Exactly. The whole point of cancelling events is to slow down the spread. It will have to happen at some point (see Italy) so the earlier you get to grips the more chance you have of giving your health service a chance. The incubation period is a lot longer than flu so there's loads of chance of picking it up and giving it to someone who is vulnerable long before you have any symptoms yourself. So Born_to_slice's comment above is the danger that will kill people.

The US has had/been using influenza vaccine since WWII. Despite its wide spread use, the US sees 25-50,000 deaths/year (Sorry for such gross numbers, but the CDC is a ’Gubmint entity and that’s as close as they can guess...these are the same geniuses you can’t wait to watch on the news at 6pm). Have some perspective.

Do you worry about dying from the flu on an annual basis? According to the numbers, you should (if you’re worried about this 19 thing). 80% of people who contract Coronavirus will not even know it. Go watch tennis, it’ll be fine.

The reason so many people die from the flu in the US is in large part due to the general poor health, poor education, and poor healthcare system the US has. Trying to say don’t worry because you don’t worry about the flu is self-serving, ableist, and also doesn’t see the larger picture...

There are many, many elderly and at-risk people living in Indian Wells and the general Palm Springs area.

The United States has a lower rate of death from the common strains of flu than

The United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Japan, South Korea, Portugal

Just to name a few places

last time I checked 19 dead from the virus there, 300 tested positive. That’s a much higher death rate than even China.

A doctor turned up at work with a sniffle and saw 70 patients before he was diagnosed with corona virus.

I don't know whether one person would justify cancelling a sporting match, but I'm not inclined to attend one at the moment.

But that's largely because it first hit at a nursing home
And with a limited number of tests and bandwidth to perform them, only those with severe cases are even being tested. It is likely that many that have it and/or have minor symptoms are not being tested and as a result, not being included in the positive test tally. Including them would dramatically lower the death rate.

Slow it down by all means, but we're all going to get it.
Some worse than others.

It's a hypocondriac's nightmare/paradise.
