Why Tennis is the Best Sport

Here are reasons why I believe tennis is the most difficult and best sport:

1. You depend on yourself. If you put forth more work, your results will improve.
2. It blends power, precision, timing, accuracy, and touch.
3. Conditions can be brutal, especially playing in the heat for hours.
4. Sprinting, starting and stopping all on concrete is tough on your feet.
5. You can take your frustration out on the ball without harming another human being.
6. Players shake hands after a match.
7. It is a life-long sport. Suitable for all ages and genders.
8. There are different levels of players.
9. Must maintain focus, slack and you will struggle. No teammates to support you.
10. Repetition of tennis is similar to meditation, especially rallying.
11. Requires quick thinking and decision making.
12. Teaches you math.
13. You have to manipulate a racquet.
14. Its like gigantic ping-pong, twice as fun, twice as hard, and twice length in shorts.
15. You only get 3 balls per can for almost 2 dollars
16. You build good looking muscles that are always exposed -- calves and forearms.
17. Can be played indoors and outdoors
18. Tennis tests your commitment, requires years of training.
19. Its a polite sport
20. Even old people can beat you
21. Teaches you to not dwell on the past.

Please add to this list and maybe share some disadvantages of the sport.

This is good stuff.
22. There are usually attractive women playing in short skirts at the club.

The greatest team sport is football. Hands down.

The greatest individual sport is boxing. Not kickboxing, thai boxing, mma etc. Boxing. The fine art.

After boxing, the greatest individual sport is tennis. The similarities between the sport are great, especially on the mental side of things. Jimmy Connors was right when he said that tennis is boxing at 40 feet.

Never heard that quote before but I have always thought of Tennis as being very similar to boxing. I like the fact that in tennis you don't physically hurt another person.

5. You can take your frustration out on the ball without harming another human being."

Some would say this is not very popular in tennis, especially if No.1 does it - it's big no no.

"14. Its like gigantic ping-pong, twice as fun, twice as hard, and twice length in shorts."
Ping pong is actually a bit more creative because you don't have to run so much and you have much more varieties in hitting the ball.

"15. You only get 3 balls per can for almost 2 dollars"
Tennis is one of most expensive sports.

"16. You build good looking muscles that are always exposed -- calves and forearms."
Best tennis players are actually very lean. Djokovic and Federer for an example.

"19. Its a polite sport"
Wonder what Murray can say about this.
Fanbases of top players are usually very egocentric and vile.

Best sports for human body are certainly swimming and volleyball. Can't say they are as attractive as tennis.

lol Boxing. Boxing has been dead for a long time. Either way it is not fun to watch and is primitive.

My favorite sport will always be football (otherwise known as soccer to certain groups..)

I love tennis but some disadvantages are not only that it's an individual sport, which makes it less popular for kids.

But it's also expensive to get into and also considered elitist to some, both in terms of those who play and watch.

Difficult sport - Agree.

Best sport - debatable. I think sport should not be for elite with high entry barrier which is the case in tennis today. The sport may be missing out on some real talent.

Why tennis isn't the best sport

- Doesn't require the fitness of boxers/basketball players or UFC fighters
- No money = no tennis career.Should sport really be this snobby???
- Lack of zero to hero; Literally every tennis player has came from wealthy backgrounds. When was the last time you heard of a successful tennis player who achieved the #1 ranking ten years after playing tennis with a stone and a plank of wood??? Messi, Pac-man, money, all these guys became top tier athletes with poor upbringings.
- Lack of personalities; And when he get a rare personality e.g Kyrgios, we tend to moan (although I like Nick)
- Fans of tennis are usually pompous, and have never really played the sport past a 3.5 level.
- Not an equal opportunity sport; How many guys under 5"11 have won a major? Not only is tennis a moneyed sport, but it also doesn't help if you are small.
- ATP clearly doesn't care about the players. Who the hell wants to play in the rain? Lol.
- ATP clearly doesn't care for different game styles; Most courts play exactly the same. it's like a game where you reload the same stage every time.

I could go on, but there are soooo sooooo soooo many reasons why tennis isn't even close to the best sport.

I think it is high time the sport changes to BO3 up until R3 or R4 .

The homogeneous surfaces, 32 seed system are making a mockery of week 1 of majors. It is really really boring for the casual tennis fan.

Out of 8 top seeds, 2 may get busted and that is precisely what will make it interesting. It is not that you will end up with Ilhan vs Stakhovsky in the finals.

Amongst individual sports, tennis has few peers. A couple of benefits not yet mentioned:
  • Taoist principles rewarded.
  • Quality of play and mental strength enhanced by reading about the game.

There is no full-time whistle - you must have the mental strength to close the game out. This makes upsets all the more impressive in tennis than they are in sports that have a time-limit.

Here's a big one. Huge plus:

Scoring.

Tennis' scoring system is genius. Even little points count because every game counts because every set counts because every match counts.

So there is a reason to be hyped about every hit. Every point. Which means every moment is important.

Basketball - back and forth towards a huge number total - early points seem meaningless.
Football - you wait for hours for a score.
Tennis scoring is perfect.

I think it is particularly well suited to personal rivalries. It has all the inherent advantages of all individual sports ( as opposed to team sports), no mid match coaching or other teammates, to complicate credit, and lots of occasions for development of a rivalry with potential for multiple meetings and enough variables like surface and weather to keep the rivalry fresh. Geeks have tons of stats to analyze and re-analyze ad nauseum. Heck you can sometimes even compare team aspects if both rivals play doubles or mixed.

You can only rely on yourself. Your performance out there individually will dictate whether you win or lose the match. Unlike other sports, you can't call timeouts and continue to talk stuff over with the coach. Also, it's not over till it's over. In tennis, there's no time limit so you can't just run out the shot clock and get the W, and until you win 2 sets in a best of 3 or 3 sets in a best of 5 before your opponent does, the match is still up for grabs. Finally, there's no teammates. When the going gets tough you yourself have to get tougher. There's no subbing off and most of all, you can't just give the ball to your teammates and have them bail you out in certain situations. Instead, you must find ways to clutch up in the big moments all by yourself to bring home the Vic
