Djokovic should give up on Monte Carlo

Unfortunately for the serb, Monte Carlo has really became the land of struggle ever since he defeated nadal there in 2015 semi finals, 3 & 3.

Struggled heavily against Berdych in 2015 F, uncharacteristic loads of errors

Lost to Vesely in a quite poor manner in 2016 R32

Struggled against journeymen in 2017 for first 2 rounds before falling to Goffin in QF after going a break up in deciding set(vs a pigeon of him nevertheless)

Played average against two error-machine players in 2018 before ultimately falling to a very poor thiem in 3 sets (who lost 0-6 2-6 to rafa the next day)

Struggled heavily against kohlscriber in 1R in 2019 before bearing fritz and ultimately going down to medvedev in 3 sets in a very poor quality match from him (remember, the Russian is as good on clay as sloth is in running)

And now this loss to Dan Evans (again, a non factor on clay) in a match where he hit 40 unforced errors.

Nole should realistically Focus on Madrid and Rome which have become his fortress since 2016, won twice in Madrid and made almost every final in rome except for 2018 where he lost to nadal in a competitive battle.

In monte carlo, He has had a good share of 2 titles, beating the greatest warrior of tennis world en route.

P.S. :- Fellow posters and dear Nole fans, please don't take this post as an insult or hatred towards the serbian superstar.

Djokovic shouldn't bother with the clay season at all, it's a slog fest waste of time that will only be dominated by Nadal for the next decade.

He should start practicing on grass now, and all in for Wimbledon 2021.

F*ck the French Open, he has won it once, it's more than enough in an age when there is an undefeatable super strength machine dominating.

Monte Carlo is just beautiful, why leave now?

I wasn’t bothered by the loss. I’m actually not bothered about Novak’s clay season. He has very little chance to win RG or these clay masters.

I feel Novak might be saving himself for Wimbledon, olympics and us open. He’s not beating Rafa on clay so why waste unnecessary energy to reach him only to lose, get burnt out or something injured in process.

There are also other players capable of beating Novak on clay now too. He’s not the player he was on the surface from 2011 to 2016. I’d much rather he saved his energy where he more likely to win.

To be honest, at some point you've got to wonder if it's not a curse. How do you even explain that?

Well, the reason is quite simple. I do not believe in curses or superstitions at all
Nole has lost his ability to hit through the slow surfaces effectively, and when he doesn't have pace to work with, he struggles.

It was pretty apparent Djokovic wasn't much invested in the match. His body language wasn't especially positive, I think this was a strategic tank, which is the wise move. The only thing that matters in clay for him is RG. One big thing to note: his slice looked better today than I have ever seen it. His take back on the slice is now a slightly different motion to cut under the ball with less net clearance. This will be a big shot for him in grass season if he continues to improve it. Djokovic has never had a particularly good slice, he did today! An example:

And the sum of it all is that his performance in MC doesn't tell anything about his form or aspirations for later in the clay season, like Rome and RG.

I don't think he thought that, but it's a positive outcome with respect to bagel deliveries from Nadal. Well even Nadal is avoiding him on HC's like AO...so it makes sense

why lose in R2, instead of QF or SF?

only some very delusional folks can imagine that a pro athlete would tank a match, or would withdraw from a tournament to avoid another pro player

Why though? He can bike to the tournament, collect a few euros, and get some practice in

Just a bit of harmless fun with it to be fair; I don't believe in such things either. Anyway, here comes the "official" Tennis TV highlights. For once they actually bother posting... 4 minute long highlights. Meh. Between them not posting highlights and the WTA posting highlights but oddly not consistently showing converted break points... Anyway, here it is.

Oh Sir, do not tempt me like this.

Clay's not really interesting anymore. Hasn't been since 2015-16. The winner is always known. His primary focus should be Wimbledon and the grass campaign.

Maybe he has but he just plays it because it's his residence? Not really much effort for him to leave the penthouse and try his luck.

True, but Monte Carlo is his hometown tournament, so you'd think he'd treat it as more than just a warm-up for some tournament a thousand miles from home.
His brother is director of the tournament and you can be sure he is also 100% behind the tournament and the only reason it got a slot and secured 650 000 euros in prize money(with exception of Doha all other level 250 tournaments had so far 410-450 000 in prize money).
So this loss is very suspect.

Did not see Dan Evans beating Djokovic at his home tournament! Dan Evans of all people?

Watching the game, imo it's no coincidence if was Evans who managed to beat Novak:

  1. He is a solid doubles player, and is comfortable approaching the net, and at the net
  2. He has a great low slice, which he can attack with, and he backs it up with a solid flat backhand (DTL threat)
  3. But that wouldn't tally up, if he didn't have a solid FH and serve, which he does
The thing that doesn't pop out of the points above, is that his tactical approach is, in some ways, similar to Novak's. He's not going for winners, bashing it out at the baseline, which so many of the NextGen try to do. He is using court craft, to constantly try to make Novak uncomfortable, just as Novak is.

Why isn't NextGen doing this, since it seems to work against Novak?
Imo, because this isn't something Evans just started doing. My guess is that he's spent a lot more time than other players training this type of variety.

I agree completely. It’s sad it’s like this but it’s the wise thing to do.
