So much for "no one watches the WTA"

Average Joe tuning in to see Serena wins the CYGS. Imagine the shock experienced by those guys.8-B

Er she lost in the SF.

How do you explain Kerber's match just having 20k less viewers than Nadal's match and 5k less than Djokovic/Wawrinka's? They're not American.

2 American players Stephens/Keys have less than 2 million while Serena's has over 3 million so it's not just an American thing. She obviously has star power.

I remember that on Eurosport after normal commercials there still was a preview for the upcoming final Serena against Pennetta AFTER Serena had already lost to Vinci. :-D

Seemingly it was already produced and nobody realized soon enough that they have to change it or at least not show it.

It was the Serena mania effect. More viewers watched that USO than any recently because she was going for the CYGS. However, Osaka/Azarenka crushing Thiem/Zverev has nothing to do with Serena and shows they're a bigger draw in the US at least. Can't blame Americans because we all know that the women's final was better than the men's. Take that TTW fans who think the women are a sideshow. Lol

Also, to correct Rothenberg, who is wrong as usual, 2011, 2012 and 2013 USO finals all had well over 3 million viewers and none of them included Federer.

It's because saturday afternoon it's easyer for average man to stick in front of TV. While sunday there is often that family obligation haunting.

The USA is over 300 million people but I understand your point.
Yeah a typing mistake, plus I'm not so used to the unit of millions here, we use thousand, lakh/lac (100k), karod/crore (100lakh) etc..
But sometimes it looks ridiculously laughable, that most citizens of so called "the best" country in the world have lack of common sense and general knowledge...

Sadly, your last sentence has truth in it.

WTA is more palatable to casual fan. Matches are shorter. WTA does better job of marketing a broader range of players.

Women's matches tend to be ridiculously short.

Of course a 4 hour men's 5 set match will not be able to hold the same audience as a 90 minute women's match.

The average TV viewer simply will NOT be watching an entire 5 hour men's match. Particularly when the Big Three are MIA. Or even a 5 hour women's match (if that even existed).

Moreover, the men's Friday matches started at 4 pm while the women's Thursday matches started at the prime time 7 pm. a weekday match starting at Prime Time will always have a much larger audience than a match starting at 4 pm when most everyone is still outside.

This is NOT an apples and apples comparison!

Women's tennis is just about the only women's sports that Americans watch, they don't even watch women's golf.

I think they turn it on for the drama, more than the sports! Just imagine what kind of ratings Serena-Naomi would've got! Serena, you let all the ESPN executives down!

American audiences love Serena and the NFL, plus no Big 3. If anyone really thought the women were more popular, they should campaign for the premier Sunday finals spot against NFL opening weekend and see how that goes for them. Let’s not hold our breath, to some “feminists” it’s equality only when convenient (i.e. misandry).
