I get what @user92626 is saying. To state it like a mathematical theorem: for each non-pusher belonging to the set of rec tennis players, there exists a pusher in the same set who is better than him.

Right? (j/k)

Sorry to tell you mate ... you are now in charge of telling the rest of us wtf userxxxxx is talking about. Good luck. 8-B (y)

I have very rarely ever encountered a textbook pusher.

I've only encountered it twice. It's rare in men since we are inherently risk takers. My wife has played lots of pushers in ladies singles.
I do think pushing is rare and should be, as is pure ball bashing. They exist but most people play pretty normal tennis with a varying mix of risk and defense.

No... not that ... please no!! That was strictly a one time thing - an isolated moment of inspiration - like the great drop shot I hit a few weeks ago and impressed my buddy, but I could never do it again!

Assessing your opponents shot tolerance is a big part of it. Last match I played the guy had good shots but no patience. All I had to do was feed him a variety of junk for > 4 balls and he d hit the fence. Later on he steadied hit 10 ball rallies. I made sure I won those too then he went back to bashing.

Smart guy tho. At the end of the match I did my usual face saving. Pointed out a couple of points where I got lucky and said he had shot of the night. He just grunted you re good on his way to the chair.

Most aggressive baselines I take down just think they had an off night. Which is what I want them to think...muah haw haw

OK ... but we have to get somebody. Maybe every new member has to do a month. Talk about a cruel right of passage. We will give all new members the warning to not stare directly at userxxxxx's posts.

I don't get it. If you could win either way -- be your opponent tolerant of 4 or 10 shots, why did you even bother to assess his tolerance? You were capable of both sides.

Gentlemen, let's just go back and focus on the topic at hand.

Remember my offered strategy next time you're out there: DON'T LET them get to your balls with ease.

I think you shouldnt break it down so much. "Placement not power", which can mean any of those. Probably depth/spin is the main rally ball one, and when an opportunity arises either an angle or pace to seal the deal
In saying this, my current goto tactic with new balls is to bash it up the middle, slightly crosscourt, and focus on hitting on the rise, until I get a short one. And then drill this one down the line

I'll make a few errors at first as I'm adjusting to getting the rhythm right on the rise. The dtl shots dont feel like they're being hit harder, it's just more timing based and since my general rally ball is pretty fast (hittingthe back fence off one bounce insidethe court as an indicator) - its fast enough.

Maybe that is another thing... dont hit a ball harder than you need to, why risk it if you can win with less risk? Hitting the back fence on one bounce is fast enough. If you're not hitting winners when you're standing inside the baseline with that power, then your opponent is reading you and you need to change up your targets. I.e.if I'm hitting short balls dtl and my opponent is fast and returning them, time to start hitting those cc.

This is sort of "the undercurrent stratergy", because there will be points flying everywhere due to unforced errors and the opponents stratergy etc. And the undercurrent stratergy will change depending on your ability and your opponents ability to counter it

My stratergy will change a lot too, bashing it down the middle on the rise is good when my opponent gives a topspin ball - not so good when they slice half the time or lots of random junk, because that stratergy - while a beautiful clean one - requires some rhythm. In the case of junk ballers, it might be better to just lag up the fh to the max and hit super deep topspin balls with lots of margin as the standard rally ball. Same with older balls that don't give you pace. A dtl winner could be an easily returned shot if the balls are slow because not only is my shot slower, but the pace I have to work with off my opponent is slower too.

Playing with new balls really shuts down the pusher imo

Against tall players with huge reach, it might be better to wrong foot them with short angles as they struggle to change direction well, etc

To do that what do you suggest I focus on more?
depth
angle
pace
spin
Use all at your disposal to achieve that objective that I said.

Focus more on any one that you feel is your weakness and prop it up to par with the rest.

Ask yourself, how do you lose to a pusher or any opponent for that matter? It's always because they make you feel very uncomfortable. Sometimes the discomfort becomes too much, some of us even scream, curse, etc.

I don't think you can say that ^^ without seeing curious' playing or his match.

If you all focus on depth and spin and not sufficient power, your ball may still be sitting duck waiting to be slaughtered.

I have seen him play, and if he hits a deep spinny ball the opponents he plays against will not slaughter it

Trying to make the opponent uncomfortable. Interesting point actually. I watched this video to see what's happening at the top level.
And I can see during these rallies, the shots have a degree of 'forcing' and that seems to depend on the player. Some take more risk, some less, some are more aggressive than others. You will see lots of shots which are just neutral though. It's probably a personality, self confidence thing as well. Interesting stuff.

I have had a few throw their racket, either into the net or the back fence. I don't know if that is due to me beating them by hacking or I just wind people up.

Imagine how productive we'd be if we used a weasel instead of a mouse on the computer.

The problem is you would take it everywhere. For example ... in our tennis bag. I can see teaching it to attack balls (double ball entendre) ... but don't see it bringing them to you.

One thing is for sure ... being called a f***ing weasel has lost it's sting.

I played today. Got to the court and jumped right into a match with 3 other guys who had played some sets before. No warm-up for me at all. My partner and one other guy were hard hitters.

And as usual my game was adversely influenced when I'm with better players, as if I try to be like them!!! Or I couldn't calibrate... I completely broke down. Luckily my partner carried the team and won the TB.

Wish I ran into pushers. More hitting, more running.

If he had the consistency I would have to play a more aggressive game. Junk is easy for me so if I know 4 junkballs on average win the point that s my lowest risk strategy.

And assessing shot tolerance should be part of feeling out opponent in warmup. You haven't read the works of Saint Brad. If we have 2 extended rallies in warm up and he net dumps good info. Then every neutral ball I will hit flat or slice shots see how that

In replying to another thread, it just dawned on me that pushers are just disciplined players who follow the same winning principle as any good players. That is, if they get their hand on the ball relatively comfortably they'll make their opponent pay sooner or later. Is that not the same as Nadal's, Federer's playing?

So rule #1, It don't matter whether you hit hard or soft, from the baseline or closing in, paint the line or the middle, simply DON'T LET them get to your ball with ease.

Right?
The simple strategy against pusher is to have footwork, and move and don't get lazy. I shared a vid hopefully to shed some light on how to beat pusher, they are not that scary.
