Mauresmo and Dechy serve faster than atp player Cipolla who is on court against Nadal now. Mauresmo is consistently 10mph faster and Dechy is a little bit faster. This guy serves most first serves in 90mph range. Both women are harder servers. This is for all you WTA bashing people.

It's a common trait for all Italians... they can't serve.

Cipola, Volandri, Seppi, Di Mauro... i haven't seen Starace play yet but i can almost guarantee he has a crap serve.

It must be a problem with the young Italians though, cos Bracciali has a big serve and Sanguinetti has a decent serve too.

You can't say it's a height issue either cos Seppi is pretty tall and he served like Kournikova against Moya.

Man, Bracciali, there is an inspiration for all of the short people out there that say that they cannot serve hard because they are shorter. It's just HARDER to serve HARDER! (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I know, that was pretty lame.)

Henin is petite and serves huge too- regularly at 115mph sometimes 120mph.

WTA is much more boring than the ATP and even if some women can serve faster than a few men it's irrelevant.

The guy is 5'8" (1,72m), that's pretty short.

I'm watching right now and his serve isn't that bad. He hits pretty decent angels sometimes..

Anyway the guy is no.227 of the world and watching him play, I know he would give Dechy and Mauresmo a severe beating if he played them

No, I understood you. I am just bringing to your attention, and everybody else's, that the same applies to the WTA. WTA is either ignored or bashed on this board and I love to bring up all the many strong points in it.

Care to comment on the rotational velocity of the ball as well for the women vs. Cipolla. I'd bet that it would be much easier to return the serve of Dechy/Mauresmo than the serve of Cipolla, because the man's serve is much "heavier".

It might be heavier but he still gets no pace on the ball so opponents have plenty of time to set up.

The height argument is irrelevant. Clement, Grosjean, the Rochus brothers and a few others are pretty short and they have good serves.
It's an italian thing, they don't teach them how to serve!

The WTA and the ATP are both tennis associations and your topic was made to supposedly show those who bash the WTA that because 2 women serve better than 1 man the WTA is not bad. Looking at the French serve stats:

Cipolla serves averaged between 95-105 mph. fastest first serve was 109, slowest serve 89.

Mauresmo (against Granville) averaged between 98-105. Fastest 108, slowest 89.

This proves nothing except that Cipolla has a slow serve. Enter Elena Dementieva, who consistently serves in the 60's (only she's highly-ranked and well known, while Cipolla is unheard of). Your argument is completely illogical. If you want to point out that Serena and Venus serve about as fast as Roger Federer (and many other men) I'll have to point out that those men usually have better placement. There's no sound argument against the fact that serves in the WTA are slower than serves in the ATP.

I think, in general-- strokes, serve, and all that, pace among the top women power players rivals that of the lower end of the ATP. The difference, though, is the spin. Men's game, even players from top D1 schools, is much heavier than what the top WTA produces.

You talked about Cipolla indeed but then you pointed to those who bash the WTA (in favor of the ATP) that 2 women pros have faster serve than Cipolla and therefore they shouldn't be bashing the WTA because there are women who serve faster than Cipolla. Fact of the matter is that tennissavy is wrong. Here are the stats from the match, taken from the French serve stats:

Cipolla serves averaged between 95-105 mph. fastest first serve was 109, slowest 89.

Mauresmo (against Granville) averaged between 98-105. Fastest 108, slowest 89.

The only two women who have ever had a serve that approaches the speed on the men's tour is Brenda Schultz-McCarthy at 130 mph (fastest serve ever on the women's tour), and Venus Williams at 128mph. Some of the other ladies can serve a bit above 110mph, but that is still a lot slower than most of the better guys on the men's tour.

This is true. Ask Roddick how much speed is irrelevant. I was only commenting on the speed however, not everything else that makes up a great serve. Very few women use the serve/are able to use the serve (action, control and placement) to their advantage these days.

Actually I think Mauresmo has a very big serve for WTA standards when she is playing well. At Wimbledon last year she definitely had one of the biggest serves, and it one of the biggest reasons she won the event.

Even 3.5 men on this board serve faster than anyone on the WTA. Around 130 mph on the average. And remember that is only their second serve. Juniors on this board average 175 mph or so.
