God forbid that nice gestures are made public.

Be nice behind closed doors you

He obviously has no obligations so anything is better than nothing but he does have billions and I assume these are tax deductible. He'll probably donate tens of millions more.

"He's EEEEEEVILLLLLLLLLL!!!!" said all the people who can not see into his heart and are also not giving a million dollars.

How much have other athletes/celebrities donated?

Guardiola donated 1 million € to Catalan medical services, lots of footballers buy equipment for hospitals (C.Ronaldo) or food for food banks (A. Robertson). Some offer their rental properties or hotel chains for quarantine purposes (W.Zaha, G.Neville). Not too hard to find, actually...

A great gesture, but I do wonder why these people choose to announce it to the world. Just do it anonymously.

Ideally, you should give anonymously, but I think the calculus for public figures is a little different than for the rest of us. If Federer gives anonymously, people will assume he didn't give and wonder why somebody in his position isn't being charitable with his wealth. The cynical view -- appropriate in many cases, sure -- is that wealthy individuals announce their contributions for PR-related reasons, but I think there is at least some justification for making their contributions publicly known. I'm also aware that disclosing donations to avoid accusations of not giving is also -- technically -- a PR-related reason, but it's reasonable and fair to want to avoid unwarranted criticism.

I also do think contributions from high-profile individuals galvanize other high-profile individuals to do likewise. Again, some cynicism about their motivations is warranted, but we can all agree giving something is better than giving nothing.

Of course, there's a separate discussion to be had about how much Roger (and other rich folks) should be paying in taxes, but this isn't the appropriate forum for that discussion.

The negativity on this thread from some posters is appalling to say the least. Federer is not obligated to donate 1 million CHF! And yet he has done and it will help the vulnerable Swiss families going through the COVID-19 pandemic. Every help counts. Instead of appreciating his generous gesture, you criticizing it says a lot about you as a person.

For a future billionaire it is 0.1% of his value. 0.22% of his reported net worth

dude, as you know percentages, you're probably smart enough to understand that net worth is not equal to cash.
so the calculation is pointless.

do you want to share how much did you donate out of your networth?
did you do at least something to help people in need? or are you simply salty because someone else does?

why don't you show with your personal example what is generous?
perhaps Roger will learn something and top his effort?
I am not attacking Roger for giving a million. This is good from him. I am saying it is so easy for him that there is nothing to applaude.
He is showing consciousness. He would be generous if he gave an amount that makes a difference for him. What he did is comparable to an average worker who gives 1 dollar to a homeless person. Good but easy to do and nothing special.

Your entire net worth is 1000-2000 bucks? You might want to get a job.
Which world are you living in ? A lot of people would kill for 1000 bucks. There was already no job to get and Coronavirus only makes it 10 times worse. "go get a job" LOL

Many small companies are gonna close and many people will be homeless because the economy is just DOWN, people have to stay at home in some countries just like mine you know?

When I read stuff like this I understand why most people have such a bad opinion about the tennis world. Go to hell man.
