NYC hot spot on sake for USO

sakegura. it used to be one of my spots when i worked in NYC. it's in a basement of an office building and you literally walk down the stairs and knock on the door (think beerfest). the food is good but most importantly try their sake sample line to get all the different flavors.

http://www.sakagura.com/

oh there's a rather large sake barrel right outside of the men's room. please refrain tfm from his urges to **** there. it's for decore no matter how drunk he is or how much it looks like a enlarged chamber pot.

P.S.S JRK, are you making a day trip to USO?

hola folks. just got back from the beach. the kids are watching horton hears a who and chubby baby is on the floor eating my camera. sure beats work. :)

i take one day off and i miss 3 pages of TW MAC posts. very hard to keep up.

getting a bucket of crabs tonight. i'm pushing for crab legs though. i like them cuz they are easier to open and more reward for the effort.

Hey, T-man. Thought of you tonight at the Tennis for Nature tournament at the Worldgate. One of the team we played enroute to our consolation round championship was a Mutt and Jeff pairing. The younger guy was 6'6", and his partner was - I swear - 5'1". Man, I'm not used to towering over another guy. And he was the power player on that team!

You would have loved the irony. :)

That irony is that those guys were the captain and co-captain of my 7.0 mixed team. I got paired with both of them throughout the season. They are both actually 3.0s. Nice guys, but I never won a match with either of them. Got close, but no cigar. The only time I actually got paired with a 3.5 guy...no problem.

Tres cool. Interesting team to play, but not much of a challenge. My partner didn't really find his serve until the last match, so Mutt and Jeff pushed us a bit. The little guy (ha, how I love saying that!) was a bit combative at times, but then again I used to be that way until I found out there WERE people shorter than I in this world.

Nice paint job, by the way. Schools should be bright and colorful. You done good. :)

I attended the South African Embassy BBQ out by Cabin John today.

I noticed the outdoor courts there. They look pretty nice. ever play there? Looks like a good possible site for our next TW meet.

Yup. A lot of peeps i know play there. Its always crowded and public. You can't reserve anything and its fierce trying to get and stay on a court!

Thats if you are talking about the outdoor courts. The indoor courts are a fuzz carpet with hardcourts underneadth.

Hey, Sup. You seem to get all the tennis tech questions, so I'll ask your opinion on hybrid string.

Part of the Goodie Bag for the Tennis for Nature tournament this weekend was a package of Babolat Hybrid string (17/ga Pro Hurricane Tour and 16/ga Xcel). I've not tried any hybrid combos yet and was wondering if you have any insight about this particular one.

I've been playing with 16/ga Wilson K-Gut. I know you haven't seen me hit much, but if you have any thoughts, I would appreciate hearing them.

Thanks.

What I don't love, however, is the price tag!

Hybrids are very popular.

However, my opinion is that its not for the recreational warrior. Why?

Poly's lose tension very quickly. Though you are able to generate massive amounts of spin, a string like Pro Hurricane Tour.. which I used as a whole set up.. plays so low powered, you can't hit long if you wanted too. The downside, is its very harsh on the arm.. a stiffness rating of 220 and up (while gut is at 90)... coupled with the rate it loses tension (again per USRSA survey .. fast!).. you would have to change strings every other hitting session to keep consistent. You will also gain no advantage with playability if you do so.. ending up in the long run playing with a dead string.

Babolat Excel is a superb string. Overall rating of the string is through the roof! I've hit with it, and its an excellent string for playability, tension hold and low stiffness.

Now seeing those two are very polar opposites. Putting them in a hybrid sounds counter effective.. if you plan on keeping them in your racquet for a lengthy amount of time. If you are a pro, have a budget to change them out every other hit, and possible string your own racquet.. Hybrids are the way to go.

Otherwise. Sell it or try it out. Again, I agree its a great set up.. best of both worlds.. in the long run.. for those non string breakers or those who dont change out strings for a while.. i would recommend to stay away. The industry wants you too try them, cause it plays awesome in the beginning .. then dies quickly. Making you buy more (lightbulb should go on now)..

Sup

P.S. I await PP's rebutal.

xisbum -- and you thought of me why? cuz i'm a midget? cuz i'm a mutt? pick a day. my midget azz is gonna run you ragged on the courts!

JRstreaker -- sup has it right. the cabin john outdoor courts are fine but you can't reserve them and they fill up fast. and then you have to fight all the weekend warriors who come out when the weather warms up.

crab update -- no crabs this weekend. :( too busy with the 6 rugrats that came with us to the beach. actually thought about finding a babysitter so the 6 adults could sneak away for 3 hours of all you can eat crab. no dice. the closest i got to crabs was this really stanky hooker on the boardwalk. my spidey sense tingled and i walked away. slowly. but on the way home, we passed by this tiny crab shack that advertised HEAVY CRABS. it got my attention. i will return.

xisbum -- i have been playing with pro hurricane tour (full) for the past year. it's a relatively soft poly. that's mostly like saying it's a pretty soft concrete. it plays dead which means it takes an act of god to hit the ball out. it can generate a ton of spin which is always nice. unfortunately it dies pretty quickly. i have a racquet with PHT in it that's 2 months old. it was strung at 52 pounds i think and it must now be in the low 30's. and to realize any benefit from poly you have to have a pretty fast swing - otherwise you got a dead string with bad tension holding. maybe you should try the Excel on its own. if you wanna try a multi i also enjoyed tecnifibre x-one biphase.

I also attempted to get some crabs this weekend to no avail.

Also most crab places will say the got heavy crabs. The key is look on the bellies, general rule the browner the belly the heavier and fuller that crab will be of meat. All you can eat joints usually serve paper shelled carbs with no meat. Those are the crabs you actually burn more calories pickin than the actual meat contains.

A couple weeks ago I bought 1.5 dozen Jumbo crabs shipped in from texas. at 80 bucks a dozen it would seem a bit pricey. But my dad and i ate about 5 a piece and couldnt eat anymore. then the next night I went to my friends parents wehre myself and his dad and mom had trrouble finishing the rest of them.

I like the bi-phase. I got it my 325. at first strung at 59 lbs. a little tigt at first but after about 8 hours hittin they feel pretty good.

I cant really give you a website for this particular place its a local joint in Abingdon MD. But if you insist Kent Island Seafood

If you want a nice sit down spot with some goods crabs you can hit bobrooks in Bmore http://bobrooks.com/about/crabs/
although they are a little pricey. most places that sell crabs should sell them in different sizes. If you call just make sure you are still getting Texas or louisiana crabs. MD Crabs just aint fat yet

Okay - who wants to play this Thursday???? Sapient? Should we go down to Howard?

Sup, TFM, Hollywood - You have me thinking of trying out a multi again. But it will be hard to break the BG habit. Really hard.

IMHO - even though poly loses it tension fairly fast, it's so stiff and dead, that it doesn't really matter too much for the average player. I used to play with Wilson Reaction string at about 60, but I swear, as soon as the tension dropped, the balls were flying. With the BG/Goosen hybrid I have now, I just play it until it feels too dead. Prob - restring about every 3-4 weeks.

Cool it, man. Only thought of you because of your often stated belief that fellow TFMACers always put you in a hole when they take photos. We proved by standing side-by-side at the Reston meet that I will always be Muff to your Jeff.

And you don't need any extra motivation to run me ragged; just hit a ball where you think I can't get it, and like one of Pavlov's, er, mutts, I'll be off, running myself ragged. Can't help myself; it's a classic case of conditioned response. :)

xisbum maybe you should try the Excel on its own. if you wanna try a multi i also enjoyed tecnifibre x-one biphase.

Actually, I kinda like the K-Gut, but I'm starting to feel some twinges in my old TE elbow and I'm trying to find something that might be as easy on the 'bow as natural gut. I can go back to the natural, but even so puny a hitter as I can wear them out in 6 weeks, tops. That can get a bit pricey if I play year-round, which I like to do.

xisbum -- i'm just messing. i have no inferiority complexes about my height, rugged good looks or skill with the ladies. everything else i have issues that i see a therapist for including my tennis game.

maybe i'm wrong but k-gut is almost as pricey as natural gut. i gotta think there is a multi or synthetic that plays great and is A LOT cheaper.

i'm going to finish up some luxilon big banger alu rough and tecnifibre spinfire (really dirt cheap poly) and then i'm going on a cheap multi search. i am no longer the string breaker i used to be. i think i'm getting old. old and more ruggedly good looking.

Oh geez!

I use a great string, that plays like a poly (has a poly coating), easier on the arm (its a multi) and is cheap ($6 bucks!).

I wish TW would carry it, but they don't. I got Drakulie to try it and he hasnt changed up since.

Pro Supex Maxim Touch. Google it, or email me at Sup2dresq@aim.com and I'll give you the name of the website that carries it.

Strange Courts

BTW- what's up with the High Schools with the strange, rubber cushion courts?

I played out at Potmac High School in Sterling this weekend and the courts had some sort of cusioned, rubbery base that you could feel justy walking on it. It sucked, the balls died as soon as they bounced.

I think South Lake H.S. in Reston has the same thing and Nottaway park used to have two courts with a similar surface.

Ayone know what that surface is and WTF they use it?

Not sure what it is but ill take a guess at why they use it.

They are pansies plain and simple. This whole damn country is getting soft. You cant play dodgeball becuase these weakling kids feel bad when they plucked in the face. Parents dont want thier kids to play baseball because on a good day they will fail 7 out of 10 times, and dont want the kids psyche messed up. They may lose in tennis and I dont want my son losing and feeling bad. My kid may get hurt playing tennis on an actual hard court, so we better have this nice soft stuff so it easier on his feet.

guess what, you are going to lose and you are not always going to get your way. But this country has spent too much energy trying to make evryone happy. Look at that Sub vs BMW thread. the kids dad is going to buy him a brand new Impreza only he wants a BMW. That kids parents probably would be mad at me if i hit him with a over head, or if one of serves kicked up and plucked him in the head.

So thats why they use it. They have to have thier every little need coddled to or else they may not feel too good.

I feel you on the Sub vs. BWM thread. It's nice that his parents can buy him a car, but I wouldn't be crying if I got a WRX instead of a BMW 3 series.
