I've been meaning to bump this thread for quite some time now as I really like the premise and the discussion and wished to see more submissions, but with a full year passed and with the very recent addition of the dramatic 92-minute third set between Djokovic and Nadal in their French Open semifinal, I wonder what TT's thoughts are now. There were already some excellent mentions here but maybe there's more I'm missing? For example, Fedal played an excellent third set in their Wimbledon 2006 final.
Also, after checking out more and more matches over the lockdown, here's an approximation of my list:
First Set: Federer-Nadal Wimbledon 2007 final, hon. mention Sampras-Agassi US Open 2001 QF
Second Set: Safin-Agassi AO 2004 SF (I have to include at least one of the first three sets from this match here), hon. mention Nadal-Verdasco AO 2009 SF as well as a few others
Third Set: Nadal-Djokovic Wimbledon 2018 SF for the sheer drama as well as having respectable quality throughout, hon. mentions to 2006 Fedal Wimbledon final and 2011 US Open final
Fourth Set: There are way, way too many to choose from but I'll go with the classic Federer-Nadal Wimbledon 2008 final here,
@metsman listed all of the honorable mentions pretty much lol
Fifth Set: Safin-Federer AO 2005 SF. Hon. mentions to Wawrinka-Djokovic AO 2013 4R, Fedal Wimbledon 2008 F, and Djokovic-Nadal RG 2013 SF,
and Thiem-Zverev US Open 2020 final
Some really tough competition out there tbh
