My son is almost 6 now and has been playing for 1 yr. I would be thrilled if he became good enough to get a Div I tennis scholarship :) .

My tennis training for him is: FUN FUN FUN..

I try to make him play with friends or with the whole family.

Some where if you look around long enough is enough material on these forums to write a book.
"The Redneck Guide to World Class Junior Tennis and Raising Obedient Children" By Brad Baughman...
With a introductory chapter about grammar, punctuation and spelling by the author but edited by a world class editor/proof reader, and a disclaimer not to abandon your written homework like the author had done in his childhood.
Nice work at producing lapdogs, Brad...
Hopefully they'll figure it out before you do when they're teenagers.

Great post Brad I think you're fantastic. We looked at Deiton on youtube and he has some serious game. Plus he looks like he enjoys hitting that ball.

I think you know what you're doing! The only thing I would say from the point of view of someone who didn't make it (there's a whole convention of us out there lol) is to start putting some money aside now for travel later..don't invest it all in his junior career. I thnk you know this though! Some players do well immediately in futures but others take awhile. It sucks to run out of money and he doesn't get a full chance at it. If he decides not to play for whatever reason he can use that money for school or a house or something, so its win win. But I cant tell you how many people ran out of dough too soon on the futures circuit and wish they had back some of that money they spent on academies and stuff like that. Especially in your case because you two can tweak his game together versus always asking a coach for help.

thanx we are allready planning for the futures and all that, theres allready things in the works to take care of all the traveling, as for the juniors its not what were shooting for we understand where to put the money i see a lot of wasted money fortunately diet has a great team around him to help him make the right decisions

Just follow the ideas from the 1998 movie Soldier

"The film begins in the year 1996 (year zero). A group of infants are chosen by a commander in the American forces, to be raised as soldiers. We watch one of the infants, Todd, as he matures and undergoes extreme mental and physical training to prepare for his career. This includes phrase repetition conditioning, running, weapons training, wrestling, boxing, and desensitization to violence. Todd appears to be one of the best in his group. After completing their training in 2013 (year seventeen), Todd and his group fight in multiple wars, including the War of the Six Cities (year thirty-eight), the Moscow Incident, and the Battle of the Argentine Moons."

Train kids from their birth, and give them all the mental and physical conditioning. Then, teach them all there is to the game so that all they can do in life is play tennis

That's great and what I thought was happening!

I totally agree about the wasted money. I'm kind of mentoring this girl and her parents have some concepts of what they should be doing and they are just always wasting money. It is not like they have a ton of it either.

As far as me...I never got past the $10K level, never even qualified. There were just so many better players. I was just not that good. I had some drama too. But, in all fairness, I might have done a little bit better if I'd had the cash to at least stay out there a little bit longer. Maybe not, but who knows. I think that's why I'm so sensitive to that. I knew so many people who did have the money and they could just travel around and let their games mature, and also chase points and your odds go up for the good draws too.

its funny how maney parents are wasting gobs of $$$ to get a ranking in the 12's 14's 16's ' we watched a boy travel everywhere to get his ranking good and we played a 3rd of what he played localy and our son is ahead of him and the boys a decent player too!!

we teach when you are entering the competition you are never to think the other guy stands a chance, your not there to lose, your to fight for every point because winning is the only thing that matters at that point in time.Ive always told my son you are to go out there and give it everything you have your not here to lose!! that help?

Nothing wrong with that... my kid is starting to feel the pressures of winning.. we just had a good going over and I told him that
''if you cannot commit to doing tennis 100% the right way ,then quit. there's nothing wrong with just going to school, making good grades and playing high school tennis for fun. if you want to play tournament tennis it's got to be 100% all the time, and that means 'winning'. because tournament tennis is not only about him,it's about everyone else behind him too. if he has a 8a.m. match, his mom has to get up at 5 something to get everything ready and then drive and then stay the day... that's alot of dedication from everybody..and to go out there and lose with a half-ass effort is not acceptable ..." then he says " mom expects me to win all the time" .I told him.. "yes, darn right.. if you don't think you can win a match or any tournament ,then just default and stay home,so we all don't need to waste everyone's time going out there...." it's harsh but it's reality ...I've always told him that every tournament I've entered him in ,I expected him to win ,but is that going to happen=== No ,but that's my mind's thought going in... sometimes you have to brainwash yourself to thinking what-ever you want to believe....

At least your in reality if im reading you right!!, and i agree 100% i have a parent im dealing with he has told me in pratice his kid is moving their feet in a match its not happening i told him to pull the kid in the middle of the match and gave him what to do.and until he does he will have mediocure results!!

socal 10's good job keep it up and as for fun like i tell my kid its business and disneylands down the road if he wants fun!!

Hey Brad: but your kid is just 12 years old , he has a long way to go yet.. until this past Sunday my thoughts of having my kid play pro was the thing, but seeing Nadal do it to R-Fed ,I have to say reaching that kind of tennis level for now, is not reality, for the society we have to raise our kids in... I can't see our kids competing with a bunch of well conditioned(true) athletes who has tennis in their hearts and minds and are will and able to sacrifice 100% to tennis...there are just too many distractions here in the USA in this competitive society to realistically demand our kids to excel like Nadal..
Every year, this guy gets better and better and he's only 22... my boy is 15 and with the school work and everything else he has to do,my boy has no chance to be a Nadal in 7 years....

Understood! fortunately we have the set up to have our boy competeing at that level in a few years ,wont and cant get into all his workouts but the level Nadal is at is achievable it takes a lot of sacrafice but it can happen ,and 15 is not out of the question its gonna take some re-prioritizing and sacraficing on your boys behalf but can be done!!

as for all the distractions most kids here in America run the house not so with all kids here in America!! if you want you would be welcome to join us for a workout! once again get a hold of me through my youtube email to exchange no.s

the workouts i was doing for fighting were similar to what nadals doing for tennis i really admire him ,

Unfortunately, not many (only a few) coaches know the real correct technique and strategy points of the game, and even more important, the problem is - they simply DON'T care about your kid. If you want to become someone - work yourself, make sure everything is under control yourself. We have had a lot of experiences. Try to stay away from crowdy "tennis academies".

this man speaks e truth. stay out of big academies. your kid will get lost in the larger ones and not get the attention they need to succed. if they cant get you quality time with a coach on a consistent basis then dont waste your time. many academies do 4 kids a court and just drill them with crappy practice matches in the afternoon which have no meaning so many kids dont give a solid effort.

Very true. The big tennis academies give scholarships to the few they think are going to be elite. The rest of the kids are hitting partners and their parents pay the bills for the elite kids.

An academy director once said that if you are still paying for your kid's tennis at age 12, that means they doubt he/she will be much of a player. IMG feels their scouts in these days of videos and the internet will find any player with real talent by age 12 and wrap them up.

Brad, did you notice at IMG when you visited how many 'mediocre' athletes there were? That is what surprises many when they visit. People assume it is full of world class players.

There are the elites there, but the majority are average or even below average kids whose parents are paying big bills.

almost 90% of them are below average athletes. most kids at acadamies are spoiled rich kids whose parents just dump them at tennis school and expect results. its kinda sad when u see kids getting ignored by ana acadamy that is paying 30-40k a year while a kid there for free is getting every coach jumping all over them trying to make it big. id be pretty pissed if i was paying that much money for my kid to be ignored.

suland, it is the website of the mother of a British top junior apparently.

If you read through the blogs on that website, the daughter writes a lot of it from the kid's viewpoint. She was featured as a kid tennis prodigy in some tennis publications and talks about the immense pressure that put on her. She says that the latest British tennis prodigy is a 4 year old girl who has been featured in the media there and is labeled the next great one...at 4! These 'prodigies' get younger and younger.

There is no such thing in tennis as prodigy. You never know...NEVER. A lot of things should be counted. And you will never be right. Show me one who was going to be and never became and I will show you a lot who has not been seen as a future star, but became it against all odds!

I hear that. This is the child they are referring to. 4 years old and the coach says she will be the next British champ, beating kids "twice her age", Dad former baller...all the usual hype. Once again the 'expert' says she is better than anyone else he has ever seen.

Mr Littleford said: "I have never seen anyone like Mika - she is a class above everyone else I have ever seen.

TCF, I just viewed her video on You Tube. Curious, how does your daughter stack up compared to her?

Good question, I try not to judge her abilities as I would be very biased. It is hard to see from the video how hard and deep that 4 year old is hitting.

Don't get me wrong, that little 4 year old is cute as can be and fun to watch. She hits the ball great. I have nothing but the best of wishes for her.

But why can't it just stop there? Why can't people just say, "Wow, that 4 year old really hits the ball well and looks like she is having fun"?

Why does it always have to go to the "best ever, next Grand Slam champion, never seen anything like her/him before?

That is my only problem with any of this. Just let the kids be kids who hit a tennis ball amazingly well for their ages.

Ditto. Totally agree with you. She has good hand eye, and is physically strong for a 4 yr old ( although for all we know she could be turning 5 in a month, in which case my opinion changes). But, we don't know how fast she will be, how tall she will be, or how determined. It's silly to project what kind of player she will be.

Very true, I don't know if she was 4 years and 2 days or 4 years and 11 months when the videos were taken.

She seems like a wonderful little girl who is darn good at hitting a tennis ball.

I wish the coaches and parents and tennis club owner would let her be just that, without all the grand predictions and trips to famous tennis academies. For goodness sakes she will develop just fine over the next 7-8 years just having fun hitting around her town's courts with her friends and parents. If she is still loving it at 10-11, go for it.

Current craze here is to send the kids to a training program like the Frappier acceleration program. The kids are getting tons of year round tennis instruction, the acceleration program (there are several others like it) makes them stronger and faster and promotes better foot speed.

I've seen some local juniors improve dramatically after going through the program or one like it (there are 3 competing ones locally). After going through the programs, the kids have a little more punch to their strokes and they run down lots more balls than they previously did. I think it improves their fitness and speed and also gives them some mental confidence.

It's not cheap, expect to pay from $600 - $900 for an 8 week program that includes two sessions per week, not including a pre-test and post-test session.

What kind of accelerated program is that? The only thing a Junior is going is get from two sessions per week is a good idea of how the racquet and balls look.

The Frappier program has nothing to do w/on court training per se... it's more off court training to perform better on the court...

Objectives:
Improve running biomechanics
Increase explosive power
Increase stride length/stride frequency
Increase maximum sprint speed
Increase anaerobic tolerance
Improve foot speed/agility
Improve eye-hand coordination
Enhance posture/body positioning
Improve overall strength to reduce the risk of injuries

Training:
Strength Training
Cardiovascular/Endurance Training

The Frappier program has nothing to do w/on court training per se... it's more off court training to perform better on the court...

Objectives:
Improve running biomechanics
Increase explosive power
Increase stride length/stride frequency
Increase maximum sprint speed
Increase anaerobic tolerance
Improve foot speed/agility
Improve eye-hand coordination
Enhance posture/body positioning
Improve overall strength to reduce the risk of injuries

Training:
Strength Training
Cardiovascular/Endurance Training
Plyometric Training
Flexibility
Dynamic Balance
Agility
Core Stabilization Training
