Why does Nadal Bite His Trophies?

What's up with Rafa biting his trophies. I can see biting a metal trophy as someone might bite a coin to see if it's real, but then he bit the cystal ATP masters trophy.

What's up with that Rafa?

It's just a thing he does to set him apart. why not? its kinda, i donno, i dont wanna say cool, but yah in the unique kinda way. everyone else does the same old:
wait for it...wait for it
HOISTED (fans screaming)
brings it down tot kiss it then....
HOISTED.

its kinda repetitive.

Yeah, he did say once (if I recall).

I seem to recall him saying that at one of his first titles (I wanna say it was an MS) that he just really wanted to bite it, because it was... I dunno, a weird thing for him. And since, it's just become his signature thing.

Pirate backgournd!

It comes from Nadal's pirate background: Anytime pirates get their hands on something that could be valuable, they bite it to determine if it's real and discard it if it ain't.

It's almost an instinctual thing now and written into Nadal's DNA.

The distance between a great victory and a terrible defeat is one step, and often only a short one at that. A fact of reality is that in a fallen world we can be riding high on the cloud of some great spiritual success, and the very next moment find ourselves in the valley of spiritual failure and despair. Rafa understands that both the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, bites.

These are the kind of ******** threads we have to endure. Face it! Nadal has 9 MS titles at 20y 11 months. Federer had ZERO at the same age. Nadal is 100x the player Fed ever was.

It was an honest question. Don't get your panties in a twist.

If you don't like the thead, don't read it or respond to it.

Don't be a dick, not everybody uses that, or this place wouldn't even exist.

Its a simple question, really. I'm just laughing at how everytime some new or interesting topic pops up on MTF, someone has come over here and post the same thing trying to look original or something. To the OP, I really am curious why he's now posting the exact same thread on a different forum. Its not like he'll find any new information on the matter, so what's his motive? To look cool and original on an online forum? It's funny when you think about it.

Biting a trophy makes more sense than kissing the trophy. The latter, to my mind, signifies..."god, that was lucky" whereas biting means "gothcha!" which indicates that it was Nadal himself who won it, no luck involved.

Well it's possible people go to and from both the sites... I check MTF too and often see similar posts, however I never read a thread about Nadal biting trophies - although it is a question that has occured to me. I guess it's just his trademark or something. We are all fans of tennis so it's likely we discuss the same things at the same time here and at MTF but it's no big deal.

What the heck are you talking about?

I had a simple question. I posted it. I've seen many people win a trophy. Not too many people bite them.

What is MTF? I only posted a single thread on this topic.

What's you motive in criticizing my post - to look original and sophisticated?

Has it every occurred to you that many people would have the same question? Maybe that's why it's posted here and whatever MTF is.

Are you kidding me? Pirate? Did you just call Nadal a pirate? NEVER DO THAT AGAIN. Pirates don't wear capri pants and neon colored tops. Pirates don't play tennis. Pirates eat beef jerky and scare little children. Maddox would kill you.

I think he wants to establish something like a 'finishing' move or a celebration ritual so that others can copy and remember him forever

...or he's just addicted to trophies and he wants to taste them

MTF is a website called 'Magnificant Trophy Facts', it's very popular - most people here are frequent visitors - and the subject of Nadals biting has been covered endlessly.

little children = Federer? Bahahahaha!

Nadal should star in a new spinoff film called Pirates of the Mediterranean

Nadal bites his trophies for the same reason that he:

1) picks his butt
2) arranges and re-arranges his water bottles
3) performs fist pumps that look rehearsed

HE'S WEIRD!!!!

To prove to himself that it is real - it is a symbol similar to pinching oneself or cutting glass with a diamond - a symbol of humbleness.

Oh give me a break. The thread at MTF was posted at 12:00am Monday, the first thread I've EVER seen on Nadal and trophy biting, and you expect me to believe that you randomly posted the exact same thread over here 7 hours later? Covering it up only makes you look more suspicious.

Anyway, this is getting a bit over-blown. Its a silly discussion and lets just leave it where its at.

Yes.

It's a big world out there and people tend to ask similar questions. That's why there are things like stickies and FAQ's and EVEN duplicate posts that require merging two threads.

So give me a break. Not everyone goes to this MTF site.

Yep, and the photographers now ask him to do it.

Right on. He bit it once, and then he said in an interview after winning another title, something along the lines of: "I held the trophy the and the photographers said 'bite....bite'" so he did. And now it's his trademark.

this seems IMO the most realistic opinion

It is a primal gesture

In the heat of sub-Saharan savannah, the bull lion drives off all rivals to claim his mate, then gives her a little nibble on the nape, reminding her what a stud he is

the champion savors the prize, also applies to. . .trophy wives
