PCB is not NexGen and hasn't shown any legitimate signs of being able to win a GS, let alone a Masters title till now (2017 USO field and draws were crappy) so if he were the one to win a fully open and achievable GS, it would be a little ironic for our NexGen friends.

Hard to know because we don't really know what condition Novak's left shoulder was in. He only played three points after the medical timeout and he went immediately to the drop shot on two of them and then served and volleyed on the third which indicates he may have had a hard time with his 2HBH.Did not see the Joker PCB match.

true but i saw this tournament as big progress for him. although there's still room for improvement he's cleaned up his ground game a lot, he hung in a lot of long rallies with a real grinder and is strokes are looking a lot more...repeatable. a year ago i cringed on every groundstroke of his waiting for it to fly long. net game also vastly improved. his ceiling is high if he keeps making these incremental improvements.

Yeah I agree with all that. In the presser he said he got tired in the fifth so it maybe his fitness training has not caught up to longer rallies and point construction.

Because Kenin won the AO, PCB winning here would be fit all the surprises this year. If there's a no name winning the French that would definitely signal that 2020 is an anomaly.

I watched it and my take away was that Denis has improved his volley and his aggression. He came in a lot and volleyed well. I have no doubt he’s a future slam winner. But he needs to dump Tessa as his coach. I don’t know where Youzhny was this event.Got a message from a friend who summed the match up thus:
It was all on Shapo's racquet. He was very hot and cold. Unplayable early in the 4th, went up 2 breaks and PCB tanked then took an MTO. That seemed to break Shapo's concentration and PCB made the most miraculous recovery (as if nothing was ever wrong with him

I am apparently in the minority. I enjoy watching Busta play. Having said that,
If Zverev, Thiem or Medvedev wins this event, I think it's fair to say they are just taking the logical next step in their career without dwelling too much on whether they beat the Big 3 to get there or not. These are guys who have been getting better, who have won Masters events, made major SFs (2/3 have made major Fs), who have played well against and beaten top players, and the next accomplishment on their resume is to win a major.
Busta and Rublev, I'm less inclined to say it's just the next step in their career. It would be a leap for Rublev, who has never made the SFs of a major or a masters event. It would be less of a leap for Busta.
I can't contemplate what it would mean if De Minaur wins the event because I don't have that vibrant an imagination.

I went to bed after the third as I was zonked, but somehow woke up about an hour later and saw the score. I figured Denis would pull it out, after I saw he bageled PCB. But, PCB used a fake MTO, tanked the the 4th to make Shapo feel over confident, and then took over. Shapo couldn't believe he had recovered, and it really shook him. So, yes, your friend is correct. Not an excellent strategy, but a mean one, IMO. You don't use MTO's to fool an opponent, that's not their purpose. And he should have been defaulted for that. Shapo would have looked good at this year's Wimbledon, and surprised some people....it should have happened.

I don't think he should play doubles in GS tournies. That killed him too. Way too much tennis.
You've seen the outrage from ******** being defaulted. If anything was done about strategic MTOs, toilet breaks and general stalling, he and Nadal would be defaulted from just about every tournament they enter. Could you imagine that?

it's just a bad matchup for shapo on this court at the uso. pcb knew he could win anytime he wanted, so he tanked the 4th set on purpose to improve his 5th set record.

He should do well again, my only criticism is that he can go to BO5 4 or 5 set matches are fast but as soon as he
gets bogged down with a defender like Busta who is underrated in this department and I feel is top 10 if not
top 5 even faster than Murray at his best but not in anticipation. Shapo needs another 2-3 years to get to be
able to hit winner after winner for 5 sets consistently and probably 4 years to calm down and focus better.
Look at Thiem who just beats Shapo recently in close matches and yet 6 years apart. Thiems style is better
suited to long matches but Shapos game will need Fed like focus and control for him to succeed in Slams.
Either way will be happy to see him tone down his BS too by saying its boring to see the top 3 win all the Slams
when he really just needs to be less emphatic, more humble and let that transfer to his tennis as well.

This is just my opinion of course but a 16 x 19 sv95 custom drilled unit to allow him that little extra margin over
the net for his FH and Second serve bite. He does so well but often nets his FH or misses wildly and his
second serve he goes for the works everytime but I found with the sv95 16 x 20 it is really missing that
extra bite that allows many other players to swing without concern. I found you really have to use more
snap to get more spin to help reign in the balls but it gets difficult over long periods.
Versus even other 97/98 inch 18 x 20 sticks the sv95 has less spin than all of them.
Why is everyone saying that specifically PCB has been “granted” this opportunity? Djokovic going out is just as good for everyone in the draw and PCB doesn’t gain any advantage above other players in the draw. PCB was the one who was about to be up a set against the number 1 and riled him up enough to get defaulted.

PCB is a very good player. In a way he earned his win by saving BP and then breaking Djokovic this riling him enough to commit the mistake. It's not PCB's fault.
