MG Prestige MP or Pro

Hi I'm about to purchase either the MG Prestige Pro or MP but I'm undecided between the two.

I use the APDC but I'm looking for more control. I'm a 3.5-4.0 player (self rated). I hit between a semi western and western grip in forehands and two handed backhand. Primarily a baseliner but looking to improve all court game.

Whats the major difference between the two?

I like the 16 x 19 of the pro, just like the APDC, but i'm afraid i won't be able to handle its 12.1 oz weight.

Let me know what you think.

I think you would have no problems in handling the weight. The MG pro feels much lighter than the stats would suggest. I used MG extreme pro, and it feels way heavier and more sluggish to swing. Swinging MG prestige pro is a breeze

I too am interested in what other peoples experience has been with the mp vs the pro. I hit with some topspin but on the flat side. I played this weekend with the mp and found a nice groove with the racket. I had a good feel for the ball with lots of control and able to hit my spots.
I was about to purchase the mp when my local pro shop encouraged me to try the pro. What have others experienced with these rackets. It seems previous threads about the Prestige has suggested the mp would be better for my style of play. I have suffered from TE in the past so that is a factor as well.

I play with an APDC and have also been contemplating the move to the MG either Pro or MP. I have not been able to source a demo locally for the pro but have hit extensively with the MP. Wow, what a great stick. I'm not usually a fan of the 18X20 patterns but this was really nice. I got plenty of power and the spin was still really nice. The 11.8 oz of the MP seems to suit me perfectly and I'm reluctant to move up to the 12.1 oz of the Pro. Several people have mentioned to me that the extra weight of the Pro is noticeable and also several have also mentioned having an issue with 2 handed backhands on the Pro because of the short grip. I assume the the grip length is the same on the MP and I had no issues with it on the backhand side.

Now it gets interesting since Bab is coming out with the Storm Limited next month, it might make sense to wait and try that ;)

hmmm i think i'm going to try out the pro..i've used a fxp prestige mp and it weighed in at 12 oz, but it swung very easily and was very munverable..plus the 16 x 19 pattern will help me maintain the topspin oriented game that i have..

i now wish i had gotten the MP instead of the pro. i ditched the pro not too long after i got it

How come you ditched the pro and wished that you purchased the Mp. Just trying to gather more input as I make that decision.

I demoed both the pro and the mp, and I found the mp to be more solid, control and penetrating on groundstrokes and volleys. Eventhough the pro is listed higher in terms of weight, but the pro swings lighter compared to the mp. The pro has more spin potential due to its more open string pattern, but the mp is also adequate in terms of spin.

i agree with this completely. I definitely liked the depth and penetrating shots i had more with the MP. I thought i could be more consistent with the Pro, but i think i was wrong. I think Michael Chaho, even though he was thrilled with the Pro when demoing it...after actually buying one got rid of the pro. same thing happened to me. The pro doesn't have that open of a string pattern either...it's still very dense. especially with 16g string

I had a hit with the MG Pro and quite liked it...the grip felt shorther though on my 2HBH...my left hand was holding the frame a little. Anyone else noticed this on new MG's??

yep. what you can do is get a new grip or leather grip and wrap it higher like 1" or more on the frame. works well

Would it be fair to say given the mp vs the pro that if you hit more of a flat ball the mp would be a better fit. However I was able to get sufficient top spin with the MP. I will demo the pro tomorrow.

BTW what type of game do you have?Just wondering if its simliar to mine.

Zidane, Sorry for the delay. I took the MP Pro out for a test run. I put it down after 5 mins and went back to the Midplus. Perhaps it was the strings or was even strung too tightly for my taste. However, the racket felt stiff and lacked the control I had experienced with the MP. Unfortunately I cannot give your more information than that. Simply it did not feel comfortable to me. I have had tennis elbow and was off the courts until 6 months ago for 1 1/2 yrs.. I have been playing for 25 years and learned how to play from the old school. I hit with some topspin but my ball is generally flat on the forehand side but now hit a two-handed backhand(to deal with TE) which naturally has spin. I enjoyed the feel and control of the mp and could get some nice zip on my shots. Serving was ok but nothing special but my volleys seemed crisp, and I could feel the ball on the strings. I would prefer some more weight, and will try to customize, but do not want to lose the balance.
I have been playing with VS gut so I am curious how the racket will play with gut. I ordered the mp and will have it tomorrow. I hope this is helpful and the best I can say if a racket feels good to you, that is the best racket to purchase. It is so subjective. This racket seems to suit my style of play.

Hey thanks APG that helps a lot..I'm going to try to find some demos and see which one suits me better..I'm glad you found the one that fits you adn I hope you enjoy your new racquet!

I own two of the Pro's, but I'm used to Wilson grip size 3 - and to me the MG prestige Pro's grip in size 3 feels kind of on the smallish side to me.

Should I order a grip size 4 - or just put two overgrips on the grip instead of the one overgrip, that I normally use on my Wilson rackets ?

im using alpha mxt strings on it right now - seems fine but now that I've made a commitment to stick with this frame I want to spend some time getting the strings and blance perfected.

I started by ordering one set of each 17g string that Gosen makes.

I play tennis since 30 years now and was a tennis pro (USPTR Professional) for more than 10 years. My game style: Fast drives (not extreme topspin) on fore- and backhand, straight, slice and kick-services, all court player. This is my honest opinion: I tried all 3 versions of the MG Prestige line. My stick is the Pro version. The Pro is well balanced with the correct weight and has the most power and best spin of all. The MP version was too light for me and the string pattern to tight. Over the time I also think that the Pro version is the best decision for a tennis players elbow. The weight of 325g is perfect and if you swing fast and long the power and control of the Pro is georgeous. I would never change my Pro version and for me it´s one of the best HEAD racquets ever produced.

Honestly, your best bet is to demo both and see whether you like the MP or the Pro better. I did that and found the Pro to suit my game much closer and I have since purchased a Prestige Pro as my daily hitter.

He is talking about the open pattern version (16x19) of AG200 that has a very low swingweight as well as the MGPP. The AG200 18x20 version is really sluggish compared to Head MG Prestiges.

tarie, what does that motion mean? that flexing with the pointed fingers... I saw Tipsarevic do this in his match against Federer last year. he then curled his fingers into a fist.

is it a taunt

I have a question. What is the recommended string for the mg prestige pro that's written in the throat? I recently purchased a used one and it has head control string. I thought all the mgs have sonic pro as the recommended string? Anyone can confirm? Thanks

The one Lleyton is doing in my avatar?I don't know actually,someone says it's a swedish motion(I saw Bjorkman doing it sometime),others say it's an aussie motion..so I don't know,but it's cool!:)

Anyway I know that ag200 16x19 and Prestige Pro are in a different weight category,but if you bring the ag200 to the same weight of Prestige Pro,what would it be the difference in playing?

I'm still in love with my Flexpoint Prestige MP's

I have no problem generating topspin with this racket, if your racket head speed is sufficient, the pattern doesn't make too much of a difference except open ones usually feel more lively, and the ball comes off the string bed at a higher angle.

I grew up playing on prestige's, so i like the dense patterns :]

I tried like heck to like the MG Prestiges enough to switch from my FXP's (don't know why, but the buzz about the microgels was pretty big). The Pro was WAY too light for my game - swingweight wise - for what I was used to swinging and I was not in the mood to just add weight to make it feel like my Flexpoint versions (I had also become accustomed to the dense pattern and agree that it is just fine to create racquethead speed and spin). The MG MP was a really nice stick but it did not have the mojo that I had developed with my Flexpoints. I think it was because I had been using the Flexpoints for a couple of years and my arm (and game) was used to them. I too am still a loyal FXP Prestige MP user.

I believe Mats Wilander started this and it was shortly thereafter picked up by many of the other Swedes. Not sure why Lleyton picked it up, but I guess he can at least be credited with the come on cry (c'mon if you are an Aussie), which many of the tour players have seem to have adopted.

Haven't played any of the microgels yet...but with regards to the AG 200 16x19 question...I found it a bit light swinging and was dropping balls short when playing it stock.
With a leather grip+supergrap and some 4-5 grams of lead in the head ... it's a really sweet stick for me (and still swings lighter than my main Tour 10's).
I think (stock) it's a great control stick for juniors who can't yet handle a Prestige type weight/sw, but need a serious racket that can be used for a long time. With some (slight) modifications ... it can be played at ANY level in my opinion.
Good...very good racket.

correct, the strings that are recommneded on the MGPP are sonic pro... as for all the MGs... i'm not sure about that...

Really? I purchased a MG P pro used from someone in the forum and mine says use head control string.. I fear mine is a fake one.. I have an extreme pro and it says sonic pro..

Sonic Pro is classified as "control string" by head

The MG Prestige and MG Radical I have seen say "Use HEAD Control String".

I recently demoed the MG Prestige Pro, MP and kBlade Tour (hot topic on the forum). I liked the MP better. I thought it was very crisp and also familiar since I used LM Prestige MP. The Pro seemed to lack power for me. kBalde Tour was very stiff and strings bed felt dead. I'll definitely be upgrading to the MG Prestige MP.
