Ok, all of the talk, all of the threads, etc etc....

Time to draw a line in the sand, make a mark, record your thoughts.

Who is it going to be?

I'll still go with Federer(and I'm prepared to be bashed for it and be called a fanatic and a ******).I think Roger will win Wimbledon again and carry over that confidence heading into the USO series.

There you go, y'all know my thoughts.

4175 points to defend out of the 6700 is too much for the big man. Joker and Rafa with 2000pts more to defend so Im going with .. look up the poll.

Yes Federer has many points to defend, but I think he will squeek through.

I do think Djokovic will take #2 and Nadal to slip to #3. While Nadal was impressive in the Wimbledon final, he wasn't so stellar getting there. He is more likely to lose before a final appearance than Djokovic.

I get tears in my eyes from laughing at Federer included in such a poll. When are some of you people going to finally get it. Federer is not nearly the player he used to be, period. Embarassing losses to Fish, Stepanek, and others, embarassing near losses to players whose names you can barely pronounce, and the humiliation of the French Open final destruction, are still not enough to make some people come to terms with this!?!? I guess some of you will never accept the truth when it is your hero. Maybe he will recover it at some point but noway enough by the end of the year to come from way behind and take the year end #1.

Really hard choice between Nadal and Djokovic. My heart says Nadal, my head says Djokovic by a hair.

Typical over-reacting response; yet, despite his allegedly being "not the player he was", his clay-court season was arguably almost as good as the last 2 years, and he made almost every final on clay he entered (except Rome).

Federer will end the year at #1, again, and you'll be eating your words...or maybe making new predictions of Federer's decline for next year.

The thing is, you decline-predictors are like a broken record, and can never be wrong in your mind. You've been predicting the same thing for 2 or even 3 years now. It's time to shut your holes. Even if it happens next year, so what? It's bound to happen at some point.

Shows you the wonders of what a dream draw can do for you. You dont have to play the 2nd best tennis of anyone at a tournament to make a final sometimes (and Federer certainly was not playing the 2nd best tennis of anyone at this years French Open), you merely need to play a string of nobodies to reach the final. I wonder how often someone does not have to play a single top 20 player, and only 1 top 35 player to reach the final.

You just keep thinking that, like you probably told yourself Federer had a shot in the French Open final vs Nadal, even as he played his mediocre and sluggish tennis the entire French Open until the final, even struggling to put away Gael Monfils (LOL!) in the semis.

or maybe making new predictions of Federer's decline for next year.

I dont know what predictions I will make for next year or not. Federer will have to show much stronger tennis then any he has showed this year for me to think he is showing signs of life and to predict a return to contention for #1 and slam titles next year however. If he does not show sings of life in the 2nd half of the year then yes my predictions will probably be similar, and for good reason. Only the blind can not see that Federer's caliber of tennis the entire 2008 year is not even close to grand slam winning worthy.

It is so easy to lump a bunch of people who are not Federer worshippers together all as one. I have not been predicting this for 2 or 3 years. I only began to point out some obvious signs of his decline midway through last year. Yes he did win Wimbledon and the U.S Open, but in less then stellar fashion and those finals will be remembered largely for Nadal outplayed Federer badly in all departments but the serve but still losing in the Wimbledon final, and Djokovic choking atleast the early stages of the U.S Open final. The signs of Federer's decline were very evident to me then and I said so, and this year they have come to fruition. Yes in my mind I am always right pretty much, and in this case nothing has happened to go against what I have been saying since around the middle of last year. I would not be if I were predicting this for 2 or 3 years, but I havent been.

Voted for Federer, he s still the favourite for Wimbledon and the US Open.
If either Nadal or Djokovic are getting closer he could play a "non mandatory" tournament to gain points, like he did in Estoril.

Federer IMO, if he hits form at Wimby and USO there will be a lot of people saying "what were we worried about?"

Nadal will continue his 3rd year titleless after the FO, until Monte Carlo the next year.

last year he already played amazingly good, but still came out with nothing after FO.

Well said and very true. And also, to anointedone, are you saying Federer is not the 2nd best clay courter right now? Pretty sure the only people that don't think he is are people that are anti-Federer.

Federer will be #1. He'll win Wimbledon and has as good of a chance as anyone to win the open. Nadal won't be as fortunate at Wimbledon this year and I can't see Djokovic winning Wimbledon. Either way they both have to hope Federer loses and Federer has always had better results in the second half of the year.

hahaha i see many roger fans here but the question is who will be number 1. not who you want to be number 1!

Well the number 1 should certainly not be some total ***** who quits a match just because he's losing. Roger's already said it to you, but I'll repeat it "Be quiet, ok?"

Novak has so much to gain in so many tournaments and opens coming up, whilst Federer has so much to lose. Based on how things are looking now, I'm going with Novak. It just seems logical.

Yeah that seems to happen to him a lot doesn't it? I mean what 14% of his defeats coming from retirements, and only 20 years old? Compared to Federer who has never retired from a match and can take a beating like a man.

who voted for djokovic?!?!

as good as he is he is waaaaaay back in pts compared to nadal and fed. As long as fed and nadal do moderately well djoke wont catch them. He could slip into #2 if nadal fails at grass and hard court... but not #1, feds too far ahead

Djokovic has also a lot of points to lose (semifinals in wimbledon and US open final). Federer has been defending a huge amount of points for several years, this is the first year Djokovic has to defend so many point.

You are a very disturbed individual. I know it's fun for you to pretend, but if the real Mrs. Djokovic reads your posts, you could get into a lot of trouble.

Anyway, Federer is definitely in pressure situation right now. If he overcomes this present adversaries, he will become even better than what he already achived so far and quantumn leap to where no one else ever reached. If he falters, of course, it could be the beginning of his decline.... I think we are in historical juncture and these 3 guys are in that mix.

for most of last year, federer was tailing nadal in the race but by the end of the year he gained on him to keep the year-end no.1 ranking.

It seems like you don't understand how rankings work. Federer has reached at least the final in 7 out of 8 events starting from Wimbledon. Djokovic has only a semi final after the US Open. Imagine Djokovic winning the Masters Cup for instance. That gives gim 750 points while Federer loses at least 250.

If Djokovic does exactly as well as he did last year, with the exeptions that he wins either Wimbledon or US Open, and the Masters Cup, he will be No. 1. That means, all he needs to do is win one of the Masters and reach the semis in one, (Canada, Cincinatti, Madrid or Paris). Then he needs to reach the semis in wimbledon and win US Open, or the other way around. He also needs to win the Masters Cup. That all is in fact an underachievement for his standards.

And there you go, we have a new No. 1.

Nadal. He has a great chance at Wimbledon. And he has hardly any points to defend in his usually less than par second half of the year.

nadal or djokovic. and it's gonna be close.

nadal will win wimby, make the semis in nyc for 1st time, and win a hard court tourney, edging novak at the business end of a riveting duel in shanghai to take #1.

in short, on pressure on nadal after wimby for an ever-improving and more attacking rafa nadal.

Based on Djokovic's injury/'breathing" history on hard courts, I'd say he'll be staying at #3.
