Thank you. So my guesstimate wasn't that off.

The number is not a very reliable one. It shows zero attendance for some away matches but almost 500 in attendance for other away matches. The home attendance doesn't seem to match with what I saw in person when I attended some matches at UVA in Charlottesville. I just don't know what to believe.

Nice sample reference, 1 day at a fall tourney match. Suddenly you don’t care. Okay

I attended several UVA matches in Charlottesville in '22 and that's what I noticed. It doesn't make any differences to me if there are 900 people watching the matches in person or 10 people. I am just commenting on the fact that there are more people watching UVA women volleyball (with a losing win-loss record) in person than people watching UVA men tennis.

Volleyball teams are larger, players and staffs more family to attend.

Even if you exclude volleyball staff and family members, there are more people watching UVA volleyball in person than UVA tennis, from those games that I attended, even when women volleyball does not have a winning record. You can see women volleyball games televised on ACC/ESPN network whereas there is no tennis showing on ACC/ESPN network, that I am aware of.

Students can walk across campus to the volleyball matches. Not tennis, now that all matches are at the new courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club. However, easier for off campus tennis fans to park and attend off campus.

My favorite is these comparisons of tennis to other sports who have indoor venues that don't closely relate to a tennis center or a team match spread across 6 courts. I watched a ton of college tennis on TV (ESPN 3 & +), streaming and in person last year. Have not attended a college volleyball game since my sister played 28 years ago.

I nominate Bob to gather up all the non-tennis non-revenue generating sports attendance secrets and share those with us and the ITA.

You must be a government worker with a reading problem. LMAO.

I commented on the attendance at UVA tennis matches when I was there. It doesn't mean I care about attendance for UVA tennis. Attendance for UVA men tennis does not benefit me.

We already know you are unfortunately. LMAO LMAO

Since we like working with small sample sizes, just so happens the team I follow will have all 3 of their matches this weekend broadcast live on ESPN+.

Maybe someone already answered this but are matches at Lake Nona not live streamed through Playsight or some other kind of USTA streaming ?

Historically the Playsight cameras have always been directly accessible; including when there are no matches being played. The only times I can recall this not being the case has been on Match Day events where either ESPN+ or TC takes over and brings in way better equipment; or when TennisOne hijacks them for the NCAA tournament (in which case you watch the same old Playsight cameras, but TennisOne "adds value" by making you watch a 30 second commercial every time you want to switch courts). Haven't tried them so far but I will shortly. But it they aren't working today, it's great to know that ESPN2 now shows air hockey. I wish I was making that up.

the NCAA tournament will not be broadcast (or streamed) but The NIT team championship will (I guess this will be teams that don't make the NCAA tournament like the post season NIT basketball tournament?)
This makes the point that it has nothing to do with the number of spectators in the stands or some such excuse.

Kudos to UTR for promoting college tennis. I for one will be watching. So tragic that UTR was shut out of the NCAAs in favor of WTN. Otherwise could have seen them broadcasting the main event too. UTR pro circuit broadcasts are pretty decent

Interesting. I think they will have some teams that did not make it out of the opening weekend of NCAA tourney. If they limited themselves to teams that did not even get into the NCAA tourney, that would not be very interesting.

But picking up some good teams who got upset early would make it interesting. Who knows, maybe they will get both the men and women from Stanford.

@marco_forehand @Sureshot @ClarkC I like the idea of the NIT. However the teams that make early exit (2 seeds?) from NCAA may still have 1s and 2s who qualify for NCAA singles. Those guys might not want to play another tourney before NCAA singles. What are the dates for NCAA singles? Since this tourney will be held in Atlanta, I wonder if it will be held at Georgia Gwinnett which has hosted uTR PTT Tours. Is the NIT D1 only or open to teams of any division? Several Auburn guys played two back to back ATL PTT events a year or two back. Think one Auburn player won one and a different Auburn player the other. I could see a probable 2 seed Auburn playing the NIT except Stice and maybe others would qualify for NCAAs. NIT may appeal more to other divisions esp if a mix of D1 and top teams from other divisions. Is this the year where all the divisions have team champs in Lake Nona? Also collegians earned $$$-up to $3k for playing UTR PTT event. Will the NIT which I assume doesnt pay out $ since it is a team event be worth it to players who played a round at NCAAs? It may appeal more to the teams that didnt get in NCAAs to get in something though it would be less interesting to fans. The prestige of being best of 8 random teams is far less than being best of 64. Usually Futures dont start until June so players may be willing to hang around. I see it more appealing to southern or Florida teams or teams with more American players. The internationals may want to book a flight home as soon as team is out of NCAAs unless they qualify for NcAA singles. I wonder what % of international players who play summer Futures play them in their home regions, e.g. Europe, Asia, etc vs staying in US and playing. If they are staying in US, they could be interested in playing NIT. I hope the tourney draws good teams-living in ATL suburbs, it would be fun to watch.

I really don't like watching college tennis, on television, for the following reasons:

1) The split screen is annoying...it's annoying when ESPN does it at slams, even briefly, and it's far more prevalent in college tennis broadcasts.

2) The camerawork and coverage is decidedly low budget feeling. It's like some random guy just went out and filmed his match at the local courts.

3) The team atmosphere doesn't appeal to me that much: people yelling out, the frenetic energy, the lack of professionalism compared with the pros...it's not for me.

4) The terrible line calls/cheating. The umpires don't seem to do much. It's embarrassing for college tennis that D1 men don't play lets because of all the cheating. Why isn't there automatic line calling system in use? No other major sport that I know of is essentially self-refereed at that level.

Watching in person is more fun, though I'd rather watch a low-level prize money tournament. I used to coach two college teams, both of which were weak D3 programs. I support college tennis, but to me, it's not that interesting to watch on television for those reasons.
