Um...ping pong is an Olympic sport?

What the ****????

These guys are so into it, that it just seems pathetic to me. IMO, ping pong is for wanna-be tennis players who aren't fit enough to actually play. I can respect ping pong as a recreational game, but to put it as an Olympic sport is rediculous.

Why doesn't it qualify? It's more grueling than a sport like baseball and takes incredible reaction and anticipation.

seems like a sport to me...

do you think badminton doesn't qualify either?

if you haven't play ping pong don't talk. it requires a lot of skills. it took me longer to learn ping pong than tennis to be consistent. just because YOU like tennis doesn't mean anything tennis alike is a wanna be. hell some ping pong people might even think vise versa. it's a sport. pro ping pong is much much more exciting to watch than pro tennis.

Ping pong does require incredibly fast reflexes, but its not as physically demanding as any other sport. You don't need to run miles or lift weights to succeed in ping pong. Have a fast mind and you'll win.

Damn right I don't like it, thats why I had "IMO" (in my opinion) in the very first post. Don't pee your pants.

I don't think it's that simple. Things you're saying about PP is the sort of thing football player would say about tennis.

Poker will be in the Olympics within 8 years.
Ballroom dancing was once in the Olympics.

The Olympics are becoming more and more commercialized - and so it only stands to reason that it will reach the insane point where poker - one of the most commercial activities currently - will be included relatively soon.

Ping Pong - otherwise known as table tennis - does legitimately belong.

I'd agree. If we have the 10m air pistol shoot, why not ping pong?

I don't know about that but from my experience, ping pong is a very physical and demanding sport which requires extreme physical and mental conditioning. If I had to compare Tennis and Ping Pong in terms of physical fitness, I would rank Ping Pong as much more strenuous.

So Ping Pong is definitely a sport and certainly one of the more physically demanding events in the Olympic games.

I can tell you obviously haven't played table tennis. Please keep opinions to yourself until you actually have a good enough knowledge on the topic...

table tennis is even more demanding than tennis. infact, table tennis players spend the same amount of time, if not more, practicing for the olympics. have you seen the amasing control and quick reflexes required to play this sport? In america, it isnt as valued, but the same could be said about tennis from a football player's perspective.

China takes ping pong seriously. I was watching doubles the other day and they said if the chinese did not do good than they would be punished by being publicly or privately humiliated. They did not go into details about what the meaning of that was.

Actually as far as Caloric burn Table tennis is not far behind actual tennis. I would remove gynmastics and diving before I even got close to TT

Remove beach volleyball before all of those. The olympics really lost a lot of credibility when they made beach v'ball an olympic sport.

OP has no idea how physically demanding, mentally challenging, and how technically sound one has to be to be a competitive table tennis player. Professional players train from very early age and in china they basically start training when they are a sperm.

Did you know that table tennis is the most popular world wide sport besides soccer. Much more popular than tennis!! Seriously, look it up.

I dated a vietnamese girl who played on the vietnamese national team at one point. She did much of her training in china and she basically described it as a boot camp. Our college held a tournament once and she blew the doors off everyone who stepped up. God, I miss that girl *sigh*

You know a lot of "real" jocks (and people in general) don't consider tennis a "real" sport (as horrible as that may seem to us tennis players), so be a little bit sympathetic.

Table Tennis (not "ping pong") looks a little stupid on TV, but there is a lot of skill involved. If equestrian "dressage" can be in the Olympics, why not table tennis?

Also, there are very few "wanna-be" tennis players.

I would complain about something like power walking (or I guess they call it "race" walking) before complaining about something like table tennis.

Also, just have to say really funny comment earlier about the manboobs (moobs). Made me laugh real hard. But if you think about it, one of the sports that probably has the most players with moobs is baseball (especially the MLB).

I question whether or not you are completely full of it.

Actually...playing table tennis at decent level requires GOOD cardio...IMO. Pretty tough. Tennis requires much more athleticism....two different sports, but both difficult to master. Since Jyuudou which is our National sport (in Japan) is an Olympic sport, anything can be as long as they get the votes. That's how they decide what's gonna be in it and not.

Believe it or but Sweden has at one time or another been world champions and gold medalists in table tennis. google Jan Ove Waldner, he was at his peak the best TT player in the world.

I must be extremely fit then or have perfectly efficient technique or something because I've played a lot of table tennis and never find my self trying to catch my breath regardless of who I play against ,whether they're advanced players or whatever. Also I saw a few old fat guys in table tennis at the Olympics and they didnt seem to get too tired. It tests a lot of skill reflexes, and concentration but not much fitness.

I think table tennis is a good olympic sport, but its one of the most boring spectator sports I've seen. Its much more enjoyable to play.

I found it a bit funny when I heard BMX riding was going to be on the Olympics, but it was good to watch and very skillful and demanding.

If Synchronised swimming is a sport, then I guess anything can be called a sport.

Trampoline jumping was amusing. I only saw 1 routine, and the all the guy did was jump up and down on the trampoline higher and higher with each jump, and that was it. I was waiting for him to do a spin or something impressive. Since I didnt see more routines I don't know if they just jump up and down all of the time or what. I assume they also do all sorts of moves liek in the gymnastics.

You just hav to be better than millions of chinese to succeed in Table tennis. I find it interesting to see how the top few distinguish themselves from the rest.

I do not know what you consider advanced and im not sure what your skill level is, but to say that table tennis is not much fitness is just as laughable to me as saying that it is a lot fitness to others. If balls are flying at you 60-100mph and you have to anticipate where the ball is going to be and move there by the time it gets there to be ready to hit that shot and then repeat that process while having a sound technique to be able to execute properly....then yes...I would consider it fitness. In fact, its much much more technical and a harder game than tennis and yes, the work out is up there for me, not as high as tennis but damn near close (depending on who im playing and what im doing)...If you dont get much fitness out of it than either you are superhuman or you and/or your partner are not playing at a level that requires much skill, effort and technique...

Just saying....

Many western countries try to break into Ping Pong, but it's almost impossible to break through the chinese dominance.

I can play at a high level agaisnt guys that play at the highest level local competition all year long, though I just play casually. But its just not a very physical game. The most exercise you get in table tennis is when you have to walk to fetch the ball after someone hits a winner or hits it out, and bending over to pick up the ball all of the time. Ussually my opponent gets a lot of exercise from fetching all of my winners. :)

Mabe Im just much much fitter than you, so table tennis seems relatively much more strenuous for you? Dunno, but it's not a very physical game for me compared to many other sports. You should try to play advanced level touch football, or ultimate frisbee or something, you would probably have a heart attack if you think Ping pong is strenuous. lol.

Now im watching the chinese womens world champ Zhang play against a japanese women. None of them are breathing very much at all to take in oxygen. Most of the points are 5 or 6 shots long, and they take about 10 seconds to serve after each point. Thats just not very strenuous to me.

Whether it should be in the olympics is your opinion. But it takes a lot of anticipation, and in it has its own physicality, thats a fact.

Player do train really hard. Fitness at the highest level is a priority. Being explosive is required too. You need to be way quicker than in Tennis.

I wouldn't laugh if I was the OP. Bjorn Borg got his first racquet after his dad won a table tennis tourny, and his topspin forehand technique is based off of the table tennis stroke. So you could say that the modern topspin game is based off of ping pong.

PS: As a child Federer was scouted for tennis when people saw his crazy ping pong skills.

Hell - maybe poker will be there in 4 years.

If BMX biking can be in this year, the floodgates to ridiculessness are apparently wide open.
