Has anyone purchased a high definition DVD player as of yet? The movie studios are really divided between the two new technologies. Blu-Ray holds more data but HD-DVD players are cheaper. Will Blu-Ray go the way of Betamax and be another failure for Sony like the MiniDisc?

HD DVD: DreamWorks, Paramount, Universal, Warner Bros.

Blu-Ray: Disney, Lions Gate, MGM, Sony, 20th Century Fox, Waner Bros, Blockbuster Video

I'll wait and see what happens in the format war. Industry watchers also consider it a possibility that a new different and better alternative could emerge and win the format war.

I almost made one of these threads today! Ran a search and saw it'd been done before so I decided against it.


For those of the people who are rooting for blu ray (myself included), a major blow was just dealt. Dreamworks AND paramount dropped the format for hd dvd because they claim the price is the bigger deal. Being as technologically savvy as I am, I hope blu ray wins because I think it has more potential.

That means transformers=hd dvd. All spielberg directed movies will be in both formats, and I know that he was at least assistant so maybe it'll come out for blu ray.

Here is what Michael Bay said about Paramount going HD-DVD only.

I still think that Blockbuster going Blu-Ray exclusively in the remaining of their stores is the biggest news, and is probably the main reason I'll go BR. Although those dual format players look pretty interesting, but I haven't read too much up on them.

I was almost dancing in the streets when I heard that BB dropped HDDVD.

I didn't know about bay thing, so thanks for the link. Neat to see someone who is standing up to the studio in a way.

From a technical point of view, I certainly want BR to win. In almost every respect, the BR format clobbers HD-DVD. But since it's created by Sony, they jack up the price exorbitantly. That's a deal breaker for me. I'll just have to wait until there's a clear winner. I hate to witness another VHS-vs-Betamax war, with the inferior format winning.

VHS may not have been the superior format, but as I understand it, it was the superior product. I was not around for the VHS/BetaMax WAR, but I have read up on it, but it was a good while ago. As I understood it Beta did have better quality, but at the time of the WAR it took two Beta max tapes to equal the same length as VHS tape at the time. So a watcher would have to get up spill the bits of popcorn that had fallen in his lap on the floor, and change tape out to see the rest of the movie. . . Americans are lazy, we wouldn't want to do that. Superior? Yes. But, at the time it wasn't a superior product.

Why can't we just stay with the current dvds.

And if we must upgrade, can't those manufacturers come up with a little casing (like the micro floppies) that can protect these discs from dust and scratches?

Yes, they can. In fact I think Blue Ray discs were originally going to need them until they developed the right undercoating.

Cost is the reason they don't use them. Moving parts = more higher costs.

I like to buy movies but HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies are too expensive at $30 a movie and the movie choices are very limited. Until the prices drop down, DVD is good enough for me.

I haven't looked into the the HD dvd platforms yet. But I like the movie studios that you listed with HD DVD. I would have to see a movie on both of these machines.

It's still new technology. In a few years everyone will have one of these, like most people have DVD players in their house.

I got the upscale dvd players that can get 1080p with the right HDMI cord. It looks really really good on my LCD tv. I have to say it was totally worth it. Didn't have to spend near the amount of money on this as I would have on a Blu-Ray or Hd-DVD. I would recommend this over either of these.

Its too expensive for me right now. I'm still saving for an HD box for my TV. If players fall below $200, I might consider it.

just wait for those ridiculous prices to drop. they've actually begun to drop slowly. sony's got a $300 bluray player....

just like those dvd players that were $500 when they first came out...just wait, for them to drop in the $100s....

HD DVD owns Blu-Ray. Not only the players for hd dvd are cheaper, but the disks are also cheaper as well. They can hold enough data for even the highest of today's HD TVs, so it doesn't matter if they have a little more space.

GE (yes, general electric) is developing a holographic disk that will hold approx. 1 terrabyte of memory. It will be a clear plastic disk the size of CDs and DVDs.

No way. I remember breaking my favorite "Barney" VHs when I tripped on my blanky and the VHS flew out of my hands. It was a sad day. :-(

same exact thing happened to me the other day...except i fell forward onto the cord for my hello kitty radio and broke that as well. I have a boo boo that's bigger then the whole universe!

I'm a technology ***** so I bought both a hd-dvd player and a blu-ray player when they first came out. Since then I sold my original Samsung blu-ray player and only recently bought a newer model. I'm content owning both and if anything the prices are dropping at a steady pace. I paid $500 for my Toshiba hd-dvd player just last summer and its newer version is currently selling around $300. Paid almost a grand for my original blu-ray player and $500 for my recent model. Until recent releases (300,Shooter...) blu-ray was the format that seemed to be getting most of the more modern releases. Hd0dvd was still getting some current titles but mainly re-releases of older movies. Owning both...I honestly cannot say I prefer one over the other from a technical standpoint. Certain movies on both formats look & sound simply stunning on my tv & surround sound.

Does anyone know the benefits and quality of each? Maybe a link to somewhere where they do explain that? Cuz I'm really just waiting for some clear reasons to get both, or clear reasons not to...

BTW, as far as major studios who support each platform, Porn is on the Blu-Ray side. Sadly, that is a major decider for a lotta people. :(

I thought the adult industry wasn't on the blu ray side? Didn't sony say for a while that there would be 0 porn on blu ray? I know that whatever the decision was from one of the companies has loosened a little, but one of them is still pretty against it.

Oh man really 179 is pretty step. But when the time will come I guess I will buy the attachment for it. I like playing DVD's off my 360.
