Ivanovic: Most likeable number one?

I am not a real crazy fan of Ana Ivanovic, but it is very hard to not like her. Her website is one of the better pro player ones and she really shows a lot of personality and charm. She seems like she actually WANTS to be number one unlike a lot of other top women players who say "if I win grand slams I will be number one" or "I am not concerned with being number one" etc.

What do you think?

I really like her. She seems so sweet and lovely off court and gives credit to other players. The only thing that annoys me is the constant fist pumping and squeals.

I don't know if you noticed, but some players get themselves psyched up with a fist pump or 'come-on' during important points in matches. This obnoxious player does it after every single friggen point. I find it almost or as distasteful as the Sharapova and Serena shriek. Far from the most likeable.

I hate how she fist pumps after every point, even if its an error from her opponant. Also her voice is terrible!! She is a good tennis player though, but I am not a fan at all.

Like everybody before me said, I am sometimes very annoyed by her constant fist-pumping, fist-eating, "ayah"-shouts that she does even after totally-unimportant points.

It's a different thing when you pump yourself up on important ocassions or after great shots, but she sometimes can get carried away and do it about 400 times a match.

Ditto.I used to like her, especially compared with Shriekapova but with all the fist pumping I can't help but cheering against her all the time. Now,I don't know who I can't stand more.Williams,Shriek or Ana..:-?

Amelie was a much more likeable player than Ana.

I'm netural towards Ivanovic. She's a little annoying, but she seems like a genuinely nice person and she's a good competitor. Don't really root for her, but don't really root against her. She really doesn't move me either way.

I think Guga was more likeable.

Oh, don't mention it. You remind me a painful thing. I miss Guga.
[I liked Guga - Guga is gone - Guga is happy - Guga is no more - Who's Guga?][I liked Guga - Guga is gone - Guga is happy - Guga is no more - Who's Guga?][I liked Guga - Guga is gone - Guga is happy - Guga is no more - Who's Guga?]...now I have to repeat this 2000 times again...

Ana is a sweet girl, what you see is what you get with her

On the same level of Guga, because to me when Ana speaks in her interviews, I can't help but to smile because she just seems so bubbly and joyful. Even in her defeats, she always sounds so positive. One thing about Guga is that he was always a happy character, both on and off the court.

Her three syllable "grunt" annoys me more than Sharapova's one syllable shriek, which in turn is not as offensive as Venus William's scream.

They are all nice people, though I generally root against all three (and Serana) because I feel their on-court antics set a bad example for tennis.

the fist pump is annoying.

as for the "hat distracting her' call against Dechy, she showed little class there.

After yesterday's match I am liking her less and less.

I agree. She just wanted to get bailed out, and she did. No way would she have gotten to that ball, it was a winner.

What was the hat distracting her call, I missed that?

She is ok - the fist pumping is annoying and she definitely is a game player - trying to distract/unnerve her opponent etc.

Always comes off very well in interviews though- credits her opponents etc.

I didn't see that match did she call for a replay point, or was it the umpire? Personally, I would have given the point away if the umpire called for a replay.

Ivanovic is the one who pointed out the hat as a distraction to the ump.

are you sure?? I was watching but didn't notice this, and the commentator said it was the rule.If it's true then,by no means it was preventing the game-and very poor of her to do that!

The hat was noticed by the umpire. However, Ivanovic did point it out also. I believe that in previous situations, umpires have ruled on this without the player's influence. And... Ivanovic has the cutest fist pump on tour (though she might do it a bit much). You just gotta love the simultaneous leg-kick and fist pump.

Just watched the point a couple of times again, and as soon as she couldn't reach the volley, Ivanovic pointed her racquet towards the cap incident.

Have a link to the clip?

Ana does seem like a very nice person off-court, but like everyone else said, she's a bit annoying on-court. The constant "ajde!"s and the fist pumps annoy the hell out of me, and so does the constant giggling like a drunk schoolgirl when she's doing the interviews.

Ana seems like a nice girl to me,especially when she gives interviews she alwats strikes me as nice. Her fist pumps may be a little annoying as she does it too often but she's hot so I'm willing to overlook that :).

I just watched it on ESPN360 match archives. Found an article with the info about when it happened and just fast forwarded to the point in the match.

She's a good player, but I find her really annoying with the over the top fist clenching after every point and the longing looks to her yes men for emotional support. I also heard Sam Smith say she has a bit of a temper off court. I find something very self-indulgent about her personality. Much prefer Jankovic or Kuznetsova when it comes to personality, more down to earth and unassuming. Ivanovic is more, "look at me, look at me".

I agree with all this.

The more I watch her the less I like her. Between the first pumps and the movement she does when returning its just a bit too much.

Yeah, I am trying to like her, but all of the things listed make her difficult to root for. The whole time I was reading this thread I was nodding in response. I dislike the incessant fist pumping after every point no matter how trivial. The three syllable a-hey-ja. The giggly, innocent girl persona, and she did point out the hat incident to the chair. I tried, just not feeling her!

I like her, personally. She does overdo it on the fist pumping, but a lot of women make to big a deal out of routine points like that. I've seen Serena fist pump on mis-hit returns before.

She needs to learn how to make a proper fist though, it's not exactly the most intimidating.

Dechy came in on a short ball and volleyed away a clear winner. As soon as she saw that there was no way she could get to Dechy's winner she said she was distracted because the wind blew off Dechy's hat. The most messed up thing about it was that Dechy's hat fell off after the winner was passed Anna, so to claim it was a distraction was weak.

here are the highlights not sure if the point is in there

Graf was likeable as well. She also smiled a lot, but in more of a shy sort of way. And she may have been the greatest female player of all time, unlike Ivanovic, playing a more entertaining game based more on athleticism in a more impressive field.

Ivanovic is really a rare breed among women these days. I like her personality.

Ana didn't complain. Umpire ruled point replay himself. Go and read post match interviews from both players. Also the hat fell off before Dechy hit the ball, but it is a moot point anyway.
