did have an epic verbal rivalry with some iconic quotes however.

Not surprising but an unfortunate loss for the WTA as Maria is still a top draw.

She was still a top draw, but she lost 7 of her last 8 matches on tour and it didn't look like she was going to get a lot better, so was still quite limited as a draw. She will be missed though.

Fourth greatest WTA player in the XXI century so far behind the Williamses and Henin - not bad. Just makes the ATG cut due to CGS and longevity (11 years between first and last YEC qualification).

She had a memorable grudge match against Wozniacki at the AO last year. Probably one of her last good wins. Sharapova was bashing the ball like a possessed demon and had way too much firepower for Wozniacki.

Her matches with Azarenka were totally unwatchable due to the constant banshee wailing. A shame as both were good players. Otherwise I’ve always had plenty of time for Sharapova’s aggreessive brand of tennis.
