Typical over-reacting response; yet, despite his allegedly being "not the player he was", his clay-court season was arguably almost as good as the last 2 years
Shows you the wonders of what a dream draw can do for you. You dont have to play the 2nd best tennis of anyone at a tournament to make a final sometimes (and Federer certainly was not playing the 2nd best tennis of anyone at this years French Open), you merely need to play a string of nobodies to reach the final. I wonder how often someone does not have to play a single top 20 player, and only 1 top 35 player to reach the final.
Federer will end the year at #1, again, and you'll be eating your words
You just keep thinking that, like you probably told yourself Federer had a shot in the French Open final vs Nadal, even as he played his mediocre and sluggish tennis the entire French Open until the final, even struggling to put away Gael Monfils (LOL!) in the semis.
or maybe making new predictions of Federer's decline for next year.
I dont know what predictions I will make for next year or not. Federer will have to show much stronger tennis then any he has showed this year for me to think he is showing signs of life and to predict a return to contention for #1 and slam titles next year however. If he does not show sings of life in the 2nd half of the year then yes my predictions will probably be similar, and for good reason. Only the blind can not see that Federer's caliber of tennis the entire 2008 year is not even close to grand slam winning worthy.
The thing is, you decline-predictors are like a broken record, and can never be wrong in your mind. You've been predicting the same thing for 2 or even 3 years now. It's time to shut your holes. Even if it happens next year, so what? It's bound to happen at some point.
It is so easy to lump a bunch of people who are not Federer worshippers together all as one. I have not been predicting this for 2 or 3 years. I only began to point out some obvious signs of his decline midway through last year. Yes he did win Wimbledon and the U.S Open, but in less then stellar fashion and those finals will be remembered largely for Nadal outplayed Federer badly in all departments but the serve but still losing in the Wimbledon final, and Djokovic choking atleast the early stages of the U.S Open final. The signs of Federer's decline were very evident to me then and I said so, and this year they have come to fruition. Yes in my mind I am always right pretty much, and in this case nothing has happened to go against what I have been saying since around the middle of last year. I would not be if I were predicting this for 2 or 3 years, but I havent been.
